Looking Back...
As I look back, remember the joy, the laughter and excitement. I remember... 2009. Now, in 2010, I look ahead... a year, closer to 2012... so I try to enjoy every bit of 2010, so it would be just like '09, but better...

March 12, 2009. That day... the rest of the year makes no sense to me, even in hindsight, but I can't leave this memory behind as I rush face-first into 2010. T, the girl I used to think I couldn't go a week without, picked me up and set me down again (she calls it a hug; I call it a criminal offense), teasing me about my frame as usual. I don't remember if I saw her gravitational smile, clean and bright like a cherry blossom. Later, I comforted myself thinking she'd printed it on my shoulder. We might have shaken hands then, I don't know. Everything was over in the next minute. Customs, metal detectors, the unavoidable trudging, all too fast and too easy, and I knew it would hit me soon.
As it took my seat by the window, my seatbelt fell* heavy over my abdomen. Lift-off, the Earth falling away from us as we hovered in the mist, two children in front of me laughing, a cruel contrast to the feeling settling over me with each foot of ascension. Despair, as sticky as a spider's web, and untouchable as a shadow.
March 12, 2009. I stood in Seoul, South Korea unable to believe a day had passed as I cried in the bulging darkness, listening to the machine hover over the world. It feels right that every clock in the city knows it's still Thursday. At least the time zones can stay on my good side. My mind cracks, and I can see T twirling in the street singing, "Hello Korea!" I smile, picturing her as she is at the moment, dreaming similar dreams. Then I stop smiling, because I'm a stanger in a strange land with a strange face and a strange voice.
2010 was my only hope that day. And maybe, as I squint in the face of my own future, it still is (optimistic, am I?).
