Updated information from serebii.net, and once again spoilers are contained herein so you are warned:

Regarding pokeassists: They are confirmed in their reappearance, but the big difference now is the pokemon selected for the pokeassist now joins the player on the battlescreen. It is not yet known as how, but the player does have the ability to control the pokemon that is using the pokeassist.

There is a downside to this method and it is that the pokeassist pokemon are vulnerable to the attack of the pokemon they're trying to help capture, and if they are damaged they'll run away.

Regarding Ranger Signs: These are special signs you can draw in the ground with your capture styler on the Touch Screen. There are numerous signs in the game and when used, summon certain pokemon to assist you in the game.

It is currenly unknown whether or not the pokemon will join you in the adventure as a result of Ranger Signs.

Regarding Wi-Fi events: The current event known is for the mysterious Deoxys event that you must challenge in all four forms before you can capture it, and which then can be transferred to any of your D/P/P/HG/SS games. Greater details are unknown as of yet.

And now my own comments: I've enjoyed the previous two games in the Ranger series. The first game was oversimplified but then again, it was like Red and Blue in compairson to today's games--just starting out. Shadows of Alima was a very engaging game and I've replayed it several times since.

The best thing about the games was, of course, the rare pokemon you can get from them to transfer to your current fourth-gen game...just once each! Both of my Manaphy (and the resulting Phione), one of my two Darkrai, and a special Rilou I have are thanks to those games.

The Deoxys might be worth it on this one. Be nice to have one unhacked in my personal case...

The newest information on Pokemon Ranger: Tracks of Light, straight from serebii.net--

In multiplayer mode, you and the people you are playing with all challenge pokemon simultaneously and are able to send out numerous pokeassists at once to allow for quicker capture.

The official website for ToL unveiled several minutes of footage in a trailer, part of which showed the player chasing a Manaphy underwater. Due to the previous Ranger game installments all containing a pokemon egg that you could transfer to fourth-gen games, it is a possibility that this game also will grant you a Manaphy egg as well. It is only a possibility. Such an action has not yet been confirmed.

I've normally not commented too much on the TV show outside of its subforum but as this has to do with the game, here goes, again from serebii.net:

A new Anime special is set to be aired on February Fourteenth. It is not currently known what the episode is about but a new aspect of the show is to be called Pokemon Ranger Corner, and will very likely bring new details to the upcoming Pokemon Ranger game.

I'll keep an eye out for more details.

Okay, latest information from serebii.net:

The Shaymin from the last Special Mission is also transferrable to the fourth-gen games, making it possible to obtain all four pokemon from them.

In the Deoxys mission, only the leader is able to obtain the Deoxys. Friends can jump in with their own games and help, but only the leader can capture it for his game.

The presence of Latios or Latias in the games depends on your character's gender. Male brings you Latios. Female brings you Latias.

You may encounter Celebi which will take you into the past to clear certain Missions. Doing so will open up new areas in the relative future and is necessary to get past certain obstacles.

You may find certain lithographs on your adventure. Finding them will increase the amount of pokemon you can carry with you and gives you the ability to raise your pokemon.
