Hrrm..I hope you see this, Little Pea xD
I have a question on connecting letters in Arabic.
I understand each letter has 4 forms: final, medial, initial, isolated.
But do the forms stay constant? or do they change depending on the next written letter?
For example, if you connect ya (inital form) and ta (medial form), will the ya (inital form) connect the same as with ta (medial form)?
BAH, I hope you understand what I am saying :/
It's a good question. All letters will connect to the next letter as they are supposed to be connected (some have a single form and don't connect to the next letter, as د و أ ز ر. Other letter do connect to them if they precede them though). Ya connects the same way to all other letters. (:
The only things I can think of: The ح group. Because of their medial form (it doesn't begin all the way down, but kind of in the middle), usually in handwriting there's a subtle difference. Instead of writing, for example, لح, usually people won't go all the way down to go back up, and just connect them both in a slightly higher point. But that's subtle and in print it doesn't always look like this.
Also ل connects differently to ا, and it looks like this: لا.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know...
I see Wright's Arabic Grammar has pretty good information regarding the alphabet, although as it always is in this book it's pretty crammed and it isn't the best source if you're studying this for the first time, but it has some good insights. Maybe I could find a way to scan it.
Yay, it's on
the internet! The very first part has many explanations regarding many issues, some you would be interested in, some I'm sure you won't. (:
