Alexa sighed as she looked through the rather large window in her headquaters. Everyone was probably asleep by now except for the few people that were still running the ship at the moment. Her eyes looked at the stars that were so far away. Leaning back in the leather chair, she then returned her attention the laptop.

The room that was she was in, was one of the more comfortable ones. She was the captain of the ship and no one forgot that. The silver colored bed was located on the wall next to the windows, while the desk that she was sitting at was about twenty feet from the window. She hated closed spaces so the window was there for a very good reason. The wall across from the window had pictures of the captains before her, as well as her crew and family. No one knew about her past and if one asked about it, they weren't given a very kind answer. Most of the room was either silver, black or white. There was a few spots that were painted baby blue, since that was her second favorite color, but other than that it was pretty formal.

Rubbing her temples, she then fixed her pencil skirt and her white button shirt. Alexa would love to relax for a while but she had too much work to do at the moment. Someone in the ship was a traitor and for the past week she had been trying to figure out who it could be. Getting up, she decided to go for a little walk. Her pistol on her, she walked out and made sure to lock the door. No one walked into her bedroom without premission. Popping her neck, she then stretched before walked down the long hallway. The starship was one of the biggest that was ever made in the history of them and she was proud of it.

In her physical appearance, most considered her people, but it was more like everyone held that opinion but she didn't take compliments from her crew. Her dark brown hair was cut to the point between her shoulders and jaw and her eyes were bright blue. Alexa's eyes changed but so far no one had noticed it but that was due to the fact that they had only been here for about a month. She wasn't short but she wasn't tall either. Her height was 5'4" and most of the men here were taller than her and a few woman. She was slim and only weighted a 100 pounds. Yes, it wasn't how much she needed but she didn't look like a skeleton, actually she looked a lot like an hourglass but not to the complete extent. She was only 23, which was young for a captain but she did her job well.

Xander wheeled himself under his latest project yet again. He had been working all day, and in a few hours it would be all night. He was working on a new design of personal cruiser, class IV. Rather than sitting upright like most models, Xander's newest plan had the pilot in a prone position. There were some safety kinks to work out, but he was confident it would work out. He fiddled with some of the wires of the integrated computer system.

Xander had always been fascinated by machines. He loved their power, versatility, speed, everything about them. Naturally, to be involved in machines in that day and age, it was just as vital to understand advanced computer systems as it was to know one's way around a rocket-thruster. After earning advanced degrees in engineering and computer tech, Xander moved on from one starship to another, eventually landing a job as lead engineer on the current ship, the Valhalla.

He finished up what he was doing and went to the nearby utility sink to wash up. He was coated in a thin layer of grease and various other fluids from his work. He splashed water on his face and looked at himself in the mirror. His thick, brown hair was disheveled from the long day. When it was tended to, it had natural honey highlights. His piercing green eyes were rimmed with red from fatigue. Xander rubbed off on last smudge of grease from his slash of a jaw and turned back to admire his handiwork.

The newest design was very sleek and stylish, perfect for any market. It consisted largely of a pod in which the pilot would lie prone, which boasted one large primary thruster on the rear. Two thick panels that served as wings projected from the side, each of which was mounted with a smaller secondary thruster. Xander smiled and pushed a small button near the back of the craft and the control-bay opened like an enormous bivalve mollusk. He reached inside and flicked a switch, activating the main computer mainframe. He stepped back and prepped for a diognostic program.

He touched two fingers to the touch-screen watch on his wrist. A large holographic image of the small craft leaped into the air. With a touch of a suspended icon, the image broke into a detailed schematic. Xander rotated the image on several axes, periodically tapping a certain system. The ship would run that system, ensure that it was working properly, and the part of the schematic that corresponded with the system would turn green. Xander muttered to himself as each system checked out. Finally, the entire ship was in the green except for one part that remained to be checked. He rotated the image appropriately.

"Testing, primary thruster," he said. He tapped the floating image of the ship on the large thruster. It flickered green as the ship briefly fired the thruster. After a moment, however, the thruster coughed black smoke. The image on the hologram shifted to red, and one by one, the other systems went red as well. The ship shuddered, all of its systems attempting to fire at once. Xander foresaw what was coming, and tapped a small red icon in the corner of the display, opening a comm link to the Valhalla's main computer. "Valerie, blast-shields!" he yelled into the mic. Valerie was the name given to the Valhalla's computer personality. Heavy iron doors immediately flew downward, just in time for the craft to blast off uncontrolably. It crashed into the far end of the hangar in a fiery explosion, sending shrapnel all the way to Xander, who was ducking behind the personelle blast shield. Still, small shards of metal slashed at his face. The concussive blast echoed throughout the Valhalla. Xander coughed as thick black smoke rolled through the hangar. He groaned quietly, upset about the loss of his project and sore from the shockwaves from the blast.

Coffee sounded wonderful at the moment, so she decided to check the ship quickly by foot instead of doing it the fast way since someone could always mess with the technology. Hopefully she would be able to get a few hours of sleep before the rest of the people on the trip decided to wake up. Glancing down the hallway that was to her right which was where the sleeping quarters were for most of the people, she didn't hear anything so she kept going. She was slightly surprised that no one was roaming the halls tonight, usually there was a few people walking around. Tilting her head to the side, she smiled a little when she reached the kitchen, finding Amelia Croft there.

Amelia stood up and saluted her before Alexa nodded her head a little, letting her she could go back to what she was doing. Amelia sat back down and continued to write. People rarely did that these days with all the laptops and other modern things. She shaked her head and waited for the water to boil before she could make her plain instant coffee. Yeah, she wasn't in the mood to take the time to make something that would be amazing, she just wanted coffee.

After she finished, she took the cup out to the hallway with her and passed a long row of windows. She was glad this place wasn't just a metal box without any openings. It didn't take her too long to finish the coffee and she set the cup down at a small table that happened to be in the commons. Since a few people had come here with families, the place had a few comfortable places, it wasn't just a work place...it was home. All of a sudden she heard slams.. Narrowing her eyes, she quickly got up and ran towards the sound. She had been here for a while and knew when something was going wrong. Other people were running out of the hallways but they moved out of her way once they saw her and followed her footsteps. Hearing the blast before it came, she kneeled, not wanting to get swept off her feet and the others did the same.

She could hear things breaking and after a few moments she got back up and ran. Stopping at the huge steel door way, she put in the password before it slowly opened. Black smoke flowed out of the room and flooded her lungs for a second. Alexa went in, her short heels clicking against the metal floor. "Xander!" she said trying to keep her voice level. She cared for the people in her crew but she rarely showed it. Her voice had a cold edge to it, but it wasn't as harsh as it usually was. She knew he was the only one that would be working at this time in here. The rest would've gone to bed. "He better have a good explanation for all of this.." she muttered under her breath as more people came. They would help clean up the mess along with the robots they had engineered.

She coughed a few more times and gave out a couple more orders. Walking around, she was determined to find him at the moment and wait for him to explain himself. It was probably another experiment of some sorts. Sighing, she brushed her hair out of her face and pulled out her pistol. If he happened to be the traitor and did all of this on purpose, he would be very sorry.

Before the smoke had even cleared, Xander had opened a comm link with Valerie requesting a damage report. Bars of progress flickered across the hologram and a running list of systems ran in a ticker across the bottom of the screen. Several items were highlighted in red and were itemized in a list labeled as "in need of repair." Xander walked halfway across the hangar and examined what was left of the malfunctioning thruster. There wasn't much left, and it was impossible to judge exactly what had gone wrong. He heard someone enter the room and slowly turned to see who it was. He saw Alexa and jumped to his feet, saluting without deactivating his watch. It continued to stream information at his side.

Xander had always held tremendous respect for Alexa, even more so than most of the crew. Despite her best efforts, he always felt that she had many more facets than she let on. Regardless, he was probably in some deep trouble for causing yet another explosion in the hangar. "My apologies," he began, "there was a...malfunction." He felt his face grow warm under the scrutinizing eyes of his commander. He always felt abnormally self-concious when he was around her. The pistol at Alexa's side certainly didn't help matters. Everyone knew there was a traitor on board, but Xander didn't feel he was worthy of an armed confrontation. His watch *pinged* and he glanced downward at it. The check was complete. A robotic voice chimed, "Energy couplings C1, C2, E5, S1, S2, S3, and S4 are in need of repair."

This was not evidence in favor of Xander's innocence. Energy couplings were incredibly sensitive instruments that regulated the flow of power to individual systems. A large impact, or explosion, could jarr them hard enough to throw off their hardware and could pose a power-short hazard. Repairing them was a lengthy process, and required complete shut-down of their designated systems. The couplings having problems were connected to communications, engines, and most prominantly, security. "Uhm...I'll take care of those ASAP..." he said sheepishly.

Well at least he had some respect for her, that she was happy with. He always had respected her and she knew she shouldn't think of him as the possible traitor but with everything that had just happened, the thought had to cross her mind. Crossing her arms, she listened to the information that was blurted out next to him. Robots... no respect for the capitan which was kind of sad but she would live. Raising an eyebrow she took a few steps closer to him but still kept a good distance that wouldn't make either of them uncomfortable.

He finally spoke and she waited for his explanation. Malfunction. It was one big malfunction that had caused the ship to shake. She narrowed her eyes slightly. Yeah, his face went red. He was lucky that she didn't have a short temper and she always controlled her emotions that way she wouldn't lash out at anyone. Alexa for the most part was calm but when she heard the robotic voice was again, she raised a finger to her temple, the voice didn't help out her migrain at all. "All of those?" it wasn't good and it only made her want to keep an eye on him more. "You're not going to gain my apology any time soon." she would wait until all the damage was repaired.

"Mark, Luis, Rebecca, Garret, and Amelia should be able to help you clean out the mess for now and Roxy can help with the repairs." she said as her arms feel to her sides. "You just made my job a hell of a lot harder." Alexa said before turning suddenly and walking out. With security down and a whoel lot of other things, she was going to be alert at all times, not that she wasn't now but it would be enforced. Shaking her head as she gave one last look at everything else, she looked over her should at Xander. "I want you in my office in fifteen minutes." she called out. That would be enought time for him to give out instructions to the people that she had told him would help him. He wasn't going to go anywhere near machinery without someone looking over him. She didn't want that to happen again...ever.

Alexa didn't wait for a response, instead she walked out and went straight to the nurse to get something for her migrain. A couple people saluted her as she passed by and then kept going. She personally just wanted to take some medication and sleep for a good nine hours... have breakfast in bed and- No, she needed to focus on her job. People depended on her and she wasn't going to let them down, no matter what. Someone reached out and gently grabbed her arm, pulling her into the hallway that she was passing. Her hand went to her pistol and she pulled it out, aiming it at the person as she broke their grip and pushed them against the wall. A few seconds later she realized it was James. "Paranoid much?" he asked laughing a little as the end of the pistol touched his forehead. "Don't mess with me today. Or any other day for that matter." she said in a cold tone before she took a step back and put her pistol away. He was the only one with the nerve to touch her. She could've blasted his brains out..that actually didn't sound like such a bad idea any more. "Be in my office in an hour." she told him and he started to apologize. Alexa walked off, leaving him there. After a few more minutes, she finally reached the nurse.

As soon as Alexa left the room, Xander relaxed visibly. Now it was his hand that flew to his head. None of the people she had mentioned were qualified in his mind to perform repairs on something as crucial as an energy coupling. If the ship had to veer to avoid any spacejunk, it would be up to the couplings to direct more power to the thrusters from some of the less crucial systems. He turned to the little line of other mechanics, all of whom had considerably less training than himself. "Just run what's left of the ship down to the hold..." he muttered bitterly. It was in his contract that he could have access to the hangar and whatever supplies that weren't needed elsewhere for his inventing. Things go wrong, it happens. He wished he didn't have to face down Alexa on her home turf. He was a practical guy, and he didn't appreciate being talked down to, like she was sure to do. He opened a comm link to Valerie again and requested a constant video-feed of the workers be sent to his watch. Only certain crew-members were authorized to have such a watch, because in the wrong hands it could wreak true havoc.

He left the hangar, walking slowly. A few other crew members asked him about the explosion, but he declined comment. Instead, he simply waved his watch in front of a small wall-sensor, which caused the wall to allow him passage into one of the many maintenance hatches. He walked into his sanctum. He knew what every single cable did, how every little piece played a part in the function of the Valhalla. Not only was he more comfortable in the tunnel of pipes, cables, and LED lights, but they served as a shortcut to Alexa's office. He planned on getting there a little early to get it over with. His footsteps echoed through the bowels of the ship. He mentally ran through the procedures for repairing energy couplings...

"Hey.." she said as she walked in. The nurse was filling out papers and stopped, smiling when Alexa came in. They had been pretty good friends for a while, so she didn't mind when she was saluted by her when they were alone. "Could I get something for my migrain?" she asked as she sat down at one of the empty seats.

"Give me a second." Iliana said before going to one of the cabniets and pulling out a few pulls from the bottles. "Drink this and you should be fine for a while. If it comes back, which it shouldn't, just come over again." she said before telling her to leave nicely, since she was busy with papers and what not.

"Thanks." she said over her shoulder before popping the pills in her mouth and swallowing them. She didn't have time to get water. Sighing, she walked down to where her office was. She realized she had said a while bunch of.. well you get the point. Biting her lip, she wasn't exactly looking forward to seeing Xander but it had to be done. They could discuss who could work with him on repairing the ship. She would let him decide for the most part but she needed to make sure who it was first before agreeing. Shaking her head, she opened the door to the office and walked in, taking her heels off and walking barefoot to her desk. Going around it, she sat down in the big leather chair before leaning back. Why couldn't she relax for just a little bit? Closing her eyes she put her hands against her face. Ever since that incident..she had no peace.. her past never left her even though it didn't physically follow her...

Xander finally emerged from the maintenence tunnels nearly halfway across the ship. He startled a relatively new member of the crew, but he didn't think to apologize. It was a long walk to the captain's office; It was akin to the walk to the principal's office back in grade school. He almost rolled his eyes at how foolish his feelings of anxiety were. He periodically checked his datawatch to keep an eye on his lackeys back in the hangar.

He finally reached Alexa's office. He took a steadying breath and entered, knocking quietly as he did so. He knew she had a killer headache, maybe a full-throttle migraine, so he made an effort to be quiet. He even turned down the display on his datawatch, though he made sure he could clearly see what was going on in the hangar. So far, nothing of note had occurred. He sat across from Alexa in an overstuffed recliner. He checked his datawatch anxiously. His hands were used to being constantly in motion.

"Come in." she said and sat up straight, placing her hands on the table, looking calm as always. Well, he was on time, which was good. She was strict, she had to be in such a big ship. "So..." she blinked when he kept glancing at his hands. She knew he was used to always moving around and what not, so she ignored it afterwards. "How many people can actually help you repair the couplings?" Alexa asked as she glanced over at the screen that was facing her on the table. Cameras... the cameras where down, which reminded her she had to get people to guards posts. What a pain!

"And what exactly happened? I heard that you were working on a new project... why did it explode?" she crossed her arms once again out of habit and watched him closely. She knew she wasn't going to get any sleep for the next thirty-six hours so she might as well figure out what happened. He seemed nervous... She guessed she might have that affect on people but she hoped she wasn't scary or anything, though that could be amusing. She smirked a little at her own thoughts and then turned her full attention onto him once again. His datawatch, she had noticed it and now realized that he was watching it. She had one of her own but at the moment it was in her bedroom. The fingerprint lock had to work...otherwise she wouldn't have a place to escape from anyone for a while.

Xander noted with some dismay that the cameras throughout the ship were deactivated, probably as some sort of precaution to prevent a power-short. He mentally pawed through the files of the Valhalla's maintenance crew, searching for someone that could handle the responsibility of the couplings. "I guess the only one I could trust would be that Taveral kid...Derek?" Derek Taveral had transferred to the Valhalla from a battleship with the Space-Navy. He would have been extensively trained in coupling repair, as they were the first sign of a ship in trouble during bouts with space pirates. "Other than him, there's no one I would be willing to put on the job." He knew that it would appear as if he was trying to take care of the job single-handedly, but it would be him in hot water if the couplings weren't repaired properly.

"Well, as near as I can tell," he said in response to her question about the incident in the hangar, "the main thruster busted a seal. It heated up, fried some sensors." He began ticking off the things that went wrong on his fingers. "The cooling system kicked on to prevent an engine fire, but without the sensors, it didn't know when to stop pumping coolant. It dried itself up, tried to keep pumping, and fried. Without coolant, the engine heated unchecked, blasting the onboard computer with heat, compromising the micro-conductors. The engine fired, the thing took off without a guidance system, and it went boom." He had long ago run out of fingers to count the issues on, so his hands drifted back to his lap, still fiddling with each other nervously. "There was probably some other stuff...I couldn't tell for sure from the wreckage." He still kept an eye on the workers in the hangar.

That medicine was starting to kick in and she felt a bit better by the time Xander spoke. Derek... yeah, he would do. He had been trusted by other capitan's, so she would be fine with him. Nodding her head to his suggestion, she then kept her eyes on him. She wasn't staring him down or anything, the anger had died down for the most part, she was just watching. Opening one of the drawers, she filled out the paper. It would get Derek out of his other duties for however long it took them to repair the couplings. She would try and contact other ships so she could get a couple more people helping them out but she doubted anyone would be willing to.

Alexa listened as he talked about what had happened before signing the bottom of the page and sliding the paper towards him. He would be able to hand it over to Derek that way there wouldn't be any problems with anyone that wanted to mess with them. It was offically her order and if they messed with them, they messed with her. "Make sure nothing like that happens again. I don't need this ship to break down completely." her voice was slightly softer but it was still firm, she was in charge of Valhalla after all. "Take that paper to Derek and give me a report on the progress in five hours." she stood up, making the chair go back a little. Her head spinned for a second and she placed her hands on the table to keep her balance. She tried to do her best and make it seem like nothing was wrong... hopefully he wouldn't notice. She didn't want to seem weak in front of anyone in her crew.

Xander didn't plan on giving Derek too much responsibility. He was very much a "if you want it done right, do it yourself" sort of person. He only put Derek on the job to placate Alexa. He took her order and stood, preparing to leave. He paused, however, when Alexa seemed to swoon slightly behind her desk. "Are you ok?" he asked. His voice had a faint tinge of hysteria to it; He was unused to seeing the captain in any position other than one of perfect control. He called Valerie. "Val, run a health-check on the captain, here. Feed the data to me, I guess," he said as he noticed she wasn't wearing her datawatch.

[Grr short.]

"I'm fine." she answered keeping her voice calm as she closed her eyes, hoping that would make the dizziness go away. She let go of the desk and straighted her shoulders, all of a sudden hearing screaming in the back of her mind. Her hands flew up to her head as she winced, though she was in a whole lot more pain than she let on at the moment, even now she was trying to hide it. "Don'-" she was cut off when she collapsed on the floor, out cold. Alexa didn't want no health check. She hated doctors and wouldn't let a single one near her.

The screaming went away in her mind and her pulse decreased quickly and continued to do that. Her breathing was shallow as well. The pill she had taken hadn't been the one she needed. Her own friend could've been the one that had done it on purpose... or someone that had set her up. A second later there was a knock on the door and James came in, early for his little meeting. "Capitan?" he blinked when he saw Xander there... seeing Alexa on the floor, his eyes widened. His reaction could've been different if no one had been there but Xander would never know. "What did you do to her?!" he asked as he walked over quickly. Of course, put all the blame onto the other person. No one on this ship had ever seen Alexa in this state and if she could help it, she wouldn't let anyone else find out about it when she woke up. She wanted them to see their leader as a strong, independent person that way they would strive to be the same way. Her skin turned even paler, almost as white as the wall.

((Same here =/ ))
PostPosted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 8:34 pm

Information scrolled across the display of Xander's datawatch. Heartrate, body temperature, bloodflow, neurological data, everything anyone would want to know about Alexa's health. James burst onto the scene, already throwing about accusation. That was all too like him. Xander stood to defend himself, but halted when a very red message sprang into the air from his watch. It read in bold type, "ENERGY COUPLING E1 REMOVED. ENERGY COUPLING E1 REMOVED." On cue, the ship listed dangerously to the right. Back-up systems would have corrected the roll and yaw, but the systems weren't receiving power. No coupling. Alarms blared, and the ship slowly continued its tilt like a dying behemoth. The easy chairs in the office began to slide, as did the room's occupants. Panicked crew members ran about in the halls, searching for something to hold on to. The captain was poisoned, the ship was being dismantled...what else could go wrong? Suddenly, the ship picked up speed and began to move forward as well as to the side. Xander ran/slid into the hallway and looked out the window.

He was greeted by a view of a gigantic planet. It was a mottled green, like an enormous marble, and bizarre atmospheric winds twirled its clouds into strange patterns. "Alexa!" Xander said urgently, "We're headed for Jayda XII!" Jayda XII was a recently discovered planet that was still relatively unexplored. In fact, the only sort of information about the planet was gleaned from various probes fired from Darius, a planet in the adjacent star-system. "What do we do?"

She groaned when her head hit the wall, waking her up. What happened? a chair was coming her way and she quickly moved out of the way, not wanting to get smashed. Xander was running out of the room. "Report!" she yelled loud enough for him to hear, she needed to know what was going on before she decided what to do. Biting her lip, she got up, regaining control. Yeah, she felt sick to her stomach but everyone in the ship was in danger and she needed to save them. Running out, she motioned for Xander to follow her. She was going to the control room, the very front of the ship where she could steer the ship. Yelling orders as she ran down the hallways, she wanted people to do something instead of just stand there. She swore under her breath as she saw the planet. This wasn't good. They would either have to do an emergency landing and wait for someone to come and help them...which was very unlikely or pull out of the the planet's gravity feild. Shaking her head, she pushed past someone and kept going.

A few second later, she slid into the room she had been going to. As soon as Andrew saw her, he moved out of the way to let her take control. "Fire up the jets to full blast, I'm getting us out of here." turning the ship around so that the back of it was facing the earth, sweat coated her forehead as she her fingers flew across the long complex keyboard. "Xander, how much fuel do we have?" she then yelled into the mircophone that was a little to the right, telling everyone that could help in one way or another to go to their stations. The families had to go near the center of the ship. "Please tell me our jets are still working." she pulled the lever and it seemed to fail for a second before it roared to life. "Come on.. come on..." she swallowed. "Evacuate the back of the ship!" she yelled into the mic again, if things got even worse, she would dismantle the back end to lose the weight. If it got jammed she would have to get people to go down there and help out. "How many miles from the surface of the planet?" she asked, hoping they could give her a quick answer.

Different things were blinking and beeping and a few were even saying phrases... They were already in emergency mode, if they weren't able to get out of this now, they would have to land on the planet...no way out of it. Her eyesight was getting blurry and she grabbed Xander's arm since Andrew was doing his best with controlling half of the ship. "Tell me what's blinking." yeah, it sounded like a silly request but she could barely see at the moment and she knew the keyboard by heart, she just needed to know what was changing color and what not.
