while watching avatar I couldn't help but ask myself how would it be possible?
PostPosted: Tue Feb 16, 2010 5:18 pm

Well, I could see It work with cryogenics and a sunsail... And the resources to get us to the sunsail and to keep us alive. It would take a couple thousand years, then there is the time the sunsail doesn't work and engines are needed... It would work... but it would take thousands-millions of years for one trip. And the resources needed are huge.

yeah thats true but if scientists discovered how to recycle food into well food and if they made engines that could break the speed of light then i think it might be possible to a degree, or if they made articficial intelligence to guide the ship while everyone was in cryo?

if they made engines that could break the speed of light

That is physically impossible right now.
Wikipedia

The speed at which light propagates in vacuum is independent both of the motion of the light source and of the inertial frame of reference of the observer. The constancy of the speed of light was postulated by Albert Einstein in 1905, motivated by Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism and the lack of evidence for the luminiferous ether; it has since been consistently confirmed by many experiments. The theory of special relativity explores the consequences an invariant speed c and the assumption that the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames of reference. One consequence is that c is the speed at which all massless particles and waves, including light, must travel.

Which is basically saying that nothing can break the speed of light. However, physics has major loopholes right now, so you may be able to break it.

It will be interesting to see the day when that happens.

it was supposed to be impossible to fly but we did that and now ill use a scientists favourite quote, "what if?"

I think that the possibility is out there for us to be able to travel in space, but as for right now, it is not something that is available to us, as the technology that we currently possess is not advanced enough to make it possible and practical, especially considering the time factor.

I agree with the sparrow and the hawk ladies. It will take many a year till our civilization is actually ready for that. BTW, if you wanna read something about that, I suggest following this link as it's my idea on how an alter Earth made preparations for space travel between that Earth and their Alpha Centaury star. Which I should mention, has a different name in the story if I'm not mistaken. wink

in the future i reacond so. but it wil take years to build something that can stay in the air safty and more years to find a good way to get air. if you just build the wings then forget would only be able to fly so high before you saficate.

Ah yes, but what if you didn't need air anymore? Or food or drink? I think space travel would be much safer for us if we could eliminate those needs somehow. 3nodding

Well... the whole Jurassic Park thing... Don't mess with nature. It would be cool, but we are not without risk. Now, I have to say, get a few billion billion gallons of water and we would be good to go. All we need to do is separate it, and use it for plants to make food, and use the oxygen for us, and the hydrogen for the spaceship. Now... where to get the water...
PostPosted: Thu Mar 18, 2010 11:24 am

Just mix hydrogen (this you can get from any star) and oxygen but, where to get the oxygen? xd

Hold plants on the ship? Mix their oxygen with the hydrogen.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:23 am

Yeah but at night, they consume oxygen instead so there should be a better way.

I just like my idea about modifying the human body better. That way you don't have to worry about where you're going to get the basic needs or if you're going to be sucked by the vacuum of space or stuff like that. You know?
