The thing about debates is they quickly get ugly, especially online where you can't see the other person's face or gauge their reactions. I would like all of you linguists to keep your debates healthy and intelligent. Please bring an argument to the table instead of making a broad statement and saying nothing more. For example, don't say: "I think gay marriage is dumb!" say "I think gay marriage is a bad thing because of X reason". Do not insult your fellow members personally. For example, you are allowed to say "I think this statement is silly" but not "you are an idiot".
Also, just because this is called Debate Club doesn't necessarily mean everything here has to be a debate. Just anything that might cause a debate goes here. This includes discussions about religion, some about sex, politics, things of that nature. For the most part this will be a pretty civil board.
You can be penalised for things here just like any other forum. Don't think because it's a debate forum you can get away with murder. I trust you guys will treat each other civilly but if you don't, this forum will be taken down.
Now, have at each other's throats! scream
