I'll get straight to it: I love fantasy-based roleplays. They can be as typical as a classic dungeon crawler, as epic as Lord of the Rings, as nerdy as a Dungeons and Dragons session, or as off-beat as the works of Studio Ghibli, but I slavishly devote myself to any and all of them.
Now, I've had some ideas floating around my head, and I'm considering buckling down and creating some kind of roleplay, but I want to know if the interest is there first before I put a whole lot of time and effort into something. And with the guild being occasionally dead, I'm never too certain about things like this.
So!
If you're at all interested, what's your favorite style of fantasy? What can a fantasy roleplay not be without, in your opinion? I not only want to construct something awesome, I want to get discussions started because I'm an instigator like that. In the meantime, I'll offer up some thoughts and ideas of things I'd be willing to experiment with!
Medieval Fantasy Ahh, the old staple of the roleplaying genre, and one that's unfortunately been beaten to death so hard that when I first joined Gaia (in the forgotten year of 2003) there were at least ten threads on every page with "A band of adventurers meet in a tavern..." as the subject header. Medieval fantasy can be interesting, and there are tons of things to mix it up with, but again, the effort must be there.
Modern Fantasy Think of Mr. Neil Gaiman, and his gods ordering burgers at a fast-food joint. Or Hayao Miyazaki, and his iron miners fighting with enchanted animals for control of a forest. Or J.K. Rowling, and her evil wizards attacking modern London. There's nothing quite as juxtaposed as technology and magic, but that's what makes this offshoot of fantasy so interesting. A little more easy to work with than medieval fantasy, but still lots of fun.
Dungeons and Dragons I'm a nerd, I admit it. But the best D&D campaigns I were in focused on storytelling instead of leveling or "your fighter hits the orc for 2 damage" nonsense. Online, this would require a lot of effort from people, but it can also be fantastically entertaining (I made a funny!), and I'd be willing to run a campaign if people are honestly interested.
Insert Adjective Here Fantasy I love making stuff up. If people who are interested favor a particular brand of roleplaying (say, for sake of example, something with zombies), let me know, and we'll go for it! Zombie fantasy! Now doesn't that sound slightly awkward. But the best part about the fantasy genre is that it can literally be stuck together with anything else and still work awesomely.
I'd love to hear what people around this place are interested in, so step right up and have your say!

Ooooh~
What about a necromancer fantasy where zombies are your allies instead of enemies? It would be sort of like a twisted fantasy where everyone uses zombies for work and its a taboo to summon angels?
Just a thought :3

Oooh, that's an awesome idea! Definitely keep it in mind, and I'll see if we can't put it into practice!

Yeah, it's a real shame it gets so quiet here and there... it's funny that at the time I'm trying to be more active in the guild, everything seems to die down.

I am personally a fan of medieval fantasy. I absolutely love the whole era, the idea the technology doesn't even exist in the sense we have come to be used to is extremely amusing to me. I always love ones that either have set races one might encounter/choose from or have nothing more than true medieval times. I was in a role play that hadn't a bit of 'magic' in it at all, it was like living in real medieval times. I have to say it was one of my favourite role plays and I would absolutely adore something like that again. Then again, I'm a fantasy lover so I can almost guarantee that anything you decide to go with I will likely be joining.
Also a big fan of role plays that make up their own lands and such, it leaves a great deal for the role players to add as far as lore and such go. Just a couple basic suggestions/mutterings.

@ Harlequin:: Ooh, neat perspective you're bringing here! I've always been a fan of roleplays simply set in another era without any whistles or bells, but I think you and I are in the minority when it comes to that. Hi-five? It's something I'm absolutely willing to consider, though, because I love the idea so much. I think it gives people a nice challenge, too.
And I pretty much insist on making up my own lands/races/kingdoms/mythology/etc. for any roleplays. It's way more fun exploring places you've never been to before.
Now you've guys got me thinking!

I'm up for anything. As far as new ideas, I can't contribute much at the moment. But I'd be willing to participate in any of the things people listed in this thread. Fantasy roleplays are my favorite, too.

Haha, so glad there are others like me! Not sure if that's a good thing for everyone else, but meh! ^_^
If you want any help with anything, you just let me know. I'm also pretty much guaranteed to join whatever you create at this point. XD
And I'm sort of split. While I do love making up my own lore/races/places and such for a role play I also have a lot of fun doing the research for a role play that I may not otherwise be familiar with. Like I played a drow before, and I wasn't entirely sure what myths surrounded the drow. I found a TON of information and ended up piecing together my own history and such. Mind you, the sad part was having put in all of this effort just to have the thing die within a month. I'm potentially thinking about making a role play out of it....but I'd have to do some figuring.
But I've also done role plays where I had no idea about the era so I had to go and look it up. I love learning about new cultures so it's always fun for me. Then again, I love writing so making up my own stuff is fun too. ^_^ I'm pretty eclectic in my role playing, as I am with most things in my life.

@ Sarnath:: Good to know! And yay, fantasy is my favorite too.
@ Harlequin:: Thanks for the offer! I might take you up on it. I know what you mean about the research too - I love learning things surrounding cultures and beliefs or fantasy races or really everything.
And that's why I've been so hesitant to start - all of the roleplays I create tend to die. XD
But since there seems to be a lot of interest, I'm going to start working on putting something together! I have enough free time that it shouldn't be a hassle~
