Wow, I'm surprised at my reaction to this week's episode. I half saw the ending coming, but I still teared up.
Let's start from the beginning. Finally I see good use of that irksome editing style they've thrown into season two. Watching everybody with the walkie-talkies was just such a good moment, plus the shot of James (Michael Shanks, or Daniel Jackson of Stargate SG-1) taking a drink put next to the Duke doing the same thing. It's moments like that where this editing style makes sense, not all those multiple-angle things they keep using it for in this series. It's one thing to be innovative and another to just think that's what you're doing.
So, about this week's guest star, the marsupial man. I haven't really seen Michael in anything but Stargate, so every time I see him act I see a little bit of our old friend Dr. Jackson in there. The holdover was minimal this time, but there seems to be a range Michael has for believable acting. If he goes any way outside that range I just can't believe his performance. He stayed pretty well within it in this episode despite having a different backstory. He just kept that old nice-guy air about him and had a series of reactions I've seen him have a million times before. At least I could feel along with his character. Also, speaking of SG-1 holdovers, is it just me, or was that the Goa'uld memory probe device they put on the Duke?
I'll be honest: As soon as Kate said James looked familiar I knew what was on the way. I also knew that Kate, being the good person she's slowly morphing into, wouldn't shoot him. After that I could see two possible outcomes and yes, the actual ending was one of them. As I've said in past reviews, I'm particularly jaded when it comes to TV plots, or fictional plots in general. I can see many potential outcomes from a particular point when I'm watching a show like Sanctuary (especially since I know the work of many of its writers). I've gotten so good at it that I can usually tell how an episode is going to wrap up. I'm pretty sure they only blind-sided me once, and that was in season 1. Still, even though I had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen, it still got me where it counted and I give the writer, actors and everybody else credit for that.
