ok..just say i was in a conversation with a native japanese dude..and i wanted to say " that was back when i was first learning japanese"..how would i say that??? please help

I'm not totally certain on that one, but I think it would go like this:
それは日本語を勉強始めたところでした。
それはにほんごをべんきょうはじめたところでした。
Sore ha nihongo wo benkyou hajimeta tokoro deshita.
