does this Wi-Fi work on all the DS? Or do you need to get some kind of upgrade, or is there a particular game that you need to get that will activate it?

Well, you either need the game which has the WiFi set-up program on it (any WiFi enabled game has it) or someone who alredy has a WiFi enabled game can send you the WiFi setup program through the DS Download feature, so you can set it up without owning a game.

All DS's have it. But you need a Wi-Fi game to be able to get to the menu on the DS. It is a kind of hidden piece of software on the DS that can only be accessed by going though a Wi-Fi game.
