Prologue The sun had set and most of the night life had come out to play. A dark haired youth poked his head out of a window of a three story house and smiled as he felt the wind on his face. His dark brown eyes glanced back into the home nervously, his eyes glinting with a tint of red in the little light that the night had to offer. He slipped out of the window and onto the small landing, glancing around once more. He really didn't want his mother to know that he was sneaking out. She'd try and make it look like he was going to hunt, which was not true. He wasn't a human hunter no matter how much he snuck out of his house in the middle of the night. He slipped off of the roof and onto the ground without a sound and slipped off into the shadows of the forest. He kept his mind outstretched for signs of who he was meeting. His telepathic abilities were what made him one of the most respected vampire's in the area, it was also a great boost in the social scene for his mother. He tore himself out of his thoughts as he came upon who he was looking for.
“Mathew, we should really meet closer to your house. That way we have an excuse if my mom catches us,” he said with a roll of his eyes.
The red haired man rolled his eyes as well and pushed himself off of the stump he'd been sitting on. Mathew was almost a foot taller than Dominic, who was a respectable five foot ten, and had dark green eyes that held the telltale tint of red. It was impossible to keep humans from seeing that so they had to keep to the shadows and the night. They, of course, didn't hunt humans. It was greatly looked down upon because of the stories that went around about their kind. It was utter garbage but then again there were the few vampire's that were addicted to the taste of human blood. Dominic pulled himself out of his thoughts as he glanced around once more.
“Relax Dom, if you mom was following us you'd know it,” Mathew said with a chuckle. He turned and began to walk deeper into the forest. Dominic sighed and followed, all he wanted to know was about the human girl that had been put in charge of the amulet, he'd become obsessed since the first time he'd seen her. He didn't dare tell his mother or anyone else, he'd be seen as a freak. So now he had to go through Mathew, her guardian, to find out more about her.
The amulet was the most powerful thing in the world of the supernatural. It had the power to heal or destroy. It made the human holding it almost supernatural and it also gave the species in possession of the human top dog status in the world of monsters. Dominic sighed, the last war had gone on for at least fifteen years and the last had gone on for even longer. The werewolves just wouldn't let it go, but then again they were known for keeping grudges for hundreds of years. Dominic sighed and thought back to when he'd first seen the beautiful Judith, he'd been going to Mathew's house to get away from his mother, as he often did, and he'd found both of them sitting in the sitting room talking. She was just so sweet and beautiful that he'd fallen for her almost on spot.
“Hey, lover boy. Snap out of it, we've gone far enough,” Mathew said, turning around to face the boy.
Dominic smiled and stopped along with him. The only person that knew how he felt about Judith was Mathew and he knew that he'd keep the secret. Mathew was a close friend ever since Dominic and his mother had moved to the colonies from France. It seemed that here there were more animals for hunting and more space for it as well. Several covens had moved into the area, humans being none the wiser. Dominic may look like he was sixteen years old but he was over a hundred years old. Mathew was even older. He'd stopped aging over two hundred years ago, though Dominic had never really figured out whether he was born or made.
Suddenly both men stiffened and glanced back the way they'd come. Someone was running toward them faster than any animal or human could even pray to run. They exchanged glances as one of Mathew's servant boys burst into the clearing. Dominic recognized the boy, he was one of the most gifted trackers that North America'd been blessed to see so far. He wasn't surprised that the boy had found them. But it also sent a chill down his spine, there had to be something wrong if he'd run all this way to find them.
“Sir....It....it's....horrible.....so.....Lady Judith............” the boy gasped as he struggled to get air into his lungs.
Both men exchanged looks and then began to run toward Mathew's mansion. If the boy had gone through the trouble of finding them in the middle of the forest then something was wrong, and even worse something was wrong with Judith. Dominic forced himself to shoot ahead of Mathew as the mansion came into view. He could smell the metallic sent of blood in the air and his heart skipped three beats in pure fear. There were only a few explanations for the sent of blood in the air and none of the boded good news for anyone. Dominic's heart began to thud painfully in his chest as he followed the scent, bile rising in his throat as he got closer. Bodies lay scattered all over the halls as he got closer, the walls were coated in the blood of the dead vampires. The sent in the air was tinged with fear and desperation. Dominic rounded the last corner and flung open the doors to Judith's bed chamber. He froze in shock as the figure on the bed, over the body of his beloved, lifted it's head to stare at him with red tinted eyes. The lips that were covered in her blood pulled up in a cruel smirk.
“Oh, I didn't know we'd have company,”
Mathew came to a halt next to Dominic and the boy could feel his friend stiffen. He didn't know the stranger but it seemed that his red haired friend did. The man moved away from the cold and lifeless form on the bed and raised his hands in front of him. His smirk never faded as the two vampire's faced him.
“Jared what the hell did you do!!!” Mathew snarled, taking a step forward.
Jared only laughed, his blond hair falling back from his face as he threw his head back. He got a hold of himself after a moment then glanced over at the body on the bed before chuckling once more.
“The poor little fool wouldn't give me the amulet.....said something in the terms of 'over my dead body'. I only gave her what she wished for, “ He said with another chuckle then sighed. “But alas you've come home and I've been thwarted....for now.” he said.
He then turned and took a flying leap out of the newly opened window. Dominic couldn't move for a few moments before the feeling in his limbs returned. He moved with shaky steps over to the side of the bed to stare at the woman on the bed. She'd given her life to protect the amulet, something that shouldn't have been her problem. He could feel tears beginning to flow to the surfaces of his eyes and he pushed them back, along with his heart and his pain, and locked them in a steel plated vault. This was now to be a taboo day, something he would strive for the rest of his immortal life to forget. He stared down at the lifeless body, all of her blood drained. He could see the amulet clutched in one of her pale hands. He felt bile rising in his throat as he stared coldly down at the girl. It seemed that Humans were good for nothing after all.
“Stupid Woman, she should have just given it up,” he whispered as he turned away from the bed and walked out of the room, not once looking back.

Chapter 1 “You do know that this is totally and utterly pointless, right?”
Dominic glared at his mother, clearly agitated by her actions and words. He sat back in a large chair at the end of the table. It was pushed out from the table slightly and one leg was crossed over his knee and bounced in time to his agitation. Why did this woman think she could control every faucet of his life? After a few hundred years it began to become tiresome.
“Yes, but every current paper you own says that you are seventeen and if I'm not mistaken in this day and age all seventeen year olds are required to go to school.” His mother responded, staring at him with amusement over her teacup.
Dominic only glowered at her, his leg bouncing a bit faster. He was sick of school! Every day it was the same things he'd already learned! All day he had to sit there and listen to humans think about things he had no desire to know. He had to sit there and feel their agitation and nerves and he was sick of it. He didn't want to enter another drama filled school of horrors for the rest of his eternal life! He was sick of humans and having to hide his powers from them. He didn't want to be normal!
His mothers gaze softened to something similar to pity, and he didn't like it. Of course she'd found out about the Amulet holder of old, she was almost as powerful with minds as he was. She'd understood why he'd been so sullen and distant afterwords. He didn't like having her know about it and most of the time tried to ignore it but it was impossible to ignore the waves of pity rolling off of his mother at the moment. He didn't need his vampiric abilities to be able to tell what she was thinking.
“Oh Dom, maybe if you would just make some friends you'd like school a bit more.” she said, her voice soft.
Dominic turned his head away from her and gazed at the floor, he didn't want to have this conversation again. How many times over the years had she suggested this. Normally he'd just nod his head and mutter something then excuse himself from the table and sulk.
“Yeah and in sixty years they'll be dead. No, thank you. I don't think I will.” he muttered, staring at his mother from the corner of his eyes.
“Fine, be that way but I still say it might help.” his mother said, her voice stiff and businesslike. He knew he'd said something to upset her but at the moment he was so annoyed with her that he didn't care.
He'd most likely apologize later, after he'd calmed down and was able to think rationally again. He watched her rise from the table and walk stiffly from the room. He had a feeling that she was going to be pissed with him for the next month or so. Oh well, no skin off his teeth. A sigh escaped his parted lips as he forced himself into a standing position. As much as he hated to admit it she had a point, He was seventeen and had to go to school. Oh joy right? If he didn't there would be questions and for their kind questions were dangerous depending on if the humans were smart enough to notice something off about them.
He grabbed his keys off of the hook and slipped out of the back door. A wave of hot, humid, air hit him in the face as he stepped out of the air conditioned house. Oh the wonders of living in a southern state! Why his mother decided to move them to this hick town he would never know. It wasn't like they didn't have their pick of cities. As it was the town was so small that he had to drive four miles to get to the High School, which was in the next town.
Lacombe, Louisiana was one of those towns that only have a few scattered stores along the main road and the rest of the town was woods and back-roads. It rests between two or three of the main towns on the North shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Mandeville and Covington to the west and Slidell to the east. If you already didn't know Southern Louisiana has more days of Summer than it does Winter and the winters are cold and damp. Humidity is a fact of life for the residence and hurricanes are the norm.
Dominic could not see why his mother loved this place. It had nothing but woods and a few scattered houses. Maybe she liked the hunting? He'd never know and frankly he wasn't curious enough to try and find out. He dwelt on it for a moment as he slid into the drivers seat of his truck and closed the door with a sharp snap. The truck was a bit older than what he'd normally buy but he figured it still had a few good years in it. Besides, he liked the worn out look of it. He slipped the key into the ignition and turned it quickly, a bit impatient to get away from his mother and all of the thoughts she'd induced on this lonely morning. The truck purred to life and Dominic turned the wheel and drove it down the winding drive way. Within a few minutes he was roaring down the highway and toward the school, his mind on how he was going to get through this school year. He was going to have to come up with a way to keep all of the girls away from him. He'd rather not have a bunch of admirers following him day and night. Frankly it was creepy and he'd rather blend in with the background rather than be the star. But it was inevitable ,he supposed, that as the new student he was going to be noticed for the first few weeks. How annoying.
It didn't take him long to reach Mandeville and it took only five minutes to find the school He made a note to himself to take the interstate tomorrow, seeing as the school was right next to the Mandeville and Abita Springs off-ramp. It would be faster this way, he'd avoid all the morning traffic going toward the Causeway. He sighed slightly as he pulled into the main driveway to the school. A circle of buses were letting the teenagers off so he guessed that he wasn't late to school. He pulled into one of the parking spots reserved for Visitors and quickly killed the engine. He noticed that even before he'd gotten out of the cab of the truck he was getting curious glances from the students. He could feel a nerve near his eye begin to twitch but he ignored it for the moment as he locked the truck and began to make his way toward the main office of Fontainebleau High School.
As he opened the door his face was greeted by a blast of much welcomed icy air. The room was sparsely decorated with a few pictures on the white walls. Across from the doors he'd just entered were another set of doors that lead out into what seemed to be a court yard. As he took a few more steps he noticed a table resting beside another door that was on the wall next to the other set of exit doors. He found himself curious to know what was in that room but he turned toward the counter and stared into the office space behind it. One of the women looked up as he approached and smiled politely at him. She rose from her seat and walked closer to the counter.
“What can I do for you sweetheart?” She asked, her voice motherly and warm. To most it was calming but it made him want to be sick. He didn't like the mother he had so why would he want one that he barely knew.
“I'm starting today and I need a copy of my Schedule,” He said in a polite tone, his voice a little cold from his lack of interest in conversation with the woman. The woman blinked then nodded, turning toward a stack of files on her desk.
“Name please,” she asked, her voice polite and distant.
“Dominic Smith,” he stated shortly. He just wanted to get the hell out of here and get the day over with.
He only had to wait a few moments before she found the right papers and handed them over. He gave the woman one thing, at least she was the most organized human he'd ever seen. She gave him a map and tried to point out all of his classes but he quickly assured her that he could find them on his own and she backed off and he quickly exited into the courtyard. As he stood there, under the covered walkway, he could see that the courtyard held a Gazebo in the center and toward the edge, closer to what appeared to be the gym, was a large patio centered around a small group of trees. Around these structures students had gathered and were chatting and complaining with their friends. It seemed as if the school day had not yet begun yet. He glanced idly down at his schedule and flinched minutely. He had math first...lovely right? He also noticed that instead of Chemistry he'd been given Environmental Science, interesting. He hadn't taken that in over two decades maybe he'd actually learn something. Maybe if he kept a slightly positive attitude he would want to kill himself by the end of the day? He doubted it but it was worth a shot.
He pushed a lock of dark hair out of his eyes and blinked a few times. The contacts he was wearing hid the red tint in his eyes and made them look a regular green-ish color. They didn't bother him much anymore, he'd long since gotten used to them. He turned down the walkway that lead past the Gazebo, wanting to find the classroom before the other students had a chance to get into the room. He might be able to speak to the teacher as well. As he passed the structure he paused for a moment. For some reason he felt as if something was not right. Something hovered on the edge of his senses just making it's self known but not enough for him to figure out what it was. A frown pulled at his lips and his eyes swept over the faces of the humans inside the structure, maybe one of them was not as human as they appeared? But alas that wasn't it, they were all humans as far as he could tell. Some of them peered at him curiously but he turned and continued down the path. He'd think on it later, he had other things to get done. Besides, it was probably some other monster that didn't want to make it's presence known to the Vampire. It was a possibility, there were a lot of other monsters that didn't get along with Vampires. Like Werewolves...and Dragons. He pushed the thought from his mind impatiently, he had things to do before he'd be allowed to dwell on it. He continued to stride down the walk until he came to the door that lead to the main hallway. His class should be in the last hallway that connected to this one. He noticed the vast amount of humans in the hall and suppressed the sigh that fought to escape his lips. He forced his way through the halls, trying to ignore the strange looks he was getting from the people. When he reached the hall he was looking for he slipped down it quickly, happy to be away from the large amount of people. It didn't take him long to find the class room and he was almost happy to see that the teacher was actually in the classroom.
“Excuse me but are you Mr. Brown?” he asked, keeping his voice polite.
The man glanced up at him and nodded, swiveling in his chair to look at him directly.
“Yes, and you are?” he asked, a brow rising.
“I'm the new student, Dominic Smith.”

The day was going a bit better than he'd expected, which surprised him a bit. He was sure that he'd go insane by the end of the day. All of the teachers were nice and most of the students didn't bother him that much but that may have been due to his annoyance. Several times he'd had the feeling that something wasn't right and it was driving him to the point of insanity that he couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. At the moment he was sitting in the back of his science class brooding on that fact when the feeling hit him again. He bit his tongue to keep the growl from forming on his lips. The feeling was faint but with every passing second it grew stronger and stronger. His eyes flickered to the doorway just as a human girl walked through it and the feeling spiked in intensity. His eyes narrowed then widened as he took in her appearance. She looked rather plain for a human with long red hair hanging over her shoulder in a tight braid and blue eyes that twinkled slightly in laughter at whatever the girl who had entered after her had said. That wasn't what held his attention though, it was what hung around her neck that kept his eyes glued to her. It was something that he hadn't seen in several hundred years, something he'd tried very hard to forget but had failed miserably. Something that haunted his nightmares.
Around the neck of this ordinary looking human was the Amulet that once belonged to Judith.
