The Story:

Years ago, the same time that the world was under great threat, the Angels had risen out of the Heavens. The Alchemists stumbling upon the earth and what they could do defied what the Gods could allow a human to do. The battle between Angels and Alcemists began. Lasting for years, until one day, the Alchemists were outnumber, no longer able to fight. The Angels gained victory, they banished the Alechemists from residing on earth. It was until now, however, a young Alchemist by the name of Hermes, escaped from the depths of his banishment and returned to earth. A young Angel, a young Mark, had been sent to earth to protect it and take care of Hermes.

The Angel whom had been protecting Earth was absent from her post and unable to fulfill her duties, while her heart was torn between the two. Therefore, the Angel, whom had once been so respected upon the Heaven's was made a Fallen for her attachement to an Angel and an Alchemist.

Yet again the battle has begun, who's side will prevail this time? What's at the heart of each male in the fight? What's the purpose of the fight, saving Earth, again, or the Fallen Angel?

Hermes Trismegistus sat on the edge of a fountain in the town square, polishing his gun. He'd already cooked up all his philtres, organised his ammunition, carved and sanded the nicks and dings out of his staff, eaten and bathed. All his preparations were complete, and they would be coming for him soon.
Around him, the square was notably tense. No vendors were selling their wares, nobody was shopping, only a few people were milling about at all. It wasn't a holiday, it was him. People were scared of him, of his kind. Alchemists were feared as 'agents of the devil'. So when Hermes had shown up in town, people made themselves scarce. The few people left in the square cast nervous glances his way, as if he might explode if they turned their backs to him too long. They knew the fight was coming just as he did. There was only one question.
Who would they send?

Mark nodded as the order was given. This Hermes was supposedly one of the most dangerous Alchemists of the old age. Mark was considered a fallen angel, though he kept a careful grip on his dark side and so was admitted back into the holy order. He was forbidden from releasing the demon within for fear that he would not be able to supress it once it had come out.

He stepped to the pool and dropped down into it, falling like a star in the night sky, though the sun stood brightly in the sky. Mark landed on the other side of the fountain, his wings curled around his knelt form. A long blade extended back into his wings where he held the hilt. He stood slowly, his hair blowing out and his piercing blue eyes instantly fixed on Hermes.

"Hermes Trismegistus, you have been judged and banished once from the face of the earth for crimes committed against the Gods and their Angels. How you have returned thus to the earth is of little consequence. You are not permitted to remain. Return as you came with no damage to Earth or her Guardian Angel."

Hermes didn't see the angel descend, so much as he saw the signs. The way the water in the fountain behind him shimmered as it reflected the holy light, the horrified expressions on the people in the square as they ran for cover, the insufferable air of smug superiority that surrounded such creatures (okay, maybe he just imagined that last one). The signs were there, plain as an archangel fallen to earth. A deva. They sent a deva after me. Crap. he thought miserably, for thus were such entities known to the Alchemists, who refused to acknowledge the theological tenets that the rest of the world lived by.

Hermes rose to his feet, idly brushing the dust from the seat of his pants. He put out an air of sad resignation, as though he'd given up at the mere sight of the angel. He made his way around the fountain to face his would-be captor.
"Alright, deva" he said sadly, speaking as he walked. "I've had my fun, after all. How can I refuse you, great one?" he reasoned, ending as he got a clear line of sight to his opponent..."Oh right. Hell no!"
And he fired his gun at Mark without a second's hesitation.
"Nobody is going to send me back to that prison. Not you, not her, not God himself!" Gone was the facade of sadness, his was a voice full of anger and pain and desperation. Truly a powerful man with everything to gain and nothing to lose. The most dangerous sort.

Mark had stood as Hermes approached, not for a single moment buying into his act. He took flight as he saw the alchemist's hand start up. "Why am I so little surprised you choose to do things the hard way?" He called out to the man. "There were so many better options for you... well, at least one better option." He drew his blade up and slashed down towards Hermes. The line his blade took as he slashed lit up with white energy as it made its arc. The arc of energy was speeding towards Hermes as soon as the arc was completed. Mark seemed to remain there in the air, watching the attack make its way towards the alchemist. "An attack has been made on a member of the Holy Order of Ancients. Sentence... damnation in the face of immortality." His eyes narrowed and he seemed to shimmer slightly before solidifying again.

Hermes tucked and rolled into a forward somersault, the blade of energy soaring over and beyond him harmlessly to smash to the ground behind him. Not stopping, Hermes sprang to his feet and had already broken the barrel of his pistol and was loading a new bullet in it. He snapped the gun closed and pulled a small, round obect out of his pack, a wooden ball with a fuse stuck in the side. He ended his forward motion by alighting on the edge of the fountain.
"You move your mouth, but all I hear is the same tired, old, self-righteous drabble. You devas are all alike. If you've nothing of import to say, do shut up." He said, tossing the bomb at Mark without lighting the fuse.

"Oops" he said, apparently just realizing he'd handed his enemy a free weapon. He aimed his gun at Mark and shifted his staff from the crook of his arm to his free left hand. The staff was a work of art, a solid length of dark, polished wood, topped by a red crystal the size of a man's fist. The whole thing was wrapped in wires of copper, silver, and gold, that ran down the length of the staff in a beautiful weave. The wires also allowed the staff to conduct energy more efficiently, and the crystal was a catalyst and capacitor for alchemic transmutation. The perfect blend of form and function.

The unlit bomb flew through Mark's form which disappeared soon after as another arc came at him on ground level to his right. "As are you alchemists, assuming rank and order are little more than clothes to be changed at will." Mark's voice was loud and clear. He stood between two buildings in an alleyway that held enough shadow to make him almost indistinct. The voice echoed again from his left side. "You carry with you only death for a companion whilst I carry the voice of an Angel, forever echoing within me, and the voices of the gods filling me with holy might." Mark's form was indistinct here too, again hidden by the shade of buildings.

His dark blue eyes bored hard into Hermes' countenance, memorizing each line and texture, documenting each movement and the ease of motion. He would not lose this fight. The darker presence was there as well, hiding beneath the surface. Anthony lurked in the background, searching, waiting for a chance to spring to the forefront.

[[Sincerest apologies for the lack of action on my part. A bout of depression has left me with severe writer's block, and I've not been sufficiently motivated to think up, let alone write, new posts. Here it is, my long overdue response.]]

"Great, now he's talking in riddles. If there's one thing I can't stand it's devas." Hermes griped. "Nobody that boring deserves that kind of power"
While he spoke, he dug a vial out of his bag and unstoppered it, pouring the clear liquid contents into the fountain where he stood. Almost instantly, the water began to smoke, rapidly vaporizing into a fog that hung thick in the air, obscuring Hermes, the fountain, and most everything else in the square. Having successfully used this trick before, Hermes knew how to detect movement in the fog by looking for disturbances in the air displacing the fog and moving it. He doubted his deva friend would have the same knowledge.
He would wait it out, forcing his enemy to make the first move and reveal his position, then he'd blast him while he was still concealed. The deva couldn't get out of the line of fire if he didn't know there was one. Hermes replaced the unspent bullet in his pistol with one inscribed with sigils and formulae, designed to counter spirits and other entities comprised mainly of energy. Even if the damnable thing dematerialized again like he had with the bomb, the bullet would disrupt his energy pattern. On ghosts it was instantly lethal (though that was probably the wrong term for 'killing' dead things), but devas had a lot more energy, and thus could sometimes withstand several such shots. Another reason Hermes hated devas, they were too damn hard to kill. It was probably going to take all his stockpiled supplies and energy just to bring down this one.
