When Hunter S. Thompson won the "author of the month" voting, I went on the library website to see what my local library had available. I live in a town blessed by summer tourist tax dollars, and so the public library is generally very good, and I expected the library to have at least a few books by someone as well known as Thompson. In fact, there were several matches, but when I clicked on "availablity," it appeared something strange was going on:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - there are two copies, one "lost" and one listed as "claim returned," which also sounds like "lost" to me.
Hell's Angels - Lost
The Rum Diary - Lost
Kingdom of Fear - Missing
OK, one or two books...I could see that as a coincidence. Five? I'm thinking someone decided to start their Hunter S. Thompson collection using the public library. For the grand finale, there was one book, Hey Rube, listed as "In." I just went to the library. It's not on the shelf. I'll ask the librarians next time I'm there, but I have a suspicion it's gone the way of the others.

My library is terrible though, to be honest. I have mentioned how bad my local library is before though.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone took it upon themselves to censor your library, although it's equally likely that someone decided to, as you said, add them to their own collection.
I myself have only read Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, but I recently bought Fear & Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72 which I'll be reading soon. I love his attitude and writing style and I loves me some political satire, so I'm sure I'll love it just as much if not more.

Question the Answer I wouldn't be surprised if someone took it upon themselves to censor your library Perhaps, but that would be pretty selective censoring...I have a very good public library, and I'd like to see someone try to take the thousands of salacious texts off the shelves!

That does sound a bit strange... I have a copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Generation of Swine under one cover, and haven't seen it in any library or book store in awhile. I wouldn't be surprised if the library did censor it though. Stupid, but any kind of censorship in my opinion is stupid.
