MSA (Modern Standard Arabic)

MSA is also known as Koranic Arabic or Fusḥa (ــحــى‎‎ـصـ‎فـ). It is the language that is used in newspapers and official documents and is quite different from the colloquial Arabic dialects spoken from region to region. For now I will just be working on MSA because, although most people don't speak MSA, it is a good base from which to gain a knowledge of any dialect and most Arabic speakers will understand MSA even if they speak a dialect. I am not going to get into the history of Arabic a whole lot, or the culture of the Arabic-speaking populace. If any helpers want to put up small mini-lessons on those types of topics, they are welcome to it. I don't have a problem with people besides me answering questions either.

Just a note - To keep this thread from being cluttered I'm uploading my Arabic lessons and materials onto an online document viewing website and I will provide links to the lessons here. I'm going to try and use materials I've prepared myself and then within the lesson you will find helpful links located where I feel they can do the most good. If you ever have any problem accessing the lessons or links, please let me know right away.

Writing in Arabic script.
If you're like me and can't write Arabic in your word processor, I found this free program that works all right for it. It's by no means the best but at least it gets the job done. I generally tend to cut and paste from the Arabic text editor into word documents. Here is the link to where I downloaded it in case anyone else wants to as well. If you find a program that works better than this one, please let me know so I can try it out.

Just a note: Just got done dealing with hubby's relatives for the past week so I'm a bit drained. Sorry I'm such a lazy-bones everyone.

Arabic Handwriting (The previous reading and writing section didn't have much actual information about "writing". I'm now making it into it's own section and am including examples of handwriting in it along with a few tips about writing.)-
Just need to scan it into a pdf and upload it to the net. Will be up soon.
Edit: Yeah... my hubby screwed this up for me before but now that my temper is cooler I'm going to try and redo this pretty soon and get it up.

Intro to Verbs -
Haven't decided how to divide up the topic of verbs yet.

Making negative statements -
Will be added eventually (It seems like it would be easier to talk about this after introducing some stuff about verbs so I'm going to wait on it. Might break it up and put part of it sooner though.)

How to say "I will go." -
Will be added eventually (after I get the basic verb conjugation stuff up)

Verbal and Nominal Sentences -
Will be added eventually (not sure how to break this topic up)

Useful Links for Learning Arabic

Writing the Arabic Alphabet - http://www.stanford.edu/dept/lc/arabic/alphabet/alphabet.html Unfortunately I couldn't get the quick-time videos on this site to work right for me. I had to click through the black on the bottom to see them bit by bit. The person writing has very good and proper handwriting though so it's a great example if you want to start practicing the letters.

Arabic Phrases - http://www.linguanaut.com/english_arabic.htm The list is a bit long but it has a lot of useful phrases in Arabic. It also has transliterations beside the Arabic script for those who are still struggling with the alphabet. You can find links to videos of people saying some common phrases as well. Very useful for a beginner.

Links Found Within Lessons
The Alphabet Sounds Taught by a Native - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANIoxAxruys&feature=player_embedded They did a great job explaining how each letter sounds. It’s one of the best audio-visual presentations I have seen.

Arabic Alphabet Song - http://www.funwitharabic.com/song.htm This song starts with an adult singing it and his pronunciation is spot on. It also shows how some of the letters connect to make basic words and it has some links to some other basic information similar to what I have here. The only problem is that in some of the repetitions of the alphabet the letters don’t always keep in time with what they’re saying.

Arabic Alphabet Song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AsgDINA6GI It’s hard to get the pronunciation from this exactly cause it’s kids singing but it’s cute.

Cardinal Numbers - http://www2.ignatius.edu/faculty/turner/arabic/anumbers.htm This is a link to a site where you can hear the pronunciation of the cardinal numbers. Just be aware that it is only 1-10. They did not put the correct audio for the zero.

My Arabic Book Recommendations
Standard Arabic An Elementary - Intermediate Course by Eckehard Schulz, Gunther Krahl, and Wolfgang Reuschel - This book is really great and it's easy enough for a beginner to understand. It gives good explanations but if a beginner tries to read it too fast they might get a brain overload. There's a lot of information crammed in the pages of this book. It's really great if you know Arabic and just want a review.

The Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic edited by J.M. Cowan - Usually referred to by Arabic students as the Hans Wehr. This is THE dictionary to have. It's difficult to use at first, because words must be found by looking up the root, but once you become accustomed to it, you will find it much more useful than the average Arabic dictionary. You gain a much better knowledge of the relationship between different word forms if you use the Hans Wehr instead of the usual dictionary.

Extra and Mini-Lesson Links

If anyone has any mini-lessons posted here in the thread or elsewhere, send me the link and I will put it here. I will probably put up a link to a mini-lesson/notes about Syrian net-speak in here a bit later as well. I took a few notes when a Syrian friend was teaching me about it way back and I want to share them in case anyone is interested. I just have to type them up first.

So where it says "Main Lesson Links", that is where the lessons are?

Yup, that's the main lessons, though you can find some other helpful stuff in the other sections. Let me know if I wasn't clear enough anywhere or if you think there's a certain type of lesson I should put up next. It's my first time trying to teach Arabic to others so I might not be very well organized at first.
