Overview of the Class:

In this class you have the opportunity to learn about what made Japan tick back in the feudal era. We will be talking about figures such as Tokugawa and Ieyasu. Details will be given to how clothing showed rank and status as well. We'll take note of how the class structure is set up, and what was included in family life. A major topic we'll discuss is Japan's golden age, as well as the warring states that were there as well. All this and more will be at your disposal should you choose to learn from me with others.

I will do my very best to keep the lessons fun and interesting. I know just how awful it can be to sit through some boring lecture, so I'll try and add some flare to what I teach. There will be projects to peak your interest, as well as notes to record for later use. Remember, I will not give you anything that I won't do myself. That means if I'm too lazy to be bothered to do it, then I'm not going to make you motivated to do it either. This means very few, if any, essays. And if you are given one, it will probably be short and opinionated. Opinions are fun!

I will be giving a final and a midterm to this class. That means that you should not get rid of your notes. You will need them to study from later. I am considering exemption from the final if you can score rather good grades for each lesson. Don't worry though; one off lesson won't deter your chances. We aren't perfect and we sure as hell aren't robots. At least, I know I'm not.

During lessons, if you are confused then post your questions in this thread. I will answer anything you need help on. I am ready and willing to assist you in any way that you need. That?s what I'm here for. I was given a job and I plan on fulfilling it to my best efforts. Make me work for what I earn. There are no stupid questions. Never feel embarrassed about asking either. It's how you inquire and learn.

That is pretty much it. If you have any questions about this class in general (not the lesson taking place at the current time), feel free to PM me. Please check the FAQ before asking though, because your question might already be answered.

What the course will cover:

Arts and Literature
Clothing Styles
Daily Life
Epic Battles
Family Honor
Family Structure
Geishas
Important Figures
International Encounters
Origins of Language
Religions
Roles of Classes
Social Structure
Traditions

These lessons are listed in no particular order, but are alphabetized instead. Some of them may be combined into one because they are closely related. Please remember that this is simply for a learning experience, not to convert you into anything (considering I will be talking about their religions). I am not teaching the Japanese language to you in any way, shape, or form. I will be talking about where it came from and how it was created briefly though. If you'd like to learn the language, please see Japanese 101.

Grading System:

This is how everything will be graded, and what percentile of the total grade it will cover. Some of the ways might seem harsh, but please keep in mind that I have a touch of OC (obsessive compulsive) when it comes to written work. I promise you that I will tone it down as much as possible.

-Tests and Quizzes: These will be graded on the correctness of an answer. Spelling is only looked at if I give you a word bank. Because honestly if you cannot spell a word sitting in front of you we have some problems to address.

-Homework: You must have the homework in by the assigned time, because after that points will be docked. If for some reason you are unable to accomplish the task on time, then speak with me. I prefer forewarning to after the fact, but sometimes the unpredictable happens. Never know when your brother is going to blame the broken window on you and get you grounded.

-Projects: Grammar and spelling will be keyed in on intensely for these. You will have plenty of time to complete them, so it shouldn't be a problem. Creativity, but not artistic skills, is taken into account for this. That is why I will ask for rough ideas each time. We aren't all artists, so I won't get it into my head that we are.

-Essays: Effective use of knowledge, and grammar and spelling are taken into account. If you blabber on about the Phantom of the Opera when I want to know what you think of Shintoism, I'm going to have to fail you no matter how awesome the Phantom looks in his mask.

-Participation: Posting and commenting on the lessons will earn you participation points. And participation will count for a good chunk because I need to know that you're not sleeping on me (haha...). I won't crack down incredibly hard on this, but someone who posts about every lesson compared to someone who only turns in homework and tests will get the better grade.
