So, I was just wondering if I'm the only weirdo that will think of specific moments in the character's life that aren't even important, like driving in a car at random, them shopping for groceries or them vacuuming. Then I also wondered how do other people here make up their characters.
I do have a lot of different ways I make a character. First there is the spark. It can be anything; a song, a picture, a thought--anything. It gets my gears turning. I try, then, to flesh out ideas, then, randomly, I'll think of them in my mind. For example, I take the subway to school. I have been thinking of a new character of mine down in the subway and let my mind wander from there to other things he does.
From that point if they grow on me I'll think of things they like to do, mannerisms, small details, then I'll go and find a picture.
Usually my last thing I do is give them a name because I'm really picky. Lately I've been avoiding names with the letter M in it, especially at the beginning, because my laptop has a faulty M key. lol
So, anyone else? XD

for a lot of role-plays, I come up with my character on the fly. It starts off, pure and simple, what is needed for that rp. It's a vampire rp, toss together a vampire, you know? From story to story... very few of the characters carry over these days, and since I've had painfully brief rps lately, I haven't got much attached to them.
But there are a few I can't let go of. My stock characters either stay with me because I've been them so much for so long that they're a permanent feature, or else they have such a big part of me in them, or... I fall in love with the idea behind them. these are my archetypes and... I have some good diversity, and good development for them. For instance, when I play Fullmetal Alchemist, I play Dante- but I've played her so often that she's kind of drifted apart from the show and became her own archetype; every time I play a mafia boss, or an information broker, or an evil overlord... it's almost always based on her.
it's hard to say if tvtropes.org has poisoned this or improved it. as far as archetypes go, they know everything, but it's all.... well, go look for yourself. just search for 'villain' and start clicking.
Also, I shamelessly steal characters from shows and such to make cameos. I have a whole collection of NPC's that'll appear at the most random places. Isaac and Miria will never be let go of: any time someone needs cheering up, or if there's mention of cat burglars, they come out of nowhere. I try hard to do the characters justice, of course, but mostly I love using them as a reference.

@Leid: I do the same thing! I took acting in high school, and text-based roleplaying is a lot like acting. You create the setting, plot and characters and you have an audience (which, in a RP's case is the other roleplayer(s) in your group). Creating a character for a play is almost exactly the same. ^_^ Thinking up little details like how they walk and how they drive, etc. gives the character more depth and you get to know the character more. Which is good, because you have to play that character. xD
I like making up OCs for fandoms (although the only real ones I have so far are my Sonic OC and my Pokemon OC) or I'll just make any character for any general genre that I'll edit and fix up to fit in any particular roleplay. Most of my characters are fantasy anyway xD I have like, elves and a fairy and such.
I like names starting with V, X and Z. Those letters are just so underused and underappreciated (like Luigi from Super Mario Bros). I also like names ending in "lune" (ex. Auralune, Annalune, Verilune).
And of course, I always draw my characters. <3

Generally on Gaia I am prone to creating situationally based characters which have little replay value. That is not to say that I don't love each and every one of them, they were just made for a purpose and once served they go bye bye.
However, the first character I made for an RP has stuck with me so long and has been used so much that I can scarcely separate his attitude and mannerisms from my own. Being that I made him my freshman year of high school I think that creating him had a vast affect on my development. His name is, and ooooh big shocker lol, Asialk.
There are others that have stuck with me as well a few of them becoming somewhat archetypal themselves but none have risen to the same heights. I mean I have his whole life mapped out in my head, literally birth to death.
Aside from that in character creation I try to stay away from most of the attributes that have already been used for characters unless I am just dead-set on being a certain way, and by the second post I write with a character I will have most of their major qualities mapped out. But I tend to keep it to that level these days. There is only room enough for so many people in one's mind. XD
