First time I heard indie music was on some youtube video where the credits had a Robbers on High Street song, and then I wanted to find other indie bands.

So, how did you get into indie music?

Well throughout High School I was the big Classic Rock fiend. In my forth year I heard a song by Yeah Yeah Yeahs but it wasn't until the next summer until I really got into listening indie bands.

How... how.
I was a fan of mainstream alternative in early high school. (I liked Incubus. sweatdrop ) I began listening to my local alternative radio station's exploratory program "Edge of the X."

That's what led me to realize that there was an abundance of musical experiences to be had.
I eventually discovered the joys of public radio (much love to 91.3 WYEP) and then, the internet.

Around 2003, the bands I began to enjoy were slightly more "underground" than they are today.

I listened to the likes of Ok Go, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab, Blonde Redhead.

And my obsession has continued...

Umm.. probably around the age of 11. I was big into Hip-Hop (still am, just more so back then), and I ran across Immortal Technique, and I thought it was cool the effort he had put into doing his own independent thing, and I've been listening to independent bands/artists ever since.

i started around my freshman year of highschool i guess or during eigth grade because my sister started listening to bands like eisley when they were still local in tyler texas and from there she just explored my horizons and forbade me to listen to mainstream music lol basically and after that i listened to our local college radio station KTCU and from there all i heard was college rock and indie bands thus started my lust for good music. mrgreen

I just have always liked underground music because the radio gets old and ever since the 90's it's been dominanted by crap. I just like a very wide range of expiremental music and anything that sounds good really. If you want to split hairs though I listen to more old music than indie music.

I have no idea. I've always kept my ears open for something different. My dad was really into The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band which I loved as a kid. Okay, so they're not indie, but they have that aesthetic. And I was a big fan of my Nana's music which mostly consisted of Scottish folk songs and The Andrews Sisters.

Then when I was about 12 I went through a Siouxsie-inspired New Wave thing and discovered "real" indie music like The Smiths and Guided by Voices. I basically just went online and found all my music that way. So, as you can see, my tastes haven't changed much. I still like all the same stuff as when I was 8.

I just really hated the mainstream music, was looking for something new, listened to my cousin's iPod. I found the wonder that is MGMT and got a Pandora Radio account.

I used to listen to the radio a lot since when I was 12 and listened to a station that played The Smiths almost all day.
And when I was 14 I started listening to music a friend passed me that was mostly Modest Mouse, Moldy Peaches, Neutral Milk Hotel, stuff like that.
But I didn't really know much about or listened to much music until about 2 years ago, when I moved to France, had my own computer with internet and for once could learn as much as I wanted about it. So that's pretty much what I've been doing ever since.
I just wish I had gotten so into music earlier and had learned to play some instrument to be able to study music in college...

For a long time I was a big classic rock dork, and I'd almost exclusively listen to 60s/70s music for whatever reason... and then I heard the White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand. So I reconciled my differences with modern music...

There is a big underground music scene here, and first things I've heard were Pavement covers, Guided by Voices covers, and stuff like that.

even though i'm definitely more into punk than indie, i've been listening to both since.. dang.. since i was about 11. before i even had the internet (1996!).
i was HUGE nerd when i was young, and i hung out pretty much at the library around the corner from my house by myself, reading comics and science books. one day, i saw a bunch of older "weird" kids smoking and reading what i would soon learn were zines. they looked enough like comics for me to be interested, so i went and bugged the hell out of them. they were super nice about me pestering them, probably because they felt sorry for me, and hinted at some bands i should check out (bikini kill, operation ivy, beat happening). "and the rest is history". at 12 i dyed my hair blue. at 13 i had my first mohawk. at 14 i was getting home made tattoos and taking the bus to see pretty much any band that came into LA. once my friends got cars, i was all over the ******** place. i remember when i was 17, there were a couple of times i didn't go home for about a week because there were so many shows and parties (i drove my parents insane, ha).

i still go out and s**t, but i'm not one of those creeps trying to reclaim their glory days. "high class punk", i guess. haha.
