Prologue


A slight fog settled into a valley still under the blanket of night. Tall mountains stood high, as if to shelter the valley and all its inhabitants, but nothing stirred, not even the wind to lift the fog or chill in the air.

Within a a hollow protected by cliffs, a dark ginger and white tom emerged from a protective bramble den. His amber eyes seemed tired and troubled. He scarcely seemed to have enough strength to lift his head as he glanced around the clearing.

Two toms waited for him in the center of the clearing, both with anxious looks in their eyes. One, a large solid gray tom, and the other, a smaller black and white tom. He blinked, taking a deep breath, and padding over to them.

"They're fine," he mewed hesitantly.

"And the kits?" The gray tom demanded.

The dark ginger tom lowered his gaze, "Nightleaf gave birth to two healthy she-cats."

"And Poppypelt?" The gray tom asked.

"She-her kit would have been a tom, if he hadn't been born dead." He meowed, flinching away as the gray tom let out a breath of dispair. The ginger and white tom swallowed adding, "You should have known she'd have trouble after the accident. This is her first and last kit."

"Don't tell me things I don't want to hear," the gray tom murmured.

"Then don't listen," all three toms looked up as a black tom padded past them with a kit in his mouth. He pushed his way into the bramble den, then emerged without the kit.

"Where did you get that kit?" The black and white tom demanded.

"It shouldn't matter so long as Poppypelt never notices the difference." He muttered. The black and white tom bristled, but the gray tom signaled for him to sit.

"I thank-you," He meowed to the black tom.

"I don't expect debts or favors." The black tom responded coldly, turning away and padding over to another den, leaving the toms alone in the clearing.
