New to Roleplaying? Okay, we can help with that. This is the Roleplay School, where you can get tips on roleplaying, to make yourself better at it. Here, you can ask questions about roleplaying, and what is proper when roleplaying, and all sorts of things. The objective is to make you into a better roleplayer than you are currently. Let's begin!

((Post below, and we'll start. Tell me what you want to work on.))

Ah, I hate them. That's not exactly what I meant by this thread, but I can give you a tip on that- most threadmasters state "No Godmodding" as a rule. PM them, and tell them, if they aren't already aware of the situation.

There are a few common courtesy rules in RPing I feel I should point out.

Updated [1/2/10]

1. Post Order : No one likes being post-skipped, that is, when people continue on an RP without waiting for your reply. For example: Person A posts, then person B and then person C, and finally person D. After D, A should be next, followed by B, C, and again D. That is keeping with proper post order. If person A posts, then B, and then D, then A, then C; A and D have gotten an extra action that C has to compensate for. It's no fun, trust me.

2. Illiteracy : Your literacy level in Gaia terms is supposed to be the amount you type in a single post. A single line is generally considered non-lit while several paragraphs can be lit or adv-lit. It's very hard for people to post to you if you're non-lit as it gives them little to go on. Give details! Even if they seem excessive do them at first and you'll slowly find the right rhythm and descriptive style that's right for you. An example of why it's hard to post to one-liners is : "Jane walked into the room". The person reading it only knows that someone named Jane is in a room. They don't know what the room looks like, what else is in the room, what Jane looks like , or what Jane does after they enter the room. The reader doesn't even know what gender Jane is! So "Jane walks into the room." can be expanded by descirbing Jane, the room, and what Jane does after she gets in the room. Is she looking at something? Is she going to go fiddle with something? Expand! When you make a nice post and know you're really contributing to the RP experience you feel good about it. Trust me!

3. Stay in character : Do you find that all your characters, no matter how you described their personality, all seem to act the same when you RP them? It's a common habit that even experienced RPers run into since your posts will almost always convey the mood you're in. So if you're character is quiet and dismal, you don't want to post while you're feeling like you're bouncing on bubbles. I'm not saying "Oh you must be depressed to post as this person!" but it does help to get in the mind-set. The easiest way? Music! If you character is angry, play something a bit heavier like Wintersun or Blind Guardian. Are they happy? Go with light and airy music like... I don't really listen to anything like that so come up with your own examples! But it can get infuriating that if you're RPing with someone and their upset character that you're trying to help is suddenly cheery again despite the fact that their best friend is in a coma and their dog died. Also, if you're not feeling your character when it's your turn to post - don't post! Wait until you have the right inspiration to post so your role play doesn't become slow and monotonous.

4. God-Modding : It's when you control someone else's character without their permission. I emphasize without permission because there are some instances when two RPers will converse over PM or IM and decide what happens next so the result of an attack might be fully written out (execution and effect) by a single person. However, when you do it without permission people get severely pissed off. Never write what someone elses character is going to do. You're free to restate what another character has already done but nothing that hasn't been ok'd or stated by the character's owner. If you need a better explanation I'll be happy to give examples.

5. Power Playing : This happens when a character is severely stronger than the other characters in an RP. Essentially, you have a person who is unbeatable no matter what the others in the RP do. This can come about simply by having a more developed character or more often it's because someone wanted to throw a gazillion powers on their character. Don't make god-like characters unless you have a good reason for them being that way. If it's a brand new character then they shouldn't have a lot of nifty things or powers. Develop them through RP! You made an demon character? Cool. It should only have a few abilities. RP with it and have it go through experiences that make it stronger. If you keep with one character for a long time and it gets really strong, great! People won't be able to b***h at you for it. But if an uber-strong dude just shows up, your likely to get booted.

6. Meta-Gaming : Giving your character knowledge that you know but they shouldn't. Basically, if your character is a rookie fighter that's going up against a new enemy they've never seen before, or even an experienced fighter against an enemy they've never seen before, they shouldn't know how to kill it just because you, the RPer, looked it up online. This also applies to PvP. If my character has a weakness to ice and has never told anyone, then your character doesn't know my weakness and wouldn't know to use ice (if they could). Which also brings about the other aspect which ties in very closely with God-Modding and Power Playing as well. Don't start giving your character abilities and powers that aren't listed in their profile just because you want to have them or your losing. It's lame. If you made an inadequate character that you don't like, let them die or simply leave and make a new one.

If I think of more helpful tips I'll update this post.

These are some very good points, people, and I agree. In the case of literacy, although it may be, at times, hard to post more than a few base sentences, try to post more than this. There's always some way to elaborate.

Grammar is important, too.

Grammar is very important, haha. Using bigger words, like 'cogitate' instead of 'think,' will also make you sound smarter. As for post order, sometimes people don't post when they should, and their character is more or less forgotten in the scene- or the roleplay won't be able to continue at all. So if it has been a while, then you might have to move on.
