This project results mainly from the fact that I think technicolor elves are fun. I have very little idea where it's going, but I wanted a project that I could post here from start to finish -- assuming there is a finish -- so I'm picking up an old character idea and building a world from there.
The North Star Project is named after an in-world moniker for "the chosen one." Yeah, I know the whole chosen one thing is as overdone as can be, but it's FUN, dangit.
I know my main character is going to be a dark elf of some sort, so I'll start with that "race." Better yet, I'll start with the origin of the "races" inworld.
About ten thousand years ago, the Ancients got bored. Really, really bored. Due to their immense psychic abilities, they were bored not just individually, but collectively. In fact, they were so bored that they decided to reboot sentient existence on their world by reshaping themselves as various new races and erasing their memories, and by destroying their technology so that their descendants could rebuild civilization, hopefully in a less boring manner. As you can see, they were really frakking bored.
Thus were born the races of world-I-really-should-name. There were three great races -- elves, dwarves, and selkie -- each with enormous internal variation. Humans, who form a slight majority in most of the world, are Ancients with their latent psychomagical abilities so muted as to be non-existent in most individuals. There are also great numbers of lesser races, some of them consisting of only a few individuals, such as the thinking crystals who spend their time in meditation and don't particularly care about what happens to them. (Note: weapons made out of thinking crystal: schizo sword?)
More later.
