Winners of the week of January 17 2010Yum Cimil Mayan The death god was called Yum Cimil. He also could be called Ah Puch, the god of the Underworld. His body is predominantly skeletal. His adornments are likewise made of bones. Yum Cimil has also been represented with a body covered with black spots (decomposition). He also wears a collar with eyeless sockets. This adornment was the typical symbol for the Underworld. Oya Yoruba She is seen in aspects of warrior-goddess of wind, lightning, fertility, fire, and magic. She creates hurricanes and tornadoes and guards the underworld. Goddess of tornadoes, (which are said to be her whirling skirts as she dances), lighting (the power of which she acquired from her husband, Shango) earthquakes, and any kind of destruction. Beyond destruction, Oya is the goddess of change, transition, and the chaos that often brings it about. Her association with the marketplace, and more specifically with the gates of cemeteries (as opposed to the entire underworld), reveals her in her aspect as facilitator of transition.

I really want to learn sanskrit, I know a bit already, but not nearly enough to satisfy me. If you want, I'll find and post a link to the hindu story about Kali Ma and Shiva that explains why she is normally depicted with one foot on Shiva's chest. Interestingly enough, that same story also explains why she is often depicted sticking her tongue out too.

There are quite a few with multiple arms, actually. Her and Shiva both do, I can't remember who else does but I know there is at least one other like that.
And I didn't bookmark the page where I was reading the full story about Shiva and Kali Ma the other day. >_< Give me a minute to find it, and I'll start a new thread so we can all share our favorite stories without clogging up Kasa's deities of the week thread xd
