Story
Shurei Kou, destitute but of noble birth, has always dreamed of working as a government offical in the imperial court, but women are barred from holding such offices. Shurei becomes a consort to the emperor Ryuki in an attempt to persuade the ne'er-do-well ruler to govern.

Kairi Yura was born on January 16. She is the illustrator of both the manga and the YA novels for The Story of Saiunkoku. She is also the creator of the Angelique series.

Volume 1
Shurei enters the palace as Ryuki’s consort, but he has yet to seek her out. It is rumored that men, not women, share the emperor’s bedchamber. Shurei must think of a way to stop the emperor from shirking his responsibilities, but she has to find him first!
Volume 2
After realizing Ryuki has been faking his ignorance, an enraged Shurei demands to be sent home immediately. Ryuki then locks Shurei in her room, unaware he has now put his consort in great danger...
Volume 3
Shurei has returned to her normal life at home, but once more the palace finds itself in need. She is asked to work as an assistant in the Ministry of the Treasury, but as women aren't allowed in, Shurei must pretend to be a boy!
Volume 4
Shurei has been disguising herself as a boy to assist Kijin Ko, the esteemed Minister of the Treasury. Despite Ryuki’s plan to allow females to take the civil service exam, many remain opposed to the idea, including Kijin. Will Shurei be able to convince the discerning minister to change his mind?
Volume 5
Shurei falls ill and a group of indulgent yet inept men try to tend her. But while her family and the ministers from the court debate how to nurse her back to health, the emperor seizes the chance to sneak into her bedchamber for a visit.
Volume 6
The Blue Scarf Gang continues its attack on Kogaro. Yogetsu’s strength during the battle gets the notice of the underworld bosses who want to recruit him, but Ryuki says the boy is already promised to him...?!
Volume 7
Though Shurei and Eigetsu passed the Imperial Exam with high marks, they are being bullied as they go about their duties as new civil servants in the palace. But it seems the pair may have found an unlikely ally...
Volume 8
Shurei has been falsely accused of cheating on the Imperial Exam by those who don’t want women working as civil servants. Shurei must attend an inquiry to prove her innocence, but her opponents are plotting to make sure she never arrives at the palace.
