Yes.
The only distinction between them is that lyrics are put to music.

Stelle Cadenti Yes. The only distinction between them is that lyrics are put to music. yeah. I agree... so why then do we have a lyrics subforum and a poems subforum, when we can't hear the music to the lyrics?!?!

Well, lyrics are less philosophical, it's more about rhyming and choruses than a poem is. I guess. Of course I've never written a lyric or a poem in my life so what do I know?

I've always thought that poems can be lyrics. And there was a time when poems were actually sung rather then spoken (You know, minstrels and bards and whatnot?). I guess there really isn't much of a difference between the two. Then again, lyrics most often have a hook, whereas poems usually don't. Oh, whatever, I just focus on writing and enjoying both. sweatdrop

I believe that lyrics can most definitely be poems and vice versa. There are subtle differences between the two (like lyrics being put to music as Stelle pointed out) but, either one can be changed to be the other. Either way, I love to write both because they can be interchangeable.
