Appearance Description
Hotaru is not as concerned with her appearance as other girls her age simply because of her inability to see it. What she cannot perceive, she can’t be bothered with. Thanks to her blindness, it wouldn’t be totally out of place to see her donning attire that just doesn’t match. Her skin is comparable to ivory, and her face is free of blemishes and scars. Though her lips are nearly always pursed into a fine line, they are full – something which is usually unseen due to the constant lack of emotion in her face. Hotaru is of average height and weight, yet she cares not what she eats and does not worry about dieting.
Her garb generally consists of a knee length Haori with over sized sleeves, made from the finest silks and satins her family’s money could buy. Black leggings are always worn on her lower half for easy movement, as well as a pair of calf-high, soft-soled black boots on her feet. Hotaru wears her hair in a bun most days, as it falls to her waist in a fit of curls and easily gets in her way.
Hotaru takes a special kind of pride in the fact that “no man” has ever seen her eyes. Much like a security blanket, a band of soft black material covers her brow and descends down to the high rise of her prominent cheekbones. The blindfold protects her ultra sensitive eyes from sunlight during the day hours, and at night, ultimately keeps her from seeing things she’d rather not see. When it’s absolutely necessary, Hotaru will remove her blinder. When it is not necessary, she will proudly refuse. Several fights broke out during her Academy days because of curious peers and persistent bullies. Hotaru is happy to say nothing ever came of it.
Personality
Hotaru is often overlooked by her peers, not simply because she does not stand out amongst them, but because of her own reclusive tendencies. She is willing to go great lengths to distance herself emotionally from those in her day to day life, hoping the divide will keep her well grounded and focused. Due to being blind and alone her nearly her entire life, Hotaru also shows signs of severe anxiety and paranoia. Those that get close enough will find that Hotaru is a very kind and empathetic individual, though the task of getting through may be, at first, difficult to say the least.
History
Hotaru grew up in the village of Konohagakure with nothing but a scroll and the left behind belongings of her predecessors. She lived an innocent life of solitude with the exception of one acquaintance, Hideki Kibou, the son of the man responsible for killing her mother. It was a rather intense situation, but at times, Hotaru found him to be her only confidante. The role Kibou played in her life was generally silent, and he seemed more than willing to complete any task she presented him with. Hotaru wasn’t sure if it was out of remorse or if there were ulterior motives. The relationships itself, to say the least, was awkward.
She graduated to Genin without flying colors, unlike Kibou, who received honors and was directly sent on missions. The village seemed to baby her, offering her silly things such as escort missions and supply runs. This obviously was incredibly frustrating for Hotaru. Seeking some sort of relief from the lack of pressure the village put on her, Hotaru fell into old scrolls documenting the life of her mother, Akamatsu Maika.
After days buried in various documents and scrolls, Hotaru knew more than she would have liked. She found that her mother’s death was the result of bad timing on the account of a teammate. In the end, they blamed her blindness, saying that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The teammate however, Kibou’s father, took the full weight of the responsibility on his shoulders. At trial, the man confessed that he was caught in the heat of the moment, and saw nothing but victory… not even Maika. He said that is was he who was blinded, and that her attempts should not be thought fruitless. In his words, she was an asset to the team… and he was responsible for this loss.
Unsatisfied, she continued to delve into the dark past of her mother. Her findings made her very aware that the woman who birthed her struggled in every aspect that she had. Maika knew this, apparently, as she had scheduled a surgery for the day after she was to return from the mission that ended in her death. Reading over the information about the surgical process and what it entailed, Hotaru was filled with a sense of hope she’d never felt. Her mother had found a loophole to the Akamatsu curse, she’d just never acted upon it… or wasn’t given the chance.
Hotaru, however, was still very much alive. Once she approached Kibou with the information regarding the surgery, he seemed to become irritated. When she insisted that they travel to Kumogakure to find this surgeon, Kibou was outraged, saying that she was giving up something precious and that she was a silly little girl. This, of course, resulted in a fight. Hotaru was surprised to find him outside her door the next morning, waiting with crossed arms and a sullen expression on his face.

Katon: Enten no Jutsu ( Blazing Heat )
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjutsu
Enten amplifies the natural heat of the human body into a powerful offensive tool, allowing the user to gather or expel sustained bursts of heat by focusing chakra, typically through the hands. These expulsions of heat can sometimes be confused with Fuuton thanks in part to their "invisible" nature; however they are relatively short range and lose energy quickly. The traces of heat left behind by Enten dissapate very slowly and can remain for up to several hours.

Hotaru is efficient at walking on vertical walls and leaping to incredible heights, but has yet to master walking on water.
Kekkei Genkai
Sekigaigan - a thin white membrane that attaches cellular sensors to the human eye, allowing the possessor to see the world based on the thermal emissions of the objects in it. This ability will extend as far as the normal human eye, but only at the price of complete blindness in natural, sunny day lighting. This ability is used at night for things such as target acquisition, surveillance, night vision, homing and tracking. This Kekkei Genkai only affects the females of the Akamatsu family.
Note: There is no current research on how Sekigaigan can be passed between bodies. The cells of the membrane's tissue have incredible restorative properties. This means if the membrane is removed, the effects will cease until the cells regenerate themselves ( a week roughly ). This, however, is a dangerous practice since it involves cutting tissue from the eye.
