I considered just talking about fanfiction only in the threads that the fanfiction was about, but... I just was like what the hell, might as well have a big, fictiony orgy right here instead.

I just wanted to let everybody know that I read a Star Trek fic where Kirk was a MERMAID. Bones was a Doctor, but he lived in like the 13th century or something, idk, he liked to hang out with monks and garden and stuff. I read it because an artist I really like drew FOUR pages of art for it, and then highly recommended it on top of that.
IT WAS SO FREAKING WEIRD. I was very, very weirded out and now kind of regret that I read it. ._. It's not that it was poorly written, because it wasn't at all, but it was just... it squicked me, okay? And the end was CHEESY AS HELL, I FELT REALLY JIPPED. UGH. And still seriously squicked.
Anyway now I'm reading some weird fantasy AU that's also set way back in the day, but I'm hoping there's no mermaids in this one. Wish me luck!

I was reading a rant on lj the other day that a girl wrote in her journal about how "slash" shouldn't be listed as a warning on fanfics. It's pretty given in certain communities that slash is inherent, and to warn against it is redundant and falls into the social standard that a homosexual relationship is something to guard against. I found it an interesting post, so i went through my friend list to see if i could find any fics with that as a warning. Mostly i just found warning for NSFW, and occasionally warnings for het on yaoi_daily, which i thought was kind of funny.
Just food for thought...

Heeeyyy, no mermaids, and I actually kind of really like it, even though I've never read whatever the books are that ST was being crossed with. Movie!fic makes me mad, though, mostly because people write Kirk as such a GIRL. And I'm always pissed that Bones didn't get his blue eyes in the movie either. It was travesty!

JIM. YOU NEED TO GO RESCUE MCCOY ALREADY, OKAY?! GOSH. I'M FREAKING OUT OVER HERE. THE LAST CHAPTER WAS REALLY SAD, AND HE NEEDS A FREAKING HUG, OKAY?! Spock can come too.
Also Scotty needs to have a show down ultimate battle with his evil self. Because that sounds awesome.
Okay, the first sentence made me want to punch babies. MONTHS?! MONTHS. WHAT THE HELL. My heart just broke even more. AUGH. /end freak out. for now.

So I'm reading this Star Trek book by SD Perry, and I think it SORT of qualifies as fanfiction, even though it's published. Anyway McCoy is dying of a horrible disease, as usual. WHY DOES EVERYBODY LOVE PICKING ON HIM ALL THE TIME.

Vengeful Elegance Fan fictions bug me. I don't know why. Especially the ones that have characters that are like mortal enemies falling in love and stuff like that.
Oh man, those are the best kind! I think fanfiction is a good venue for fans to, well, fantasize about what they want the characters to do. Like, for example, Draco and Harry to have hot gay sex in a dark classroom. (not my fantasy, just an example). And often fanfiction is a good excuse for plotless porn. But then again, i have a tendency to read the stuff that is purposefully plotless. I know there are a lot of very involved fanfics out there that go far into the depths of the psyche of the character and whatnot...

I used Harry and Draco as an example, because they are so popular in the fanfiction world of mortal enemies turned fatal lovers. Not my personal favorite. I prefer me some Remus/Sirius if i'm going Harry Potter fanfic, because that is totally canon. Rowling just didn't want to write the gory details herself. xp

Right now I ship Mirrorverse!Spock with normal McCoy... I don't know, I just can't get over what happened between the two of them in that episode. It broke my little fangirl brain.
But yeah, lately I've been reading really long fanfics. I LOVE AU fanfics particularly-- putting your favorite characters into some ridiculous setting is so much fun its not even funny. Star Trek AU Highschool fics kill me, especially the idea of Bones having to save freshman Chekov from being stuffed into lockers.
So yeah, AU has always been my favorite kind of fanfic, Jen. I can understand where you're coming from, I hate Draco and Harry too, a lot, but there's SO MUCH out there, you just have to find your niche.

Right now I'm reading a very poorly written Highschool AU that is just entertaining enough to keep me from hulk smashing the writer for being made of fail. In other news, Sulu ran over Chekov with his car, and I laughed forever.
However, I will not hesitate to admit that I hate reboot-based fanfiction. I think Scotty and Bones are the only things keeping me with this one, really, because a lot of people are really, really, really bad at writing Spock and Kirk. They think that using big words for Spock or having Jim tramp around is enough for them to be in character, which is just stupid. The movie was great and all, but the people who haven't seen the show really don't understand their personalities at /all/.
