All I have to say for my overarching comment this week is, how many "well" episodes can we have?! We had the submarine last season and now this: Stuck at the bottom of an oil rig drilling shaft. The problem is EXACTLY the same as what I said in the review of last season's episode like this. The level of cliche in it was a bit over the top, though they did slightly improve upon the template for such a story. They added in that third (and in this case even a fourth) party for the two main characters to work around and get away from. Happy about that, but bored out of my mind by everything else. You see enough of these, it gets old.
Also, please don't tell me I'm the only one who thought Will was being uncharacteristically whiny in this episode. I was seriously begging for him to shut up throughout the first half hour. He sounded like a complete dork, which he isn't. This also isn't the first time I've been upset with the writers about what's been done to his character. He's gone and pulled a Michael Shanks on us; he went from learned doctor to generic male lead in no time. In the last episode, Veritas, when he mentioned he was a psychiatrist I went "Oh yeah, that's what you do. I forgot!" They've moved him so far away from the reason why he's even in the show that his character makes less and less sense as time goes on. While I'm glad they centered part of the reason for his whining around his profession, he was still being extremely annoying, which is unlike any of his incarnations.
I will give the writers credit for originality in enemies this time, as I mentioned a bit before. Vampire squids and sea scorpions. Totally original from what I know. The writers accounted for everything in making the scorpion's presence feasible, too. The CGI during the bit where Will was pulled underwater by the squid was fantastic! It really looked like the tentacles had him. The scorpion's movements were also in perfect alignment with the set, so all of it looked real. The fight between animals was very well done as well.
After a bit of a "no duh" ending where the conflicts of interest were resolved and a very anticlimactic cliffhanger of how they got out of the shaft, the credits rolled. That was it. It was not all bad once again; the acting was pretty good (despite the awkward writing) and the effects were great, but this episode still left me with a gaping lack of fulfillment that other recent episodes didn't. I was sad. I waited two weeks for that?
