Appearance Description
Kaien is bright-eyed and youthful, albeit strangely grizzled from his training regime. The tell-tale signs of difficult training show in the cuts and bruises that cover nearly his entire body, most prominent along his forearms, hands, and feet. Although Kaien is frequently covered with fresh medical wrapping he's just as likely to be seen without, the lot of which is hidden beneath a long, white cotton coat gifted to him by his father some years ago. It as well bears the scars of his training, showing frayed seams that require almost constant repair. Oddly enough, Kaien wears no footwear.
Personality
Hopelessly optimistic. Kaien has a hard time seeing the world in a negative light, often far too caught up in his own training to consider anything else. His hard work and determination show in everything he sets his mind to, and he often makes friends--and enemies--quickly for it under the right circumstance. To those who let him be he seems almost cold and disinterested, unapproachable; a few moments of conversation can often reverse this first impression.
History
Kaien grew among the peaks of the country of Lightning for as far back as he can remember. His father, Shokaku Hoken, would often regale him with tales of his infant exploits: many nights spent searching for the boy as he toddled off into the wilderness. Kaien proved surprisingly resilient despite his many accidents and disappearing acts, and as he grew it became apparent--if only to his father--that he was capable of great things.
Hoken was head of a rather obscure school based out of Kumogakure who taught the principal techniques of Taijutsu to those who sought to learn. Though he was not well known his school was often regarded in an honorable light within the village, and oftentimes academy students would be sent to him if they were particularly lacking in discipline. Hoken served the Raikage admirably during his younger years in this fashion. However, once his wife was with child--and with the twilight of his days steadily approaching--Hoken gracefully stepped down as a mentor and retired from his glory days forever. The birth was not an easy one, and Hoken's wife died during delivery.
Kaien was raised by his father and gravitated toward academy life even at a young age, goaded on by engaging stories of heroism and honor. Hoken eventually took to teaching him with a zeal not lost to age, and within him he sowed the seeds of his harsh training: discipline, respect, and unwavering courage. It was no small wonder that Kaien's dexterity and physical strength, as well as his intense, focused approach to chakra control, were far more developed than his peers. He did not graduate quickly, however, for despite his strengths he was miserable at applying his talents to anything but Taijutsu; while he was adept at molding his chakra he had an unconscious habit of using far too much, and produced volatile, dangerous versions of otherwise mundane jutsu. What to him was a tiny fraction of his chakra was to others a great ocean, unleashed in proportion to his equally great stamina. Kaien, like his father, had a habit of overdoing things and failed many of his tests for this reason.
When at last he conquered his weakness--to a degree--and graduated the academy at age twelve the occasion quickly grew bittersweet. His father did not attend.
Heartbroken, and with few friends from his many evenings spent training with his father, Kaien eventually returned home to find that his father had left without a word, leaving behind only a journal containing his final teachings. Alone and angry, he spent days perusing the book, searching for something--anything--that might hint toward his whereabouts. He found nothing but a regime and a single word scribed upon the cover:
"Rebuild."
He didn't understand why his father had left, though he thought back on the many stories of children left to their own designs in a harsh, unforgiving world. His rage instead gave way into purpose. He would rebuild; he would lead his father's school into a new generation, this he promised himself.

Type: Taijutsu
The core of the Shokaku style. Taiken requires an impressive amount of chakra control to execute perfectly, but the simplest variations can be accomplished with only personal stamina. Taiken, or "Great Circle", is a dexterous, acrobatic style that revolves around building the momentum of the body to execute precision strikes of varying power, beginning with deceptively slow, obvious patterns to fool the lesser skilled. The user moves quickly and often, utilizing full body spins and sudden stops and starts in motion. The stops are often accompanied with expulsions of chakra, whether the user's personal element is utilized or the latent attributes of the human body are empowered. Those who encounter it are often fooled into believing the individual strikes are very weak: a misconception that can have dire consequences.

Hoken's Journal: a thick, leather-bound book containing the collective teachings of the Shokaku clan. It contains mostly Taijutsu theory and Taiken principals, but the coded, cryptic pages found at the rear of the book remain something of a mystery to Kaien. Within it diagrams of the chakra pathways are explained, as well as less-common knowledge including the Hachimontonkou and coded Fuuinjutsu, most of which Kaien is either loathe to study or oblivious of.

Note: Although none of the Shokaku teachings are technically blood-related and therefore not a Kekkai Genkai, I chose to reflect his specialization and specific training by taking the Kekkai Genkai progression as a handicap.
