xxxDark, it was always dark in the holding rooms. Light wasnt needed though, not for Zaq or the others in this part of the facility. The darkness was nothing though, nothing to fear from the dark, nothing bad about it. What bothered Zaq the most had to have been the noise. The noise did not resonate through his ears, but rather through his mind. Something that made him both powerful and weak at the same time. He could feel the pain of his comrades just as much as their strength

xxxOutside of the study rooms, Zaq would do his best to keep his mind calm and if anything, happy. But that changed to pain and fear within the rooms, as the strenuous tests and observations were made by the scientists. Unspeakable things happened in those rooms, but it was for the good of man they were told.

xxxZaq wasn't alone though, not in the sense of the hivemind, but in a more personal way as well. Faerai was her name, for as long as he had known her, she had perked his interest. She was heavily tested on, like him, but hers had changed her outwardly appearance just as much as her inward changes. Her ears were more animal like, and her tatoos were alive, responding to her emotions. Also like him, she was one of the first, though he was more lucky when it came to appearances, while Faerai would be considered and ugly mutation to most. He loved her though, and soon began to realize that it was a shared love between them.

xxxSince then, Zaq was rarely studied on anymore, at first because Faerai made them regret the decision, later due to the new experiments. As per usual, the older experiments would be tossed aside, sent to individual cells where they would stay until schedualed their physical activity. Through the noise, Zaq tried to sense her, hoping to to know she was safe and in little pain.

There is only one thing I fear... The silence that comes before disaster, the calm before the storm.

Faerai Daegen
Hivemind

XXX Time was impossible to track in the dark like this. Nothing seemed to matter. Your presence, was insignificant. No air moved in the small room, igniting a fire would only heat up the enclosed area further; as she had learned early on. So she remained crouched in the darkness, her mind blank as she often kept it. Though that was hard to do when there were so many others heard in your head as well. Granted, there weren't really all that many, but there were enough to drive Faerai insane. So many judging eyes, pitying thoughts... enough to make her sick. So many looks of revulsion, so many false friends. She closed her eyes to the thoughts that flowed within her mind, though that did nothing to block them out. They were as impossible to get rid of as the thoughts of others.

XXX'Why were we given this ability?' She cried out in her mind. 'Why is it that they deigned it right for me to hear the sorrowful, pitiful, selfish thoughts of others?' She sighed, she was aware Zaq would not like hearing these questions, knew that he would not like being separated, unable to comfort her. But at this point, that knowledge was buried deep, certainly not forefront in her mind. 'Why must I be different? Why couldn't I have remained unchanged? Why couldn't I be normal? Why was I chosen for this anyway?' A sob escaped her lips as she curled into a ball on the floor of the holding room.

XXXOutside of the hated holding rooms, Faerai was quiet, always burning with a hate. Hatred for the scientists and their needles. Hatred for the others in the Hivemind that looked on her with pity, while walking around unscathed by the scientists destroying touch. And even... hatred for Zaq, occasionally, that he love her deformities. At the times when she was outside the holding room, which seemed to happen less and less frequently as the newer experiments were brought in. This thought too, brought more tears forth. What would happen when they had so many newer experiments that she could no longer discern her own thoughts from theirs? Was that what the scientists aimed for? A completely unified group?

xxxAs if it were coincedence, Zaq finally heard Faerai's cry. He felt the frustration and hated, mostly though, he felt the sadness. There was little he could do, yet someone with his particular way of thinking was able to come up with something that would be a temporary solution. Now, he focused, focused on his abilities, focused on his calm. The noises were almost silent now as he did so.

xxxThe air swirled about him, testing its feel, its chill, and its shape. He calculated, bringing back memories of the designs, the designs and layouts of the facility. The wind died down within his own cell, but was well and alive outside, flowing through the halls, sweeping past other doors. If he remembered correctly, she would be the next one, the cell right off to the left. He felt the air, as if it were still there, and had it move and swirl around Faerai. Once Zaq was sure he had found the right cell, he had the wind slow, yet cling. It grasped at Faerai's small and fragile form, Zaq hoping she would feel his presence, praying she would feel the comfort of it.

xxxMeanwhile, Zaq himself felt her, through the wind, through the air. It pleased him, he could even feel the warmth. A smile appeared on his face, one that he had needed for sometime. He only could whisper such a thought, it was practically silent, but a response was the only thing that went through his head. 'It will be alright, one day we will be free, and none of this will matter.' He closed his eyes, enjoying the presence he had of her.

There is only one thing I fear... The silence that comes before disaster, the calm before the storm.

Hivemind

XXX She stilled as she felt the air in the room move, curving around her. Her tears dried and stopped swiftly as the realization hit her... Zaq. A single tear made it's way down her cheek. He cared. She wasn't completely alone. That knowledge made it almost possible to ignore the feelings of pity that resonated within her mind from the others in the hive. She could not smile, though. No, not in this dark place, not without any chance of escape to be seen. But, she could be almost happy; remembering those few, short, chance meetings between the two of them. In the facility, there was no time to become attached to anyone really. Most of what allowed them their closeness was the mental link between them, and the rest of the 'mind.

XXX'It will be alright, one day we will be free, and none of this will matter.' Faerai heard his words, and the sincerity behind them. Yet she could not believe them. She had been down here, underground, for so long that she had forgotten what the sun felt like, what rain smelled like, what real companionship was. She could not believe that they would escape this prison. Faerai was a realist, and all five senses told her that escape was not possible. The feel of the stone walls surrounding them, the smell of fear, and the stale stink of underground air. The taste of what meager portions that served as meals. The darkness, that yielded not to her penetrating eyes, and most of all, the silence. All lead her to believe that there was no way to escape. What was there that disproved that?

XXXShe wanted to tell him all of this, but did not want to bring his spirits down any. Faerai was selfish, and used his happiness to keep her from drowning in despair, or worse, killing herself. The scientists knew not that she thought of such things, and she did well to keep it from the others in the Hivemind as well, though that was a bit trickier.

xxxHe wondered, about his promise to her. Zaq considered the idea of escape, and it was unlikely. Unlikely if he were to do it alone, but what if he were to try with Faerai? It was something that he shouldn't think about, as it put Faerai in danger. So he forced the thought away, and kept the air flowing.

xxxIf he lost concentration, he would lose his connection, and right now he wanted to keep her as close as he could. At the same time, he wondered what would happen if any of the facility employees noticed the air stream and interrupted it. Then a worse thought came to mind, what if they found either him or Faerai and decided to execute punishment. At that moment, he decided he was going to have to let her go temporarily. With a last expression of love, the air swirled across her cheek before it ended entirely.

xxxThrough the loudness of everyones thoughts, he spoke to her once more. 'That's all I can afford to do for now, I'm sorry that I cannot please you more.' At the moment, he didn't care for all of the others within the hive.

There is only one thing I fear... The silence that comes before disaster, the calm before the storm.

XXX She sighed sadly as the current of air slowed and finally stopped, her hand reaching after it, as if trying to capture it and keep it with her. The tears started once again as the stillness of the room crept into her once again. She didn't like being this sad, for Zaq's sake, not her own. If she could, Faerai would be happy all the time, if only to be able to keep Zaq that way. She slowly picked herself off the floor, leaning on the wall behind her. She remained hunched, her eyes becoming more swollen the longer she cried.

XXX'That's all I can afford to do for now, I'm sorry that I cannot please you more.' She sat up as she heard his words, over the tumult of other thoughts and feelings. Her tears remained fresh on her face, though, as she replied quietly, hoping to whatever God there was that he would hear her. 'I am the one that is sorry. Sorry that I am... the way I am.' She fingered the tips of her ears, the hardened, elongated, scar tissue with a sigh.

xxxThat's when he began to feel the sadness from his love again. It was something that made him want to falter, make him break, yet he could not. He had to stay strong for her, for everybody. It was his unique trait in comparison to the years he had been there. Most would be in Faerai's state, wondering why, destroyed by the unbearable tests.

xxxThen Faerai said something that took all of Zaq's self control away. 'Sorry that I am... the way I am.' At that moment, he instantly made all of the other hive go silent with his protest. It was commanding, something unlike him, but he could no longer help himself. 'Sorry for being everything I've ever wanted! Are you that blind that you cannot see that I have loved you for the way you are!' It was a rare fury, but he had not seen her for so long, it had become unbareable to hear such words.

xxxThe voices then started again, now more judgemental of both him and Faerai. Zaq calmed himself once more, before speaking again. 'Sorry... I just can't stand this place anymore.' He shook momentarily as he replayed himself yelling at her. He had never done that, and it wasn't right.

XXX Faerai froze as Zaq exploded at her. As long as she'd known him, never once had he yelled, or lost his patience. He'd always been happy and under control. Now she shook as she knelt on the floor, her hands fisted on the ground, her knuckles feeling keenly the roughness of the concrete floor. Her head was nearly on the floor as her tears flowed freely yet again. She could not reply, she had nothing to say. She let the disapproving, judging thoughts wash over her and consume her own, faraway thoughts.

XXXShe sobbed silently. Why hadn't she known? He was just as fed up with this place as she was. There was no doubt that she was closest to him, and yet she hadn't had a single clue. Why? Why hadn't she known? She blamed herself for his sorrow, for her sadness and depression is what brought this on.

xxxHe could feel her sorrow now, Zaq had made it worse. He knew he was no good at making her feel better, but today, he was going to change that. The thought he pushed away earlier came up again. What better way to make Faerai happy than to give her the freedom she deserved. Yet, he made a few modifications to the plan.

xxx'Faerai, I'm going to get you out of here... I'm going to bash down our doors and then give the facility something to worry about.' Zaq sighed, he already knew the next part he was going to say was going to be something she would not agree with. 'Meanwhile, you get away...' At first, he was going to add more, but he figured that he could always do that when she decides to refuse.

xxxHe breathed in deeply before he focused on the air around him again. The cell he was in was designed to be unbreakable, created with numerous materials and compounds, yet at the same time, the scientists were never as creative as Zaq was. He pressed his hand against the door, forcing the air to flow through it rapidly. He can already hear the guards shout as they felt the air pressure, the door itself though, was beginning to rust. As long as metal would exist within the door, he could oxidize it with a constant barrage of oxygen.

xxxThe door finally began to crumble, the noise both from the outside and within his mind grew. Outside was panic, inside was pleas of help. He on the otherhand, forced himself to stay calm. As he stepped out of his cell, he heard a gaurd call out at him. "Freeze!" Looking over, Zaq noticed the guard aiming a gun at him. The air swirled around him as he approached the guard, as the guard was in his way of Faerai. The guard then began to shoot, but the bullets swerved around him. It wouldn't be until they gathered the other weapondry before they could stop him.

There is only one thing I fear... The silence that comes before disaster, the calm before the storm.

XXX 'Get... out of here?' Her thoughts were muddled in confusion, and almost lost in the tumult of shouts in the 'mind. '... get away? Do you really think I would leave you here to fight this on your own?' She did not expect any answer to this. Her tears stopped as she leaned back, sitting in her knees, laying her head against the wall. How was escape possible? Could he really get them out of there?

XXXShe stood on unsteady legs, pacing silently in the small, dark room. Her knees threatened to buckle under her as despairing thoughts swirled about her head. What would happen if he were caught? She'd never be able to forgive herself, for it was her sorrow, her sadness that caused him to come up with this idea.

xxxZaq was unsure how to answer, unwilling to make a promise he wasn't sure he could keep. At the same time though, he needed her to leave, she had to escape. After what seemed like a lifetime, he finally replied. 'I'll meet you topside, I promise.' It was a promise not only to her, but to himself. Now, he could no longer allow himself to die. His face became more serious as the guard contiuned to fire at him.

xxxIt was an easy task dealing with the first few guards that he had encountered, Zaq often flinging them against walls or upon one anothers. The pleas within his mind, others begging for help that he will not supply, began to cloud his thinking a bit. At first, he thought about helping them, but them remembered the remarks, the cruel teasing that was made towards Faerai. They did not deserve freedom if they would ridicule their peers, let alone, his love. He had finally came to the cell that held Faerai though, so he was finally able to stop thinking of the others.

xxxLooking inside the temper-proof plastic like glass that would give guards the ability to watch the experiments, Zaq gazed upon her and smiled. Once again, he began to oxydize the metals within the door, rusting them and making them crumble. The guards had ceased coming, meaning they were being equipped with more dangerous weapondry, weapons that cannot be so easily stopped.

xxxHe swallowed hard as he embraced her, yet it was a short embrace, as he still had to make sure she can leave safely. Pulling her away for a bit, hands on her shoulders, he looked into Faerai's eyes, using his thumbs to remove any hair that interfered. At this range, the hivemind was strong, a whisper within would resonate with intensity and make it sound as if it were normal tones. 'They will be coming, and they will be well armed. I need you to run, find an exit. Anybody that gets in your way, anybody, you must not hesitate to disarm them.' He knew that this would be little problem to her, but if they get caught, the scientist would surely correct the cell holdings to be near impossible to rust, and that's assuming they let either him or Faerai live.

xxxZaq then softly pressed his lips against Faerai's, 'Please, you have to escape... You have to for me. I cannot guarantee my own safety until yours is.' He embraced her once more, kissing her cheek, and then left the cell. The air swirled, twisted, turned, shaped, it was magnificent control over something that most would have problems doing with the greatest technology. He went to head to the study rooms, hoping to kill two birds with one stone. Zaq will not only bring distraction through destruction, but he would also slow further experiments by destroying their controlled enviroments.

There is only one thing I fear... The silence that comes before disaster, the calm before the storm.

XXXShe wanted to argue, wanted to tell him she wouldn't leave him; that she couldn't leave him. But no words came. She leaned against the far wall, closing her eyes against the headache she could feel pounding deep in the back of her head. She could feel him moving closer through the pounding in the forefront of her head. It felt as if someone was trying to claw their way out through her forehead.

XXXAs Zaq left, she wanted to argue, wanted to tell him she wouldn't leave his side. But he left no room for argument, leaving her on her own. She reached after him, but said nothing, knowing that he would be stuck on this path no matter what she said. Her headache gained intensity as the calls for help from the other hivemind's reverberated back and forth, bouncing off her skull. She remained in her room for a moment, leaning against the wall, falling to a crouch, her hands on her head.

xxxHalfway to the study rooms, a sqaud of well equipped guards giving chase, Zaq checked on Faerai's progress. To his dismay and worry, she was still there, in the very cell he left her. A muddle of emotions began to fill him, worry, fear, concern, all took over. What if she was hurt? Maybe she was caught, he could not tell. The other hive members caused too much interference for him to tell. Worse, to go back would mean he would have to face his pursuers.

xxxThe guards were carrying guns that could literally fire lightning, something that Zaq was unable to push aside, and impossible to dodge intentionally. He had hoped to run through with a mass of swirling wind and destroy all in his path, never having to face them directly, but it was impossible now. His promise to Faerai played through his head again, and now he was unsure whether he could keep it. Going back would almost guarantee certain death or capture, the first more likely than the last. Nonetheless, he knew what he was going to do, Zaq had no doubt in his mind that he was going back for her. All of this would be pointless if he did not.

xxxRounding a corner to bring himself out of sight of the guards, he drew his swirling energy about him and threw it down the hall. He heard the guards topple and crash amongst each other. Zaq the ran back, the guards already regaining posture, one even aiming his gun. A burst of air flowed and pushed, knocking back the solider, the high energy gun firing into the wall, punching a hole through it. It was a thought he did not wish to think, yet it came to his mind, the idea of himself being that wall. The pain, if any at all, would have been unbearable, yet nothing compared to the pain he would feel if the same happened to Faerai.

xxxThe thought pushed Zaq harder, imagining a large drill to shape his air, it swirled to a point, one gaurd having the painful experience to get in his way to try and stop him. The blood had pretty much painted the walls. It hurt Zaq to kill someone who may have had a family, but he could not allow Faerai to be in any danger, not after the pressure he had placed on her.

xxxHe had finally reached the cell, hearing guards marching from every direction he could imagine. The noise was loud again, as he was near all of the others. Faerai was breaking down a wall within the room. Her hands failing to supress the pain resonating within her head. At first, he began to go towards her, but coreected himself when he heard the footsteps once more. It would be easier to defend her from his current position than it would be within the room. Any chance of escape he had given her was gone, now all he could do was keep her alive for as long as possible.

xxxZaq's throat was raspy, almost never in use, "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I cannot keep my promise anymore." Though calm, he could feel the wetness building behind his eyelids. His voice could have been falter due to the thought of losing her was present as well, he did shake the thought however as he saw a guard turn the corner to aim. It was a mistake to take so much time as to aim against Zaq at the moment, as tearing winds shook the very walls of the hall as it ripped the guard apart.

xxxEventually, the guards would learn. Eventually, the guards will win. They had numbers and technology to counter him and anyone else in this facility. Not only that, but their pain was individual, his was shared. All it would take is one shooting another prisoner in the leg, anywhere non-lethal, and Zaq would falter. He knew this, and knew that the facility would also come up with the same conclusion. Another guard rounded, attempted to get a shot off and go back to cover, he was lucky enought to only lose an arm. Even though Zaq could not keep this up forever, he knew he could hold them for at least five minutes.

There is only one thing I fear... The silence that comes before disaster, the calm before the storm.

XXXShe felt him turn back, coming closer again. His thoughts were bent on her, but, she wanted to tell him not to turn back. To go through with his plan, to get out of here. But she couldn't say anything, the words would not form. She remained in the corner as she felt him stand in the doorway. She heard him take down the guards, but did not look up until he spoke, his quiet voice sounding loud after the physical silence. Her tears fell freely as he apologized. But it wasn't right, was it? It wasn't his fault. It was hers. Her sadness, her depression, it was what caused all this.

XXXShe stood on wobbly legs, her tears still silently falling down her cheeks. She walked forward slowly, but before she could reach Zaq, the sounds in her head reached an unimaginable height. She stopped in the middle of the room, holding her head in her hands and yelled against them. 'Shut UP!'The sound actually faded for a moment, the feeling of shock reverberating in her mind. She sighed and moved to Zaq, wrapping her arms around his waist, whispering, "Do... Do not apologize to me." Her frame was wracked with silent sobs as she buried her head in his back.

XXXBefore she could say anything else, the sound of footsteps echoed from down the hall. Faerai stepped around Zaq, standing in front of him, her hands aflame. She didn't know if the guards wore any fireproof clothes, but the blast of fire she shot at him was much hotter then your regular camp fire. Whether he wore anything fireproof or not, it was not a pleasant way to die. As the last lick of fire diappeared, she sank to her knees, looking at her hands. She'd just taken a life... And, and she didn't feel anything. What would he think? What would Zaq think of her now? She buried her head back in her hands, unable to face him.
