The sand sank beneath our feet--yours small
in comparison to mine,
my left being covered in the shooting star
you had drawn for me so many months
prior to this moment.
I clasped your hand with the force of Hurricane Katrina.
Was I destroying you?
The beach had cleared out save for a few stragglers and
countless hopeless romantics like myself
and you.
My fingers squeezed yours, silver eyes meeting your warm brown.
Your eyes were flecked with gold--oh my love you are golden--
in the waning sunlight. Charleston.
I'd come here wanting a new life for myself and ended up finding
a New Mexican belle, not Southern in the same respect as
those vast South Carolinian Plantations,
but exotic enough for my tired European eyes.
Two years prior I had met you, fresh into college, and became smitten
with your Free Hugs and smile.
Oh that smile How could anyone overlook it?
You were my star. Bigger than the sun. Solar.
I orbited around you.
When I dropped to one knee your eyes glazed over me,
thinking I was just being myself--that I was
just being Loki--I was a trickster. I am. I will be.
I smiled, a semi-crooked twist of my lips that I was still trying to perfect.
In all seriousness I asked you to be mine,
to marry me, reaching into my jacket pocket--the Northface one--
and producing a Kay's box.
Just hours before I had asked your ring size, playing with the garnet
on your thin finger. 6 you had told me. Much smaller than my 11.
It took you a few minutes to regain your speech when you realized
I was being serious (Sirius will guide you right?*)
and you stammered.
"Yes. Yes."
In that moment you became mine, pulled down onto the
russet sand, my lips pressed to your dark hair.
In that moment I knew that you were
what I'd been looking for all along.
*Sirius, the dog star, not the Harry Potter character >>;; I'm just a nerd.
This is based off of truth and my experience yesterday. After 2 1/2 years, I am engaged and planning a wedding. I feel so old! D;
