Due to some major issues in real life, I'm giving up the teaching of this thread. It should go to a 0_0 Kiko Ele Chan 0_0 since she/he claimed it after I did, but I haven't seen them active yet. I'm sorry all, but I just can't give this the kind of attention it needs.

I'm really not fond of statistics and all that jazz about how German is a reigning language around the world and yadda yadda yadda. I assume that if you clicked into this little thread, you are interested in learning the language. I am a grammar Nazi. (cue the hysterical laughter. Situational humor sorry.) Forgive me if I beat on your fingers with a ruler. Also, I'm trying to give the easiest pronunciation as possible. I.e. the America pronunciations of words. I was never any good with phonetics.

New: I'm hopefully roping XWraith_LordX into helping me with pronunciations. Please Alex? Everybody, beg with me. Please? I'm kidding by the way. She has already offered some recordings.

I am leaning towards teach this two ways. One, the grammatical way, which is hard for those of us learning our first-second language. And two, the natural way, which is where you learn little bit by little bit. This is typically how you learned your first language. It also takes a bit longer I think.

To all my readers, I humbly give you an sincere apology if I start speaking French. In at least two spots above I was so tempted to say "Alors." I'll try to keep the other worldly words in check. Also, I am NOT fluent. I just understand the way languages work. Native and fluent alike are more than welcome to correct me.

If you don't wish to use the links below, I'll try to remember to post the lessons as a dark red.

Lesson Links:
First lesson - Greetings and Genders: Same post
Second - Pronunciations: Page 2
Third - Introductions and Conversational phrases: Page 3
Fourth - Pronouns: Page 4

First lesson, albeit a short one. I'm still adding to the word list

Everyone knows the English "hello." The Germans even say it! Although theirs is a bit more of a "Hallo."

Hello --- Hallo
Good Morning --- Guten Morgen
Good Day --- Guten Tag
Good Afternoon --- Guten Tag (likely to be wrong)
Good Evening --- Guten Abend
Good Night --- Gute Nacht

xxxxThis last one is more of a right before you go to bed kind of goodbye

Goodbye --- Auf Wiedersehen

German is a language that separates masculine, feminine, and neutral/neuter. When I give nouns, I will try to remember to let you know the gender of the word. But it's sometimes easy to see that the "female" words almost always end in -e.

The "tags" in front of a word are either going to be "a" or "the." The word "the" is a little easier to tell the differences between genders.

Masculine: Der (dare)
Feminine: Die (dee)
Neuter: Das (dass)
Plural: Die (dee)

With that, here is your daily word
Coat --- Mantel
Masculine, accusative

If you like, I can record some things for you if you'd like some videos of pronunciation for others to listen to.

Helpful tips for feminine words:

Here are some nouns that end in -e that are feminine.

die Brücke - bridge
die Sonne - sun
die Erde - earth
die Ecke - corner
die Wache - guard/watch

die Aussage - statement

Anything ending in -keit, -heit,-schaft, -ung, -ie or -tät is always feminine.

die Einsamkeit - loneliness
die Schönheit - beauty
die Wissenschaft - science
die Richtung - direction
die Industrie - industry
die Universität - university

Many nouns ending in -ik are also feminine.

die Musik - music
die Physik - physics
die Grammatik - grammar

Tips for writing umlauts when they are unavailable:

In case you can't type these with your keyboard, here is how you can write their equivalents for German.

Ä = ae
Ü = ue
Ö = oe

ß = ss

Therefore:

Gänse = Gaense
Gefühl = Gefuehl
Öl = Oel
Ausreißen = ausreissen

Now there is no reason for anyone not to type correctly. razz

Guten abend!

Ich heiße Ashley, wie heißt du? Ich wohne in Utah, wo wohnst du? Ich bin sechzehn Jahre alt.

Ich spreche Deutsch nicht so gut, aber, ich liebe es. Meine Grammatik ist auch nicht so gut.

Ich speche Deutsch nicht so gut, aber, ich liebt es. Meine grammatik ist nicht so gut, auch.

May I make some corrections?

- I think it's "in Utah", not "im Utah."

- "jahre" should be capitalized, since it's a noun.

- "Ich spreche", you forgot the 'r'.

- "Ich liebe", not "ich liebt." "Liebe" is for the first person, and "liebt" is for er/ihr.

- "grammatik" should also be capitalized, since it is also a noun.

I don't believe that you should phrase "Meine Grammatik ist nicht so gut, auch" like that. It should be "Meine Grammatik ist auch nicht so gut."

Oh thanks! :]

Well, that's what I'm here for, so thanks for the help.

And the spreche bit I blame the fact that I was posting from my iTouch, and the keyboard on that thing sucks, lol.

But other than that, I'm only in my second year of German, so yeah, I've still got a lot to learn! Like I said my grammar sucks.

Yeah, iTouchs are weird to type on. ><

Did you just start your second year this year then?

Personally, though I'm not in charge of the lessons, I feel it would be more beneficial to everyone if we started with pronunciation and how to read German first, so you guys can read everything.

This site will explain it to you.

Yes, I just started my second year of German, so I'm still not really good with the sentence structure and stuff, but I'm pretty good at understanding what people are saying to me, though I need them to speak a little slowly. Haha.

And yes, iTouches are really weird to type on.

You'll get better at it. German grammar may be challenging in some points but it's a lot of fun and you can make all kinds of fun and varied sentence structures with it. wink

On the bright side, my little knowledge in German has been helping me with Russian, since I started taking Russian this year. XD
