First bit of info: What is RYM.

Rym is populated by a fractioned and surreal diversity of human, demihuman, and anthropomorphic beings. Some have come to Rym from other planes shattered by the world-devouring Eater, while others have risen from the ashes of the Creator Empire or followed in the wake of the Spiral Order's expansion. Some are peaceful and kind, others vile and hateful, but they all generally share a single goal. They must survive. Good and evil alike have a common enemy, which has changed the entire nature of the balance, and smashed their petty struggles under a seemingly unstoppable tide of conquest and ecocide.

Part 2 of the RYM intro.
The species

Rym's human population has always viewed other races with suspicion and veiled hostility, though they have a slightly higher tollerance of the demi-human population, such as the elves and dwarves, and will trade with them should the need arise. Non-humans are often termed 'monsters', for lack of a more enlightened word, and relations with them are awkward at best. Most of the human culture is a fragmented creole containing a general common dialect supplemented by regional variations and accents, and they often have enough trouble getting along with each other let alone with those of completely foreign appearance. Both the Spiral and the effects of the Wasting heavily influence human societies, especially in the southern regions of Penduk, and most will offer little resistance to the overpowering presence of the undead.

Skoles tend to be fairly serious creatures, bound by strong codes of personal and tribal honor. They respect courage and strength, demonstrating high degrees of both. The lupines once dominated all of Haun, but have since been scattered across the nothern plains by their nemesis, the czath. The remaining tribes are nomadic and reclusive, and with each passing year they lose more of their territorial range to the czath and Spiral encroachment. They have a deep-seated hatred of the czath, as well as their gorg sponsors, and have a rather dim view of any who would share their company. They get along reasonably well with other tribal cultures, although they maintain a fairly high opinion of themselves and can be patronizing to those with less strength and skill at arms then themselves. They are also very suspicious of magic, both baneful and beneficial, and are loath to associate with those who use it excessively.

The hoomiku are a relatively new addition to Rym's populus. When they first crashed on Axis some six centuries ago, they were absolutely paranoid about any sort of contact with the local 'savages', though over the years this attitude dwindled. While they still seek to avoid contact with most other races, they have ventured from beyond their wrecked colony ship to establish themselves in remote locations across the face of Rym, studying their bizarre sciences and monitoring the rest of the world through telescopes and other forms of covert observation. Their intellectual natures isolate them even when they do come into contact with other species, and they are always shy and reserved in the presence of those not of their kind.

The lutrai tend to be very friendly and helpful, even when the feeling isn't mutual. They will often try to spread their friendly outlook and good-humor around, and are quite open to new ideas. They derive no joy from hostility. Lutrai share a strong bond with the reptillian koba, and their tribes often share a common territory. In some cases, these two species have influenced each other culturally, and even certain important ceremonies are shared. The koba enjoy the honest, playful nature of the otter-folk, and the lutrai in turn seem to delight in their ability to amuse and entertain the simple-minded reptillians. Most lutrai have a hard time bearing grudges, and tend to happily accept anyone, of any species, should they feel their heart is in the right place.

The czath are perhaps the least pleasant of all Rym's inhabitants, with the possible exception of the Spiral. This brutish warrior race has made enemies with nearly every other species, and for good reason. They are canibalistic, bullying, rude, and must force themselves on females of other species in order to procreate. The czath have a particular hatred of the skoles, and their kind have been locked in a territorial battle for generations. By contrast, the one other people they actually get along with are the gorgs, who happily exploit the reptillians' awsil addiction. As the Spiral no longer supply the drug for free, they are forced to deal with the gorgs, and they know that if relations ever break down, there will be no more awsil available. For this reason, they adopt an air of fawning adoration in the presence of their suppliers.

The cepn have apathy down to an art form. Their morbid, nihilistic nature often denies them any strong emotional commitment with regards to other races. They barely even like each other, let alone those who do not share their grim outlook. Cepn are by no means emotionless - they are merely taught to regard any being not of their beliefs as 'unenlightened'. They see open warfare and hatred as childish and barbaric, favoring subtle manipulation and assassination to solve their conflicts. They are generally feared and detested by other races. Most of the cepn serve the Decider, sharing the domain of her island kingdom, and thus they are quite rarely seen outside of the Tamaran Empire, and a fair portion of their society has become addicted to the black dust, chith, which dulls emotion and feeling.

The gorgs pretend to like everybody. This charismatic facade is, of course, just a tool of their trade. Gorgs will exploit anyone, though for them its never really personal, just business. If they're ever fond of anyone, it's because they're easy to take advantage of and not much competetion. This is evident in their relationship with the czath, who will go to great lengths to please the gorgs. The gorgs find this dim-witted adulation quite amusing, and thus treat the czath with a little more compassion. Another important aspect of their society is the influence of money. They will virtually change alignment for the right price, and will set aside any prejudices at the slightest hint of reward.

The koba have a very neutral outlook on those not of their kind. They are reclusive and generally try to avoid any sort of contact with the more 'civilized' races. This has made them fairly nomadic, though they will happily share territory with lutrai or skoles. While they are slow to warm up to strangers, they can become incredibly loyal and generous friends. They share a strong cultural bond with the lutrai, as their species share a similar philosophy and natural equalibrium. The two compliment each other well, the caution and patience of the koba offset by the carefree impulsiveness of the otter-folk.
