I quite like The Scarring Party and The Dead Brothers but for some reason a lot of the other stuff drives me crazy. I like it but some dark cabaret can emphasize theatricality at the expense of musicality. I saw The Stolen Babies and just didn't get it at all. Their music was just boring.
That's why I generally prefer more mainstream stuff like Sarah Slean and Tom Waits.

Tom Waits I consider to be more blues lol
The Stolen Babies don't go into this category in my mind either but I like them lol.
But yeah there are a few goups in this category who are more looks than substance, like Humanwine.

Yeah, Tom Waits himself doesn't fit the category but some of his songs are evocative of that sort of thing...broadly...lol
Do you have any cabaret-inspired recommendations for me? I'm interested in the genre - Cabaret is one of my all-time favourite movies. But I kind of gave up slogging through what I considered some sub-par artists. I'd love some help or guidance though.

Cabaret gets mixed with Dark Cabaret alot for me so what I would tell you is look into these 3 people
Harlequin Jones Meret Becker Clare Fader
They are called Dark Cabaret but it's really just straight up cabaret sound to me.
