His ears bent back in shame as dawn broke the night, sending the skies into a chaotic and rather colorful frenzy. He was more than depressed today; he was near death! Or so he thought, and this pushed the mistling down the ever steep climb he struggled with. (mind you, both the emotional and the physical) From yesterday to today, the events a creature could overcome were only so much and it would seem Rustywing had met his maker of karma and regret; running recklessly from something he neither saw nor smelled was his first offense, and much to his dismay not the worse.
His sprint was of fear, unlike most that are out of bliss. He was afraid of what crept behind him, afraid of what touched the wire hairs of his head and most afraid of the eerie stillness that day brought to the forest. Something called his name sweetly and coaxed him back the way he cameā¦but this mistling would not comply. It called again, and for the life of him, Rusty could not remember who he had told his name to last! Was it by accident someone heard him whisper? Or perhaps someone could hear the calls and were just playing silly games. The final mistake was the spin around as his heart raced and his eyes bugged, desperate to make out what chased him. What sat behind the mistling was not a bear, nor lion, nor gator or demon...but simply the forest. In all of its green, quiet glory it sat and watched the silly creature fumble. A few, staggering steps backward would leave Rustywing fallen onto his back in a deep hole with not one, but two injured paws.
He spent the night there, an entire day of sleep and now day two brought the songbirds, a melody to his ears as thirst was quickly settling. For food, Rusty feasted off the leaves and twigs that fell from tall trees, a silent rage building against even the things that seemed to help him most.
Having no hope, no faith, and no logic, Rustywing began this day as he did all the rest; tucking his head toward his stomach and sleeping. No one would come. No one would find him. He had no one, could remember not a single mistling from his past, and found this to be a reason worth dying...if the heavens allowed.

Creampaw started her day like she did any other day. She rolled off the leaves she collected for her bed, stretched and yawned and brushed off any dirt from her light colored fur. Making her way to the large leaf that covered her den entrance, she slowly lifted it up and winced when the morning sunlight hit her still sleepy eyes. Stepping to the outside world, she sneezed and shivered, the cool, humid air always having that affect on her.
She looked this way and that, and as usual, she was alone. It wasn't that she preferred it, it was just she had no one. Sure there was a family of Mistlings that she bonded with, but they all lived on their own.
Sighing to herself she went back into her den and came back out with a Mistling sized bag that she slipped onto her torso and soon scampered off through the tall, wet grass. She soon came upon her destination, a little ways out of the forest and found some bushs that had small, red berries.
Gathering as much as she could into her pack so she would have food for the day, she went over to a leaf that was hanging down from the weight of the dew that was slipping off the green. She stood up on her tiptoes and reached up to it, hoping to grab the leaf and get a drink. But she squealed when the drop slid off and splashed right on her.

Having managed to only slip into a partial paralysis, Rusty's ears twitched as they caught the squeal, the flutter of his lashes and hardly stirring form depicting uncertainty. "Hmm?" He moaned while the pain his front paws kept his chest to the soil.
He then heard rustling, like that of footsteps and tilted his head so one ear could hear more clearly. There was someone up there! Something, maybe, but that was unseen by the mistling; he was not alone! Shuffling his own hind feet to face where he thought the sound came, the male used the holes wall to prop up on both hind feet.
Perhaps it was wise for him not to say anything at all...but a third day spent in a ditch was not something he wanted, so if it meant a little interaction with another creature...then...so be it. "H-hello?"

Poor Creampaw waved her paws about as she looked at herself, her fur plastered to herself and water dripping off her ears and tail. She closed her eyes and let out a breath, paws falling rest against her belly, "I guess it's just my luck." she said to herself, taking off her pack.
She jumped in surprise when she heard a voice call out and she got down on all fours, looking around in confusion. She didn't see anyone else around. "H-h-h-hello?" she called out.

A...GIRL?
Oh, no this won't do! Rusty thought as he fell to his side with a grunt. A boy mistling would have been better; helping him and then so easily ditched. Females, however, Rusty figured they would get too attached too quickly.
But he was in a sticky situation and the only way out seemed to be through this newly found girl. Rolling around to hop back onto his hind legs, Rustywing spoke out again with an even shakier tone than the last.
"DOWN H-H-HERE!" Forepaws pressed gently against his chest, the mistling tried to keep his weight centered on raised toes as his nose searched for any reason to fret.

She looked around and then spotted what looked to be a hole in the ground. She knew the ground sometimes got loose and a Mistling could fall and get trapped. She scampered over and looked down. "O-o-o-oh! W-w-wait here, I'll find something to get you out!" she called down, scampering away. She ran to the bushs and gnawed off a long branch.
It was heavy, but she dragged it as best she could, grunting in her effort. Once she was to the hole, she pushed the branch into the hole, the thickest part of it angled upward, "D-d-d-do you need help up?" she called down.

His eyes squinted as a shadowy figure blocked off the sun, offering his sore eyes a moment to relax. Why, he thought as the halo encompassed the mistlings head, why help me? Granted he did ask for the help, but how often was it that when he asked for anything, it would come to him? Soft words echoed into his prison, stuttering and beckoning a smile to peek from lips, long over due of the gesture.
Raising one paw, Rusty felt the way his cheeks pressed up and drew his ears back, sliding it across his lips to feel just how taught it became. His life was filled with questions, the whatās and howās of why this or that happened; but as his smile grew awkwardly, all questions were lost. Listening to the grunts made just beyond the hole, Rusty tried to recover from his elated state.
...This was not who Rustywing was; Rustywing was a mess of emotional outbreaks and unstable ideals. Rustywing did not smile.
The sound of wood hitting soil sent Rusty reeling back against the wall, waiting and watching for its stability. Once everything seemed settled, the girls words coming again but disregarded by the male mistling, Rusty went for the object anxiously.
The branch was sturdy enough, but Rusty was hardly one for balance and as he stumbled to scale the wood his paws began to slip off one by one till he was falling backward. Extending one limb up and out, the male reached for the top of the branch but in any case would accept anything that would get him to safety.

Creampaw scaled down the branch a bit, seeing the male was struggling to get up. She had never seen another look so poorly before, he must have been stuck in the hole for a while! Seeing him fall back, she snatched her paw out and grabbed his outstretched one, holding on tightly, her tiny claws digging into the bark of the wood under her.
"I....I g-g-g-got y-y-you!" she exclaimed, squeezing her eyes shut from the effort. She leaned back and made sure he had is hold onto the stick before letting his paw go and slowly making her way backwards up the stick just so she woudn't lose sight of him.

Pushing aside all the anxiety and frustration, Rusty saw the opportunity to feel the security of leveled ground and immediately went for it. Latching on to the hand that was offered, the male jerked boldly against the branch and flew toward the other Mistling, knocking the piece of wood into the hole in the process.
"UUUHHH" He cried as the tumble commenced, Rusty not knowing in those split seconds passing whether he would topple onto Creampaw or land beside her. Hopefully he wouldn't crush her...
Because how would he explain a squished Mistling in the middle of the forest to those curious few who passed by? Certainly he did not care if he hurt her a little...?

Creampaw immediately shot out of his way when he tumbled to the ground and she panted a little, staring at him. But seeing the condition he was in, she scrambled around, tearing off a piece of leaf and putting some dew into it and going over to him.
"H-h-here, you n-n-need to drink s-s-something. I...I have s-s-some berries, but y-y-you need to drink first." she stated softly, holding the edge of the leaf to his muzzle and letting the water roll against fur.

His initial thought was to run, glancing over to Creampaw after a few deep breaths and staring curiously. However, as she extended a leaf with water, and looked to be just as shaken as he was, the mistling settled a bit and considered.
She did help him, after all. If it weren't for this little girl he would have drowned during the next rainfall, or died from starvation...blinking once, Rusty took the leaf cautiously and slurped the water up in one gulp.
"T-Thank you." he stuttered, trying to clear his throat so he would be the only one NOT nervous sounding. "For saving me, t-too..."

Creampaw smiled softly, paws fidgeting near her belly, "I-i-i-it's no p-p-problem. I a-a-a-am just g-g-glad you're ok." she told him and went to her dropped bag. Grabbing it, she went back over to him and opened it up and set it down in front of him, revealing the berries inside, "You c-c-can h-h-have as many a-a-as you like! Anything to help you get better." she stated, sitting back onto her rump as she gave him some space.
She wanted to ask him how he got into the hole and just how long he was down there, but he looked like he needed food and water much more then he needed to be asked questions.

Creampaw was right; he was in dire need of food and water! However , not enough to stop him from being polite. On any other day, under any other circumstance, Rusty would gladly take the berries and then dash. He had to remind himself once or twice every few moments that she rescued him. Without her paw...he shivered at the thought.
Leaning forward to see what was inside, Rusty grimaced. None of the berries were his favorite. Actually, he didn't like anyone of them; not even the smells! But shoving one paw in and crumpling his face to eat it was the only option when his tummy gurgled and bubbled for food, and her soft eyes watched contently. One tasted fine, but the darker one...YUCK!
"Uhm..." he responded through chews, practically swallowing them whole. "Thank you... Why....why were you out here anyway? It is...kind of...dangerous." Letting his paws fall back into the bag, he grabbed a handful and shoved them into his mouth.
Heck, they were food.

Creampaw watched to make sure he ate and then debated going to get more for him. When he asked why she was out so far, she fidgetted nervously and looked ashamed, rubbing at the fur on her belly, "W-w-well...a-a-a-all the b-berries near my d-d-den are all gone. O-other Mistlings got to them. B-b-but I don't mind! J-j-just means I-I-I c-can explore more." she said, trying to look convincing.
It was true other Mistlings got the berries near her home, but she didn't like to complain, scared they might yell at her. So, needing food, she figured it would be good to go out of her way to find what she needed. She took the empty leaf and went to get more water for him.
