Since the winter brings chilly nights and cold feet, I was thinking about knitting some socks for the family. What kinds of yarn and needles can I use to knit soft socks that are both durable and warm.

Also, do you have any patterns you recommend for socks?

Thanks! smile

Oh poo! I totally forgot I made slipper socks on knifty knitters.. D:
xD
oh well, if you're using KK's use Lion Brand Thick&Quick, it makes pretty nice slipper socks! I've never made them on regular needles.. at least not yet. I'm sure any wool sock yarn would work nicely! ^^

For house socks I use worsted weight yarn and size six needles to produce a thick, warm fabric. You can find a generic sock pattern here, you use any weight yarn and any size needle, though I suggest looking up other ways to do the toe; I learned on this sock pattern, but find the toe in Design Your Own Knits in Five Easy Steps to be much easier (I can't remember who wrote that book offhand though >_<). The ones I made were just in acrylic, perfect for winters where I am but you might want to use a different fiber depending on where you are. Hope that helps you out.

I've been using Schoppel-Woole's Zauberball for socks. It's a bit more expensive at 20 USD per ball, and it's very fine sock/lace yarn, but it's warm and the color is gorgeous. Plus you can get a pair of knee highs from one ball. I used streetsandyo's knee high pattern -- which is pretty basic toe-up socks, knit on size 1 needles, but I wouldn't recommend switching to a size 6 for the ribbing unless there's something I'm missing in the pattern, because the stitches got way too big for holding up the socks. sweatdrop
