The way i learned how to doll, is that you start with a base color, you brush on lights and darks and smooth if needed. but recently i've been dabling in pixel by pixel shading, and let me tell you, trying to figure it out is hard!!
I must be a simpleton lol. any tips for beginners?

I figured out how to make decent dolls with the pixel-by-pixel method. xD
What I do is:
Outline the object(hairstyle, clothes, etc.) with the darkest color on your pallette. I work with a five-tone pallette for hair, then four-tone for everything else. Fill in the shape with the second lightest(hair) or lightest(clothes). Take the second darkest to begin adding some shadow, consider the lightsource. Take the third darkest to add to that to make it seem more smooth. If you were working with clothes, you're done. If you're working hair, use the lighest tone to add some highlights, like the typical swoosh across the bangs (like the pink-haired girl on the gaia banner) or to add emphasis where you see fit. That should do it. If you need help beyond there, I'd be glad to help you out with image samples via AIM, YIM, or MSN. 3nodding

All my life I've only had MS Paint for computer drawing.
I usually have a palette of 5 colors.
When I say this, the first color is the darkest and the last is the lightest.
First, I use my darkest color to outline. Then I use the fourth color as a base.
THEN I use the second color to make the darkest shadows. Most people start with the lighter shadows, but I don't.
I use the third color to add the lighter shadows. The darker shadows usually take up little space compared to the lighter shadows.
Then I use my last color to make things look shiny-ish. I hate dull colors. D:
And for hair, I sometimes use my second and third colors as the outlines for individual strands within the base. If you understand... /:
