A small grove of trees that circles around a small clearing. Some of surrounding clearing is blackened with magical explosions. The Blasted Grove is home to an abundance of wild magic, the natural magic existing throughout the lands unbound by any spells. This magic is the natural magic that shaped the majority of the world during it's first metamorphosis of it's birth.

Myles turns and pays a coin to the sky gondolier that brought him to the Blasted Grove, his favorite place to watch the sunset from. It's a good place for quiet thought, and something about the grove seems to attract him in some inscrutable and ineffable way.

Yet something tonight is different. Sitting on the outside edge of the ring of trees and watching the sun approaching the horizon, he just can't seem to shake a feeling of restlessness. He stands, shouldering his pack, and slips into the trees. The light of sunset filtering through the trees creates vertical patterns of darkness and rosy glow.

The troubadour walks among the trees, not quite knowing where or why. And then on an impulse he turns. There, among the roots of a tree he had just passed, is a cavity. A hole in the ground just big enough for a man to slip through. He sets his pack on the ground, kneels, and inspects it. A cool, gentle draft rises from it, there must be another opening.

Still not quite knowing why, he drops into the cave, finding a space big enough to kneel in and the dark mouth of a small tunnel. He pulls his pack in after him and draws out a length of rope. One end he ties firmly to a thick exposed root, and the other he secures around his waist through the belt loops of his trousers. He may be drawn into unknown darkness, but he still has presence of mind to leave himself a way to find a return path.

As his eyes adjust, he notices that the tunnel calling him is not pitch black. There is a very faint light diffusing along its length that must be from its other opening. Forced to crawl, he makes his way down the tunnel, leaving his pack in the first chamber and letting out the rope behind him as he goes.

As the light gets somewhat brighter and tinged with the glow of sunset, the tunnel gets steeper. Soon he is climbing downward. Then, a foothold comes loose and he plummets. He falls into open air and is stopped short by the rope. He looks down at the ground so very far below, then looks up at the underside of the Grove. And then he notices something that isn't rock. A small straight something wedged in a crevice, the very tip of it catching the light of the setting sun and casting a long shadow across the rock.

He begins his climb back up the rope, and as he reaches the rocks he stretches his arm out, grasps the object firmly, and pulls it free. He slips the foot-long rod into a pocket without bothering to examine it, and begins his return journey to the cave mouth.
