Now this is more like it. This is the Sanctuary I miss from last season. Let me show you what I mean.
First off, I was pleasantly surprised to see no trace of the multi-screen editing in this episode. It was straightforward, unadulterated cinematography this week, and was I ever glad for it. As I've said in reviews past, the technique can get very annoying when applied improperly and most of the time that's exactly what the editors were doing this season. Perhaps they read reviews from the fans like these. Who can say? All I know is I'm thankful and I think somebody up there likes me, "up there" meaning either in the heavens or in the editing offices, which are probably far north of my family home.
The plot of this episode was also pretty enjoyable. Not as involved as some in the past, but I had fun following the logic behind solving the problem. I have but one question that it raised: How long had Tesla's plan to do this been in place? Obviously long enough for him to hide his failsafe weapon in the Sanctuary (and in a vessel it couldn't have fit through, might I add. They had to smash the wine bottle to get the device out). I also have to wonder why it is they'd assume that first, all vampires are exceedingly cocky (though it makes sense if they suddenly find themselves invincible) and why on Earth it is assumed that all female vampires have to wave their sexuality around to everybody. Girls can be cocky without constantly thinking about...yeah...
And now for the acting. As always, we got a great performance out of Jonathan Young as our favorite "scenery vampire" Nikola Tesla. He was believable (and amusing) in his truths and in his ruses. I half expected him to do something horrible to Will and Kate when he had them and Helen tied up in that back room. Not Helen, though. His pervy comment about her being tied up was the cherry on top of the long history of banter they have and he wouldn't want to end that after a century. Tesla aside, though, the other vampires in this episode seemed a wee bit over the top. Granted, they were adolescent vampires (cue massive shudder), but there's still a line. There's also a line when it comes to the portrayal of high-class college kids. I doubt that many of them meet the stereotype that much.
So that just about wraps it up for this week, save one detail. I really did love that ending scene. While I'm sad we won't be seeing Tesla suck the scenery's blood anymore, he and his new magnet powers can still chew the hell out of it. Interesting twist, Bridge Studios Crew. I was blindsided and I'm happy about it.
