Lost Colony
Sci-fi Western Roleplay
Story
Earth was once our home. Now, she is a hollowed shell of what she once was. Wet cut her, poisoned her, defiled her very being. She can no longer support us.
Or she doesn't want to.
So we did all we could do. We left.
By the millions, we piled onto colossal Colony Ships equipped with everything we would need to survive the trip and some raw materials in case we needed to make anything specific to life on a given planet. The trips were long and quite boring. Space travel was quite routine, back on Earth, so whatever surreal effect gliding endlessly through the cosmos might have had was all but lost. It was more like going on a road trip for the first time. A whole lot of nothing with little bits of excitement tucked in here and there.
Our ship, EAS Hope, was bound for a distant star home to a Earth-sized planet in the Goldie Locks zone. We didn't know anything about the strange planet, except the name scientist gave it for observational purposes.
Kantur 581 C.
We learned more about what was soon to be our new home as we drew closer and sixty one years after passing the point of no return, we discovered she was a desert. We had spent the past two hundred and ninety years traveling to an arid planet. There was some panic at first, but in case just such an event occurred was the very reason we had a plentiful supply of natural resources. And luckily for us, another two hundred and twenty nine years to conjure up a solution.
It wasn't all that difficult, really. We already had everything we needed; Artificial farms and water purification units. Now, we just needed more.
All projects were completed on schedule. Each ship played host to twelve massive water purification units and dozens of artificial farms. Everything was ready and waiting for Arrival Day, then tragedy did what it so often does and struck when it was least expected.
Our ship was the first to land successfully on the alien planet and one by one the others followed. The last ship to enter atmo was the EAS Phoenix. However, only moments after entering the alien atmosphere there was a malfunction which lead to the violent removal of one of the Colony Ships six thrusters and cause the Phoenix to crash to the planets surface in a flaming ball which rivaled the mighty white suns brightness for several long minutes. Unfortunately, the Phoenix was unable to transmit a distress signal, nor it's coordinates. In fact, no one could transmit anything. Something about the planets magnetic field made any type of long distance communication impossible.
However, plans went on scheduled. Colonization took place after several safety-checks gave the green light to open the airlocks. It wasn't long before six primary settlements were established. Even faster were the scores of towns that dotted the outskirts. For many years, life was good. Not easy, but good nonetheless. That is, however, until we discovered them.
New Earth, we soon found, had an indigenous population. A very unfriendly one, at that. The beast the roamed the dunes would never dare attack a town, but the natives, the Sorin, they were aggressive and relentless. They attacked towns on whim and killed indiscriminately. Their message was clear: Get out.
The problem was, we had nowhere else to go, so some of use decided to send a message back. Men would team up in the hundred and venture out into the dunes and hunt the natives down using vastly superior weapons. In the first ten years on New Earth they managed to eat up every ounce of energy that made shaving off microscopic layers of lead and firing it a near-light speeds possible. It didn't take long to find a solution, however.
They called it "Dust", mainly because of it's texture and how it formed. The natives were obsessed with it. Everywhere Dust was or was going to be, they were there, collecting it. Dust, you see, is very combustible. Just a little charge and it'll burst into flames. Perfect for making engines run. . . And bullets fly.
Being forced to use primitive firearms was a minor setback and hunting natives resumed as normal. However, pushing the home team too far is the last thing you want to do. . . Why? They always know things you don't.
Under the cover of a massive sandstorm which swept across most of New Earth once every eleven years, the Sorin snuck into four of the original six settlements and destroyed valuable technology, including the Water Purification units. The four recently attacked settlements, unable to water their crops or hydrate their population, were forced to make a decision. They could immigrate to the remaining two, very distant settlements or they could simply take from them.
Raids became commonplace and it seemed as though New Earth had become a free for all fight for resources. Some compared it to the Wild West of Old Earth.
Some stay and fight. Others, well, others decided it wasn't worth it. Instead, they placed they gambled their lives on a rumor. A rumor of a ship that fell from the sky. A mysterious "Lost Colony" which just might have operation water purification units and artificial farms for anyone who knows how to use them. However, these people have to go all in. There is no turning back. The desert is a dangerous place, one filled with vicious monsters, hostile natives and desperate humans. . .

New Earth/Kroatos
Known as New Earth to the Humans and Kroatos to the Sorin, it is an arid planet home to vicious creatures of many shapes, sizes and form.

Water Purification Units are essential to the survival of Humans on alien planets. A Water Purification Unit is a massive system capable of drawing water from the driest of conditions and purifying it for human use and consumption.
Artificial Farms
Artificial Farms are above ground closed systems that allow humans to produce vegetation in environments that are considered infertile.
Dust
