Welcome to the great hall. This is where all meals and special events are held. It's pretty much where everything comes together.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 01, 2010 11:38 am

It felt great to be back. It was going to be Katherine’s second year teaching, and after all the drama that happened in the summer she was glad to come back to Hogwarts. Rein wasn’t going to be here after all, and for that she was now grateful. It seemed like only a few weeks ago that they were in love and dating, happy with their lives. However, after all their drama she was glad to be away from him and back at Hogwarts. She was now the sole teacher of Herbology and she was looking forward to teaching all the students this year.

As she took her seat at the Teacher’s Table, she looked around the Great Hall to see who had come back. She saw a few familiar faces here and there and was glad. A lot of good friends had graduated yet again this summer and it was extremely unfortunate. Some of them were returning to be assistant teachers and some were going to be Professors but some were not. She missed seeing some of the people that graduated but this was a fact of life. People moved on and kept going with their lives, wherever it took them.

Leaning back in her chair, she looked around the Great Hall again before she turned to see which professors had come already, ready to start striking up conversation. She was interested to know what people did during their holiday and anxious to forget her own after all.

Alexander sighed as he walked into the Great Hall. This was thoroughly depressing. No Alyssa, no Myles. He was rather alone this year. ‘Looks like I need to make some new friends.’ He thought to himself as he walked over to the Slytherin table, taking a seat near a bunch of fellow seventh years and greeting them, earning a greeting in response. ‘Maybe it won’t be so bad.’ He thought as he began striking up conversation with them.

He had a relatively boring summer, nothing compared to his last summer. He had gotten more into his work, taking on more high end events and getting more photos published. He had done some more work with the Daily Prophet and other newspapers and magazines alike. Thankfully, none of his shots got him in trouble like the one that he took of Hikari did. He made sure that he stayed away from anything that possibly would have caused drama like that.

However, he was glad to be back. It had been relatively quiet during his summer and he just wanted to come back to Hogwarts and learn the things he needed to for his final year. He was interested in what Hogwarts had to offer him and he couldn’t wait to get started.

Seth Norton strode into the great hall, unable to contain a gasp of amazement. The long room stretched out before him, just as he had imagined it. The candles, gently bobbing and flickering... The smell of wax and stone... I can't believe I made it, Seth thought. I'm actually here. Esrath, a glittery-black snake that had been traveling with Seth since his last visit to Egypt, poked his head out from Seth's robes and looked around. He ssssed his approval as Seth let out a quiet, elated laugh.
"You're right about that, Ez. It certainly is awesome." Looking around, he located the Ravenclaw banner and seated himself at the table under it. Although he appeared at ease, Seth's arctic-blue eyes never stopped looking around for danger. The velvet holster on his hip was worn from having a wand torn from it so many times. As Seth reached for an empty goblet, inspecting it, the sleeve of his cloak fell back slightly, revealing a contorted burn scar that seemed to go up his entire left forearm. He quickly pushed his sleeve down as he looked at the goblet. "What the hell?" he murmured to Esrath. "I thought Hogwarts was renowned for its food. This is entirely too much like what we've been eating for the past month," he said irritatedly, indicating the empty space.

~Emily A. Wixom~

Emily Anne Wixom was placed besides the Headmasters chair. In all honesty she thought this entire thing was stupid. The ministry didn't trust her to take the full title of Headmistress since she would turn 21 in October, so they were taking over. Kind of. She said kind of because they hadn't sent anyone to actually watch. No, Emily was expected to 'train' which meant that she was stuck sitting as Deputy Headmistress, but dealing with everything the Headmaster would, as well as her own things. The difference was she wrote a letter to the Ministry explaining everything happening each week, and before she did any 'serious' action, she wrote and waited for approval. Emily shook her head with a sigh. She didn't believe she was exactly ready for this either, but somehow she was the next one in line.

She wasn't sure what to think about her Charms classes. She wouldn't be teaching them this year. Instead Atticus Travis would be teaching while she just sat and monitored it all. Thinking of Atticus made her even more confused. The man thought she was a complete ditz, and too hyper for her own good. Maybe he was right, but he still didn't have to think he was any better. She was just as stubborn and proud as he was. The only thing he had against her right now was the fact that he had watched her make a complete idiot out of herself as she taught Charms for a year. Now he would get his turn however, and he would realize it wasn't the piece of cake he seemed to think it was. Then there were the other times when he would take her and calm her from near hysteria. He would be so sweet, but by the time she could turn around again he would be cold and mocking. Nothing she could ever do would help her to understand men. Least of all Atticus Jeremy Travis.

When Katherine looked around Emily smiled and waved. "Good evening Katherine. How was your holiday?" Emily smiled sweetly as she took a sip of her pumpkin juice, wishing for something stronger to calm her nerves and frustrations for this first night of school. She knew she would regret it in the morning however when she had to face Atticus and the N.E.W.T. Charms class. For now she would just have to be content making idle conversation. That was fine though. She was perfectly capable of idle conversation.

~Laura S. Brechkovsky~

Laura was eating quietly and reading one of her books when a boy she didn't recognize sat in front of her. Peering over the top of her book she saw that he seemed about a year older than her, and he had a snake around his shoulders. She was amused when he started speaking to the snake, but like normal she hid her smile behind her military bearing. Laura Samantha Brechkovsky was not one to break protocol, even outside of her home. Her entire time at Hogwarts she had been rod strait, speaking only when spoken too, and never so much as smiling let alone laughing. She knew that many people thought she had an extremely cold personality because of this, but what did she care? She was getting through her classes, and she was easily top of her year. Transfiguration was the only class that ever gave her a run for her money, and even that she sailed by easier than many others.

Laura saw the burn mark appear momentarily and buried herself in her book again. She wasn't one to snoop, this boy was just interesting. She said that because though Laura didn't show a lot of warmth and interest on the outside, she paid very close attention silently. Therefore she knew her fellow Ravenclaw's. All except this one, and that intrigued her. She saw him wave at the empty space in front of him, and speak to his snake. She noticed his accent was different than the normal Brits around, and that made her even more interested. His irritability however annoyed her. Instantly after that however, the table filled with food and Laura placed her book down. She looked directly at the boy, not bothering to hide the fact that she was trying to get all the detail she could. She looked at him for a moment longer before speaking. "So, you are not happy with ze food 'ere at Hogvarts?" She asked cooly as she motioned to everything around her. Laura had long since mastered how to pronouce the English words correctly, and if she really wanted she could make it so she didn't have her Russian accent at all. This time however she let it drip out of her mouth as thick as Molasses.

Seth gaped at the food that magically appeared in front of him. Inspecting it as if expecting some trick, he cautiously tried a bite, pronouncing it quite delicious. There was haggis, spicy black pudding sausages, bangers and mash, pumpkin juice and more. Had he not been interested more in wolfing it down, he would have cried at the sheer beauty of the sight. Esrath occupied himself attempting to swallow a meatball bigger than his head. Seth snickered as the snake unhinged his jaw and slowly sucked the morsel into his gullet. Neither of them had eaten a decent meal in a month.
From the corner of his vision he caught a searching gaze coming from the top of a book. The person hiding behind it finally put her book down and spoke in an atrocious accent he identified as Russian. Without missing a beat, Seth smiled slightly and offered his hand, saying, "Привет, Меня зовут Seth Norton."

~Laura S. Brechkovsky~

Laura breathed deeply and shook her head suppressing her smile as she watched the boy wolf down his food. The snake trying to eat the meat ball made many at the table laugh, and had Laura been an ordinary girl she probably would have cracked up at it as well. She was strong however and she pushed it deep down as she got her own food. In fact, the entire time she had been reading her book she had sat with her back perfectly strait, her eyes strait on the book, her feet flat on the ground, heels meeting to make a 45 degree angle, one hand holding the book, and the other fingers strait, thumb along the forefinger, and laid gently on her thigh; fingertips meeting her knee cap. It was how Laura always sat, and the only change she made when she put her book down was to place the other hand in the same position as the other on her thigh.

When he spoke to her and held out his hand, Laura made no movement except extending out her own right hand, and shaking his with a firm, determined grip. "Laura Brechkovsky." Her words were just as firm and put together as herself and her handshake. As she spoke there were a few shocked murmurs around the table saying things like "It speaks. He actually got the robot to speak." but she ignored it. Laura was seen all over Hogwarts as a 'robot' but she didn't pay them any mind. There wasn't a part of Laura that wasn't fully put together. Her robes were neatly ironed and perfectly black. There were no creases, and her Prefect badge was strait and positively shining since she had polished it just that morning. Underneath her robes she wore slacks just as black and neat as her robes, and a white blouse perfectly starched and ironed that was just below her waist line hanging neat and strait. Her stockings were clean and pulled right up where they needed to be, and her black shoes had a fresh coat of polish on them from her labor this morning. Yes, Laura Samantha Brechkovsky was as neat as a pin, and as confident as could be.

Laura quietly looked around at the table before piling food onto her plate, and starting on the feast herself. She ate just with one hand. Her left hand never left its perfect position on her thigh, just like it never had when she read her book. Her back remained straight as she brought the food to her mouth instead of leaning in to go to it. After a few moments however, she swallowed the food in her mouth, set her fork down, took a drink of pumpkin juice, set it, down, and looked at the boy, all the while, not even twitching her left arm. "You'll find that Hogwarts has a lot to offer. That is, if you aren't completely opposed to trying new things, and you actually want to be here." Her Russian accent was still slightly prominent, but nowhere near as thick as she had allowed it to drawl before. With that Laura shot a glance at Mary Austin at the Slytherin table. The girl was looking just as annoying as ever, and Laura couldn't help but wonder how long it would take her twin to meet Mary. Laura was sure that once the two girls met, there was no stopping their friendship, and those two alone would be a terror not envied to be seen. She forced herself forward again however, and went back to her food.

Seth allowed himself a moment of smug triumph, though he showed no outward signs of it. Looks like Ms. Chilly here is both an authority figure and a subject of ridicule, he mused, studying her prefect badge. Though it seems that my Russian thawed her a little. His intense gaze bored into Laura's as he replied to her rather condescending description of Hogwarts.
"Trying new things, huh? We've been there, haven't we, Esrath?" The two exchanged glances, Seth smirking and Esrath making a valiant attempt at the same, sharing some inside joke between them. The conspiratorial moment was short however, and Seth returned his attention to Laura. "As for wanting to be here," he said, voice suddenly icy, "Hogwarts is infinitely preferable to life on the run." He glanced to his left arm, showing Laura he knew he had caught her looking. His smile never wavered, making an eerie contrast to his tone of voice. But the moment passed, and he said lightly, "I'd watch the condescension there. That's not going make you many friends. Especially those who have risked more than their own life to come here."
Maybe that will rattle the self-important Ruskie, he thought angrily. Esrath nipped him discretely on the hand, whispering something in parseltongue Seth deciphered as,
"You're overreacting."
"You're right," Seth conceded. "But so do many on stomachs as empty as ours."
"We have a world of enemies on our back already. We need none from this place."
"Though the majority of them aren't my fault... Okay, so they are, but the circumstances are completely different. And she's still annoying." Esrath rolled his eyes and sneaked a sip of pumpkin juice from Seth's goblet.

Laura was silently sipping pumpkin juice when Seth spoke to her. So he thinks he's pretty cool. she thought to herself as she watched him. She didn't say a word, but sat there with one hand holding the flask of juice that was pressed to her lips. Laura hadn't allowed herself to show a flicker of expression through this little conversation, and she wasn't about to now. In fact, if you asked her too, Laura wouldn't really be sure how to show emotion. She held silent when he said that they had tried new things. When he said that Hogwarts was preferable to life on the run she gave a curt nod to show her understanding, but still remained silent. If he thought he was all high and mighty, why was he sitting here at Ravenclaw? He seemed more like a Slytherin or Gryffindor. She was fully aware of his stiff manner, but Laura was used to it. She watched students get comfortable with each other, but stay formal with her. She knew it was probably because of how stiff and formal she was, but that was just how she had been her entire life. It wasn't like she could help it.

When the boy told her that she needed to watch her condescension her eyes narrowed just slightly and she placed her flask down and her hand on her thigh once more. She listened to the boy hiss to the snake around his shoulder and kept her lips pursed. When he seemed finished she decided to speak. "I don't know what you mean by condescension when you are treating me just as formal. If anything, you should watch where you speak to that snake because people are not going to think highly of you. What I meant by liking Hogwarts, is quite innocent actually. My twin sister is in Slytherin, and she will do anything she can to make this place tumble. She hates Hogwarts thinking it is beneath her because it accepts muggle borns and half bloods. She just transferred from Durmstrang institute this semester, so she is not happy. Miss Mary Austin is also a transfer student that would love to see this place crumble. I was merely wondering if you were like those two girls since you are new as well." With that said Laura picked up her spoon and dug into some mashed potatoes being careful not to take too much so she could manage it easily. She wasn't even 5 feet tall, but she could be proper when eating.

Seth laughed softly. "I've had more important things to care about than my image for a long time. Why on earth would I worry about something as trite as talking to my friend?" He pulled up his sleeve for a split second, revealing the expanse of the mottled, horrific burn. "You may want to consider just how sheltered you have been since the Dark Lord of Britain fell. In other parts of the world, however, the power vacuum left by dear Mr. Riddle has been well filled, and the people there are left to deal with it on their own." And it was true. Seth thought back to the last time he was in Egypt. Or rather, escaping from it. He had been lost in a sea of slate-gray fog, hearing only the noise of wind and the hiss as Killing Curses shot by him. His fingers were numb on the handle of his Aethersprite, turning and rolling as another volley of spells lit up the fog. A blasting charm hit one of the fins near the missile-like nose of the broom, sending a shower of sparks into Seth's face. Eyes streaming, face speckled with tiny burns, he heaved up on the handle and climbed, coaxing every last ounce of speed from the broom. Bubble head charm, he thought as the air grew thin and bitterly cold. His hand shuddered as he reached for his wand and performed the spell, looking repeatedly over his shoulder.
Wrenching himself from the memory, Seth shivered. He had spent six hours in the upper atmosphere with nothing but a small warming potion and a handful of sherbet lemons to sustain him as he fled from Haru Asar and his, well, henchmen for lack of a better word. He hoped he had bought Chione enough time to escape. He never saw her again after that night.
A hiss from Esrath brought him back to the present. Dessert had started, and Seth hurriedly pulled his plate out of Esrath's reach as all manner of delicious things appeared on it.

Laura's face was still an expressionless mask. She wasn't sure what she thought of this new boy yet. She was quickly leaning towards disliking him however. He seemed cocky and self confident like her sister Viktorya. Laura knew that the cocky ones fell the hardest because of their pride, and she was quickly getting annoyed at the fact that this one seemed to think he was better than her because he was on the run. Was running from people trying to kill you supposed to be cool? Laura hadn't gotten that memo. Even if she had though, she probably wouldn't have wasted her time with it. She wasn't the most popular girl in school as it was. What did she care what people thought?

"I see you are under the impression that because I'm pureblood I'm sheltered." She chose her words carefully and spoke deliberately like she always did. It hadn't been a question, but a statement. Laura wasn't one to second guess herself, or be shy when speaking her mind. In class she held her tongue, but when it came to her peers she would let them have it. No matter what year they were. A couple seventh year Slytherin's had teamed up against her first year because of how small she was. She hadn't backed down however. She stood her ground and got right up in their face, not showing an ounce of fear. Laura was not someone that let herself get pushed around. "Well Mr. Norton, I am Pureblood as you may have guessed when I said my sister thinks Hogwarts is beneath her. I can assure you that I am not sheltered however. No I have not lived as full of a life as you seem to have, but I do not wish too. I will leave that to the Slytherin's and Gryffindor's since I am perfectly content with my books. You must realize however that the wizarding world is not the only world I know however. You see, unlike most pureblood families, my father deals a great deal with the muggle world. In fact, he is a Colonel General in the Muggle Russian Army." Laura let this sink in for a moment as she took a sip of her juice, and watched the boy for a reaction. After a moment however she set her glass down and returned her hand to her leg still looking at the boy. "I won't pretend it's anything amazing, and I won't pretend I'll be absolutely amazing if faced in dark circumstances, but I'm not as naive as you seem to think I am."

Laura gave the boy a piercing stare before branching off to another way his words could have been taken. "Of course, if it's threats you are making, we don't take kindly to that sort of thing here." With that said Laura dug into dessert just as confidently and poised as she had supper. Let him think she was forward. He was the one that had said she needed to worry about how sheltered she was since the Dark Lord had fallen. He was the one that was calling the Dark Lord his 'dear Mr. Tom Riddle' with his tone just dripping with respect. What else was Laura supposed to think?

Alyssa Bates

The beginning of a new school year was the only thought of the blonde as she walked into the great hall and took a seat at the teachers table. The female let out a long frustrated sigh. She was no longer a student. It kind of scared her, to say the least. Sure her grandmother had been by her side every step of the way this summer teaching her the basic about stuff like that. Alyssa was just very thankful for the fact that her grandmother offered to stay another year. She wasn't alone. The blonde wasn't exactly sure how she would have delt with this year on her own. She would have gone crawling to the other teachers just begging for help. Just thinking about it brought the girl into a small fit of laughter.

Just as the laughing had begun she could hear a small clear of the throat. Her blue eyes turned to face those of her grandmothers. Flashing an apologetic grin the new teacher slid down into her seat. At the moment she wanted to avoid speaking with anyone else. She was afraid she would mess up and say something to immature, and all the teacher would look down at her in disapproval. Hence her grandmother at the moment. Frowning at the thought of already having to be corrected she looked out at the tables. Students were already filling in. Seeing Alexander made the girl catch her breath. Her cheeks began to redden just a tad. Averting her eyes in another direction the blonde sighed. This was going to be one long year.

Needless to say, this dark haired males summer had been an interesting one. He had spent it with the Bates and well he could still sense the elder one had a grudge against him. As he entered the great hall he noticed that the older women was already looking in his direction sending him a slight glare. It made little sense to him, considering the fact that she was his head of house. I mean didn't it make sense to be nice to him? However he just let that slide and wandered over to the slytherin table. Taking a seat between the sixth and seventh years, he put his elbow on the table and let out a slow breath.

With that the darker haired male let out a frustrated sigh and allowed his eyes to wander up to the table. He noticed that Alyssa seemed to be laughing. Errr, Professor Bates, seemed to be laugh. Gosh this was going to be a tough. How was he supposed to call a former classmate of his by her last name? Plus adding Professor in front of it? Peeling his eyes away from the teachers table he turned to look at his fellow slytherin students. Seeing that Alexander was having a conversation with the 7th years, the 6th year decided it was best to not say anything.

The elder woman walked into the great hall with her held held high. Her grandaughter was of course next to her, but she didn't want to really be affiliated with the blonde at the moment. Truth be told, she didn't feel like she fit in here. She was by far the eldest professor and with all the incoming student aids that had just gradutaed this past year made the blonde even more uneasy. How had she been talked into being a professor for yet another year? And, most importantly, how had they convinced her to take position of the head of house.

After a moment or two of thinking about that she took her seat at the teachers table, and was of course being forced to sit next to Alyssa. Her blue eyes turned to those of her grandaughters and she let out a sigh. The girl was far to young to truly be a teacher. She knew that she was still a child at heart and had much to learn. The elder woman turned her head for just a minute, and at the moment she heard a few snickers coming from beside her. Clearing her throat she shot a glare to the younger version of herself and then let out a sigh. "Alyssa, hush up." She muttered, and soon enough the laughted subsided.

With a roll of her eyes Marget allowed herself to look around the great hall. Students were filing in. Catching sight of the young man she had just recently said good bye to the other day, after spending all summer with him. Why had she even agreed to taking him in? Alyssa had pushed and pushed, until Margret had finally given into the begging of her grand daughter. And well, now she was stuck replaying everything in her head from the summer. The male had been quiet, that was one thing. But he was a halfblood. That was what bugged her the most. A half blooded slytherin just did not go well with her, not at all.

Emily saw Alyssa and Margaret Bates walk in and smiled. She laughed at how pale and terrified Alyssa looked. Did she really think it was that terrifying? Emily thought back to her first year of teaching and shrugged. She guessed she had been terrified, but she had been assigned to teach domestic Charms, and she had been a year younger than Alyssa. Sure the girl had just come out of Hogwarts like she had, but still. Emily smiled warmly at the two as they sat down. She saw Alyssa laugh nervously, and heard Margret scold her granddaughter to watch it, but this just made Emily shake her head. She held a finger to Katherine and muttered "One sec." Before turning to Alyssa and Margret. "You know Margret, she has a right to be nervous. She's not acting childish, she's just terrified. I myself thought I was going to die when I started teaching the year I left Hogwarts." With that she turned to Alyssa and put a hand on her shoulder. "Sweetheart, I started a year before you are, and I lived. Sure I'm in big trouble with half the ministry of magic, but it's not like I asked to get straddled here. I'm still fighting though. We'll make it through together." She gave the girl a warm smile and hugged her tightly for a moment before going back to her supper.

For the first time this even the blonde girl began eating. At first she had been a bit to nervous to really do anything, and now all of that had subsided. Well at least for the most part. First wanting to quench her undeniable thirst she reached out for her glass that was filled with pumpkin juice taking a quick sip she set it back down on the table and noticed that Emily was speaking to her grandmother. She took a quick halt to what she was doing and listened carefully to what the elder girl had to say. A small grin arrived on Alyssa's face as she noticed that she was being defended. She was nervous, and now she noticed that her grandmother really had no right to get on her. This made Alyssa feel slightly better about everything. So maybe she hadn't done anything wrong just yet, that was a good thing. "Thank you Emily. Just hearing that makes me feel just a tad bit better. I needed some reassurance." Feeling the hug the blonde felt it only appropraite to hug her back. Breaking from the hug a few seconds later she went back to her own dinner and ate.

Margret was a bit taken aback when she noticed she was being spoken too. Turning her attention to the red headed younger girl, she did her best not roll her eyes. She wasn't trying to be mean, or show any dis respect. It was just a little hard when she was the oldest teacher here and everyone seemed to be ganging up on her. Then again, that sort of wasn't the right choice of words. Taking a quick sip of the drink in front of her she cleared her throat so she could speak. "I suppose I am in the wrong. I had figured the girl was not laughing out of nervousness. I was mistaken." She explained slowly. And what she had said was the truth. When Alyssa began speaking Margret went back to eating, doing her best to forget that the conversation had ever happened.

Seth kicked back, patting his finally satisfied stomach. "Now that was a meal, wasn't it, Esrath?" He laughed contentedly. Esrath cocked his head, confused. Seth hadn't actually laughed a normal laugh in a long time. He looked around at his fellow students. They were all noisily chattering with friends as the first-years gaped at the ceiling and the general decor of the place. The utter normalcy of the scene was comforting. For once there was not a single person in the massive crowd hunting him. Not a single person raised a wand to throw a curse at him. In fact, barring the rather surly group of Slytherins, everyone seemed genuinely glad to be at Hogwarts. Seth certainly was. He looked around, simply taking in the happy chaos that was Hogwarts. Esrath bundled himself into a coil on the table and rested his head on Seth's napkin.

Emily smiled and rubbed Alyssa's shoulder comfortingly. When she heard the bitterness in Margret's voice however, Emily dropped her head. "I didn't mean to sound like I was condemning you Margret. I just know how nerve racking it is to sit here. Especially for the first time." Emily left it at that. She wanted to state that she would gladly switch places with the woman. She would leave the Headmistress bit to Margret any day, and she would be perfectly content to just sit as a normal teacher. Instead however, she was sitting here, taking on the normal duties of the Headmistress, Deputy Headmistress, and Head of Ravenclaw. No wonder the Ministry was breathing down her back. She also really hadn't meant to offend the woman. She didn't know exactly what she had against Emily, but Emily guessed it was the same as Daniel, Atticus, and the Ministry. She was simply too young. A flash of anger flooded through her as she snatched her goblet up. What did she care? It wasn't like she had asked for this. She didn't deserve everyone hating her like this. She was desperately wishing she was in Atticus' position right now, just getting done with school so that she could teach like normal students had. What had Dasklin been thinking? Maybe he was getting back at her for blowing up all of those potions and giving him such a hard time.

When the boy didn't respond to Laura again, she quickly finished her meal and picked up her book again. It was the welcome back feast. If it hadn't been, she would have just simply gotten up and gone to her dorm, but with it being the welcome back feast she had to stay here until Professor Wixom dismissed them. Even more so since she was a prefect, and would have to help guide the new Ravenclaw's to Ravenclaw tower, and then to their specified dormitories. For now all she had to do was simply sit and wait. One reason she had her book. It wasn't like a lot of people talked to her.
