"Hey, wake up. Breakfast is ready." Aorin said, poking his sleeping companion gently in the ribs with a foot. Indeed, laid out next to the small campfire was a meal of sorts. The last of the meat from the rabbits Aorin had caught the day before, some potatoes, and a bit of tea.
"It's not much, but at least it's warm." He said, with a wry smile.
"But by the time you pry yourself from your pillow, lazybones, it might not even be that. Come on, let's eat"
He sighed and sat down next to the fire, gazing out at the horizon. The bleak scene before him stretched on forever. Ashen ground, scorched trees, ruined, empty towns. Nothing had been spared in the destruction left behind by the forces of the evil one, Tyras.
One day, We'll set this right he told himself daily. One day, we'll see the sun again

Elaine gave a soft groan of protests. "Aorin... I've warned you about waking me..." She said, stirring a bit to roll from his foot. Laying on her back she slowly opened her eyes. Her deep blue eyes gazed up at the sky and she sighed, instantly remembering where she was. The wastelands were something one could never seem to get out of their mind.

Slowly she tuned back in to Aorin as he was talking and she chuckled, sitting up and her hands pushed her up gently. She sniffed the air, "Mmm... your cooking smells as good as it tastes." She complimented. She had cooked a few times, but he seemed to be able to make things that much better. Plus, some did say that cooking was always better when someone else dose it.

Elaine scooched up to be sitting besides him and she looked over the meal and, as if on cue, her stomach growled. She chuckled softly. "Never fails." She started to dish him up a plate, she always did his first, he did fix it and even killed it, this time. Then she fixed herself a plate and began to eat.

Aorin smirked. Elaine's appetite was legendary. Not once had anyone in their command out-eaten the woman. Nobody knew where she put it all, though a soldier's joke had had it that she had a second stomach. It made keeping them fed a chore, Not that Aorin was complaining. One couldn't ask for better company than Elaine.
"We're running low on supplies again. We've enough food and water left for the day ahead." He said, pulling a map out of his pack. He spread the map out on the ground and indicated their position. "There's a lake not far from here, we can refill our water there. Might find food there too. Used to be a town situated on the far shore." He said through a mouthful of potatoes. "Might be that we can even sleep in a bed tonight. The gods only know my back won't stand for one more night on the ground."

Elaine ate happily and nodded as Aorin spoke. She listened to him, he knew how to get around and was rather skilled. He was the one guiding them through the wastelands, so whom better to listen to? She ate the last of her meal when she heard that this was all that they had. She gazed at him and nodded, the solemn look evident in her eyes.

She nodded, "You and me both could use a decent place to sleep." She commented, quietly packing up what they were finished with and she sighed, stretching out her limbs. A few pleasant pops could be heard along with her neck cracking and she sighed, "Damn ground." She grumbeled faintly as she moved to be before Aorin and held out her hand to help pull him to his feet.

Aorin doused the fire and scattered the ashes, then helped clean up camp. It was a long walk ahead of them, and while not a particularly difficult one, it seemed nowhere was completely safe these days. He had a bad feeling about their destination, though granted he hadn't felt good about much of anything since before the war. Likely he would have lost it if not for Elaine's support.
He made sure his weapons were secure and shouldered his pack, then wrapped an arm about Elaine's waist and held her close, drawing comfort from that closeness that he would need for the journey ahead. As long as she was close to him, he felt like he could march right to Tyras' front door and hurl the evil b*****d down a flight of very high stairs.

Elaine strapped their longbows together, making sure they were secure and then let him carry the pack that held them together and she moved around, helping with what little bit Aorin had missed. She gazed at him, sensing he felt something was up, but she knew him damn well and he'd tell her if he fetl something was unsafe.

Once they were ready, her hand on the handle of her axe, she blinked a moment feeling Aorin's arm slipping around her waist. Elaine smiled softly, putting her arm around him and gave him a gentle hug. She knew the comfort that they drew from one another. She also knew how much it meant to that bond between them, it showed in everything they did. Fighting, defending, adventures and bantering. It flowed easily.

Aorin muttered a quick chant under his breath, casting a simple marching spell on the both of them that would allow them to walk most of the day without fatigue. Reluctantly he let Elaine go and turned to the horizon, the tingle of magic strengthening his step.
"Let's be off. If we start now we should reach the lake before nightfall."

He led the way, making for the lake. Aorin was an accomplished woodsman, and he knew his way about the wider world like few others. As a boy, he'd struck out on his own, hoping to make a name for himself as a heroic warrior. He'd quickly become hopelessly lost. A scout had found him in the woods, half-starved and afraid. He'd taken young Aorin under his wing, teaching him the scout's trade. Aorin had used these lessons to help other people, and thus his powers as a paladin had begun to stir.

Aorin smiled at the memories, the only thing apart from Elaine that kept him going in these dark times. They reminded him why he did what he did, and why he couldn't give up. He owed it to the people he'd fought to save, owed it to Elaine, who seemed to look up to him, owed it to himself. He looked back at Elaine, and slowed his pace so she could keep up with his long strides. He'd thought about teaching her to scout, as his mentor had taught him, but he wasn't sure if she had the knack. He was at least giving her archery lessons, and her marksmanship was definitely improving.
"How you holding up back there?" he teased, knowing full well she could keep up without any help from him.

Elaine gave a sly grin hearing Aorin and she followed after him. Scouting wasn't something she was very well skilled in and it showed, more than she wished it to. She followed after Aorin and tried to put her feet right where his had been, just like a little kid did when they followed someone. She would venture from him slightly, but was careful to not let him out of her eyesight, getting lost wasn't something she was too fond of.

She smirked hearing his comment and nodded, "I'm holding up just fine, thank you." She grinned and stepped up to his side once again. The magic chant he'd cast upon them always made adventuring so much easier. She gave a soft sigh, setting her axe down a second as she re-adjusted her gloves and picked it back up.

"Come on slow poke." She teased as she stepped passed him, putting the long handle of the axe across her shoulders, then let her arms hang from that, hooked securely in place by her elbows. She walked calmly and let her feet guide her, the little tingle in then placing a constant grin on her lips.

Aorin laughed as she walked past him. He quickened his pace and fell in beside her, ducking once or twice to avoid taking the handle of her poleaxe in the face.
"Me a slowpoke? I bet I could walk circles around you all the way to the lake, lazybones" he taunted. He flashed her a grin as he overtook her again, his equivalent of throwing down the gauntlet. He was just begging for a race, races he usually lost, but refused to admit defeat. 'Always let the lady win' was his mantra after another loss.
It was a ritual of sorts, one he took great pleasure in, since he lived for the chase. Besides, it gave him something to focus on instead of the endless expanses of ashen ground and dead trees. He kept up his slightly-faster-than-hers pace, hoping to goad her into running ahead.

Elaine lifted one of her slender eyebrows as she listened to him and knew he was itching her into the race. She knew he needed his mind distracted on their adventures so he wouldn't dwell. She swung her poleaxe from her shoulders, careful to swing it away from him to avoid injuring him.

Once the poleaxe was at her saide she slide it down so her hand was in the middle of the handle and she took a larger stride before she began to ran. She was a bit shorter than him, but for now, she was out running him.

"Catch me if you can!" She called over her shoulder at him. she paced herself easily, knowing full well she could beat him, but she liked chasing after him and keeping him chasing her.
