Editors Roundtable: Who Should Philadelphia Union Select In The Expansion Draft?
Goal.com
Shane Evans: Who will Philadelphia Union select in the expansion draft?
Luis Bueno: There should be two no-brainer picks: Bobby Convey and Amado Guevara. Convey's a local guy and Guevara is a former MVP and a good player to have on the team; unless that team is run by Preki of course.
Evans:I agree, when the Gold Cup was in Philly…the majority of the fans in the stadium: Honduran.
Bueno: Guevara will be gone for the World Cup but he could still form a solid part of the puzzle right off the bat.
Evans: And his passion and fire will be perfect for this city.
Zac Lee Rigg: Haven't seen much from Convey that I like recently, but the local kid and he's a former international, you've got to take him.
Allen Ramsey: By that logic you have to take Chris Albright as well. But like Convey, not much to see from him recently.
Rigg: Guevara is genius, love watching that guy. Not many better in this league to build a slick team around.
Evans: Yeah, that worries me that neither (Convey & Albright) have done a whole lot of late.
Bueno: I thought of Albright too but he barely played because of injury. Can he be ready to play in 2010? Might be a big risk, but it's probably one worth taking for the same reasons as Convey.
Evans: What about up top? I think Alan Gordon and Alejandro Moreno are two great choices. [Peter] Nowak loves tireless players, Moreno is it.
Rigg: Huge dearth of attackers in this draft. Only one I like is John Wolyniec.
Bueno: Moreno, yeah. I agree with him. Not sure Gordon would work as an everyday, we-need-him-to-score right away forward.
Ramsey: There's two from Columbus that might be worth a look. I like the idea of Moreno and certainly Jason Garey.
Rigg: True, but from Columbus I much prefer one of the fullbacks. Not a striker who can't score.
Bueno: Moreno is a solid guy, won a Cup, has been around the league and is just a hard worker. Good locker room guy too. You need those players.
Ramsey: What about the guys from the Galaxy? Do you take a shot on Aleko? [Eskandarian]
Rigg: [Todd] Dunivant is a quality fullback in this league and Saunders about the best backup you'll get. Don't like Eskandarian or Gordon at all really, due to injury and inability to score, respectively.
Evans: Why not some leadership? Chris Klein and Eddie Lewis are on the list, though a tad on the old side.
Bueno:With older guys, you have to consider their families, if they have families. Will they want to move their families to a new city, probably for one or two years? Or will they just retire instead of doing that?
Rigg: That's why Pat Onstad is available. Speaking of, I like Mike Chabala a whole lot from Houston.
Bueno: Kevin Hartman is an interesting name, but he might not be willing to move at all.
Kyle McCarthy: You're talking names. Think about trade value. Most of these guys will probably get ferried somewhere else.
Bueno: That didn't work well for Toronto.
McCarthy: It should work better this time. There are some young players that could be helpful to some teams. Jordan Harvey from Colorado's a good player.
Bueno: Seattle did well to get some productive guys in the draft last year, Nate Jaqua, James Riley, Brad Evans. There's some potential for Philly to do the same.
Rigg: I think both Mexicans on Chivas (Mariano Trujillo and Eduardo Lillingston) are handy players, but their value decreases when they leave that club. So I'd go with Shavar [Thomas] from that team too. Anyone Philly desperately needs to pick up in this draft or rue it, Kyle?
McCarthy: There's no Brad Evans in this draft, if that's what you're asking
Evans: You take Convey because of the name and that he's a Philly boy. That's it, in my opinion.
McCarthy: Perhaps. it's going to depend on whether he'll rework his deal. San Jose is praying Philly takes him.
Rigg: I'm interested to see who Philly gambles on at the end of his contract, this year's Parke if you will. [Chris] Rolfe and [Yura] Movsisyan are gone, but in that off chance [Gonzalo] Segares or [Ricardo] Clark come back with their tails between their legs, that's a huge pickup.
Bueno:That would be a steal for them, but they could potentially gain nothing. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go after one of those kinds of players. Who else looks attractive from Chicago, for instance?
McCarthy: Yeah, I don't know why Chicago would leave Segares exposed
Bueno: At least with Houston there's someone else to consider besides Clark.
Rigg: After Segares you've got … Calen Carr. Nobody. You either pick Segares or you skip the Fire.
Evans: Honestly, having players to wear the shirts is big enough for me. Took long enough…
