Since it's winter, I've been wearing lots of vintage gloves. Also wear snappy looking jackets (only 2 are brown) along with nice scarves and many other things.
I don't dress full out steampunk at all, I just like to add acessories to what I wear. Cameo brooches ftw. I keep it casual, no goggles (well, I don't wear them anyway) and my skirts and pants are modern. I just spruce them up with what I think is hints of steam.

I make most of my clothes so I always try to draw the line right down the middle between steam and modern. It's just a whole lot of updated victorian clothing patterns, clockwork jewelry, and vintagous hats and gloves.
It's actually probably going to be more commonplace for people to dress with the victorians in mind, considering that the fashion trends tend to follow pop culture events and the new Sherlock Holmes movie will be making it's debut soon.

I believe that for men hats and vests are certainly possible without remark. Sadly there are many more options for females since skirts, corsets, et cetera are common daily-wear.
It most likely comes down to dressing with intention and on the more formal side for both men and women. I doubt outsiders could consider an unclean person with dirty garments steamy unless they were fully decked out. If one is smartly pulled together, however, one most likely emits some steam - even unknowingly!

It is a little harder for men to get away with unfortunately. But for, vests pocket watches and goggles (usually around my neck, mind you) seem to be the usual if I go out with any intention of looking put together. Well, provided I go out at all. xd I'd also wear a decent steamy hat if I could find one to fit my enormous Italian head stressed
^^^ Edit: Hat suggestions welcome! ^^^

i wear a Black waistcoat, white shirt and a trilby usually. my "everyday steampunk" outfit has no brown in it... though i think my outfit stands out just enough from the goths/cybergoths, etc i hang out with (one of them dresses as a german SS soldier, with the hat and everything!) i do however have an assortment of brown jeans, cream coloured shirts, goggles, a leather flying jacket, etc for when the mood strikes me

Good ones too, if you don't mind felt. I could fit my whole head inside one of them. And my head isn't all that small. Some pageboy-type caps can also be quite stretchy. Speaking of which, I did manage to buy myself a top hat today! For my steamy wear, I usually use gypsy skirts (a shorter indian print over a longer plainer one), which are quite common in these parts, either my brown leather boots with the useless but nice looking buckles around the ankles or my brown op-shop hiking boots with the brass bits and pieces and then one of my white pinstripe shirts & black waist coat, which I then tighten up with a brown belt biggrin I'm also working on getting myself a pocketwatch, and when i've definitely finished growing, a corset. Oh, and I also have this neat little brass, harp-shaped compass on a copper chain. It's very old, and very beautiful. Also, completely free. Well, that's my waffling on done for the day...

Thaddeus Grimlock Wow I'm loving some of these suggestions and that's why i'm going to compose a list of all your ideas. Keep Posting well... i now own a flying jacket, and two leather jackets (one black, one brown) they are all "everyday" wear, but if used right, make a great acompniment to a steamy outfit also, WW2 goggles. you dont have to wear them on your eyes, but black-strapper WW2 goggles are a "cool" thing at the moment, so they are perfect for everyday wear.

I've also found that victorian-style ladies heeled boots don't tend to draw any unfavourable attention.

I would say waistcoats were unisex since I tend to were mine fairly often, spats are also fun to wear, warm for the cold weather too. I frequently find myself wearing newspaper boy hats in this season, more of a commoner look though.
In the case of jewellery I find pearls rather fitting, but not the incredibly large, scary and obviously fake ones. (which I don't like if you've noticed, mainly 'cause everyone seems to be wearing them)

I love to add Steampunk jewelry to my outfits. Usually with a gear necklace with a chandelier type chain necklace. I also love adding feathers to headbands for my hair.
