Next Friday I am having a date-night with my beau. I am looking for some easy Asian (preferably Japanese) recipes. The only request that I make, is that you have tried them yourself... either by making or tasting.

~ Tempura <3 ~

Tempura Is REALLY Easy... but Can Take a While Depending On How Much You Want To Cook

and it's not healthy for you at all -_-;;;

BONELESS Meat:: (We mostly use pork and chicken, but we have tried all of these)
Pork
Chicken
Beef
Shrimp

Favorite Vegetables:: (we use these)
Onions
White Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes
Eggplant (tried it once... it was.... ok.. not bad... but not my fave... if you like eggplant its worth a shot)
-these are all we tried, but you can experiment with veggies you like or don't like-

You will need::
deep frying grease of some sort - we use the low fat vegetable shortening stuff
Tempura Batter (see below)
trays to set the cooked food on (we use several baking sheets and line them with thick layers of newspaper)
Tongs - or something to pull stuff out of hot grease. we use chopsticks
And the ingredients in the recipes below <3

once you make the batter and the grease is heated up and ready for deep frying, take your prepared ingredients and generously coat them in the batter. Once coated, place in grease until crispy golden brown.

*cooking time will vary based on heat and amount of batter on coating and size/thickness of object. experiment to see what fully cooks your meat without burning the crispy part.

Cook white rice to serve with the tempura. We also make a citrus soy sauce (see below)

A TIP FROM OUR EXPERIENCE!!!
Once the foods are cooked, they will look almost identical. We cut ours in different shapes.
One meat is small thick circles; The other small thick cubes (we only cook two meats in one meal)
Onions are large not thin, but not thick large circles
Sweet Potatoes are laid side-ways and sliced in circles
White potatoes are sliced long ways.

We also generally keep meat and onions on two trays and potatoes and the other meat on two trays.

Tempura Batter Recipe::
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
2/3 cup ice water
Yellow food coloring (optional)
Oil for deep frying

Citrus Soy Sauce::
Well actually, we just mix soy sauce and lemon juice together until we hit right where we like it (start small and keep adding more until it tastes like soy sauce with a bit of citrus tang to it... don't over power either one though)

Or you can just use regular soy sauce or sweet and sour sauce.

You can make sushi at home too.
It's really easy and can use just about whatever you want in them.

I've done chicken and vegetables and beef and vegetables sushi before (obviously I cooked the beef and chicken before putting it in the sushi roll). I hate sea food so I figured just substitute the meat. It tasted pretty good =3 you can buy the seaweed sheets in asian markets and (I THINK) walmart - though I might be wrong... at any rate, asian markets will definitely have it.

you can also try making Onigiri =3

rice balls. they're pretty impossible to screw up and are fun to play with. =3

bot of these can easily be looked up online... just about any recipe we give you will need to be tampered with to your liking. It just takes practice and experience =3

I'm sorry I don't have any myself... I don't cook foreign foods all that often -_-;

Haha, those are hit and miss depending on the person ^^;; I don't like them and can only eat one every once in a while. After 3 bites it tastes weird and the texture is gross XP

hence the "hit and miss" XD

I wasn't able to ask yesterday. But I'll ask today if I can remember.

But, also, Otaku is vegetarian, so there wasn't a lot on tempura night she could eat XD potatoes, onions and the bean paste things and rice

it's like a pastey grainy texture inside a dumpling-like textured cake thing... they're... different.

I know it's a little late now... But if you have access to such things, you could always go for buying some soba or udon.

Oh! And if you have access to curry rue, you could make curry... Just through some potatoes and carrots and stuff in there.

IT WORKED! I recommend everyone try this recipe. But I have an additional note... It get a crispier "shell" take the vegetables, dip in water, then flour, then the batter, and then into the oil. Since meat and seafood already have some water, just dip in flour and then try.

P.S. Use canola oil.
