WWIII had come and gone in but a few hours. There had been a universal announcement transmitted on all radio and television stations. Everyone was aware of their impending destruction. Someone had launched an attack, so we retaliated. Within moments, all major countries had been targeted for attack. By the time anyone had realized what was happening, it was too late. People around the world were rushed to underground shelters, safe from the explosion and resulting fallout, but there wasn't enough time. Many were saved, but not enough. The shelters began to fill, and time began to run short. With about an hour left before impact, the shelters began to close to seal out the coming doom. The remainder of the people were forced to watch as the missiles drew closer. Some ran, some said their last prayers. Some blocked it out and continued with their lives. Most just stared up at the sky, watching their death approach, all thought gone from their minds. It wasn't long before it was all gone. The cities, the forests, the everything. Nothing was left as they hit, their blasts consuming everything. Even underground, they could feel the world shudder from the devastating blow.
Hundreds of years later, the environment has recovered and nature has come back to take its place. The world is green once more. The people were no longer confined to the shelters they had lived in for so long. Humanity was again emerging. However, while the world was once again safe, life is far from how they remembered it.
Some people had not been sheltered, but they managed to cheat death anyway. They have been exposed to the radiation in the atmosphere and have had their genes altered by mutations. Most of these mutations had been fatal, but some had been beneficial. Many who were affected can no longer be called human. These people know their way around the land and have no problem with how the world is now. They can make good companions and guides, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they want to be. It doesn't mean that they will be entirely trustworthy, either.
