Kaira wanders into the dorm room, cold and rather put out seeing someone else in the room. She notices that he says something to her, but she is unwilling to say much back. Too much has happened to let her be that trusting.
Instead, she stops in the doorway, propped against the doorframe, and with a breathy gasp, Kaira jerks an arm bandage tight and cinches the knot, hoping this time it will hold. She turns, though pauses and doubles back over her shoulder.
The boy seemed scared. Skittish was the word, and he personified it perfectly. But in a cute and adorable puppy sort of way. It amused her. Both his seeming apprehension of her and his sort of stuck form. She had never before met a Were that was stuck permanently halfway between human and non. Briefly the word 'half-breed' flashed through her head before she snorted it away; Kaira's kind were all ‘halfbreeds’. The shifting Were belonged neither to the animal kingdom nor to humankind, but rather a unity of both.
The thought sobers her, and Kaira frowns again, but before she moves away in a whisper of sweet night air, she flashes a rare sort of smile at the boy standing awkwardly in the middle of the room and raises her hand in a motionless wave. Then she disappears into the hallway, sweeping off to explore the Sanctum.
