Tic...toc...Tic...toc... A room is a sanctuary. A domain thats blocks out the harsh reality of the outside world. So to is it for this man. Sitting in a chair of luxurious cushion gazing into the fire pit, the man looked every bit the wealthy englishman. An expensive suit decorated with lace cuffs and gold trim, he swirled a glass of wine in his right hand, his sight never leaving the fire. Tic...toc...Tic...toc... The man's eyes flickered to the clock in the corner. It was an old grandfather clock, ticking with the swing of the pendulum. Frankly he didnt know why it was still ticking. He hadnt replaced the batteries nor wound it up in years, but it continued its steady rhythm. A testatment to humanity, or what was left of it. That thought slowly brought him to the present, and just how bad things have gotten in only a few years. Tic...toc...Tic...toc Slowly rising from his chair, he made his way to the only window in the room, gazing at his reflection. His hair was unkept, his face looked haggard and very very old. But it was his eyes that frighten the man more than anything. There was a time where they sparkled an emerald green, like an uncut emerald just plucked from the mine. Now they looked sickly and dark, the eyes of a man that has seen too much in a short time. Then he looked past his reflection to the world outside. Tic...toc...Tic...toc... The world outside was a choatic wasteland of what was once the proud city of New York. Buildings had been toppled over, craters in the roads were located through out the city, and the Statue of Liberty had been broken in half. This scene replayed through the man's mind, as he was there to witness the destruction firsthand. So to was it that every major city fell, across the globe. Every refuge of man that has ever been built had been destroyed, every human erased from their mortal coil. All had fallen, and the man knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was his weakness that brought this about. His one mistake. Tic...toc...Tic...toc... A rattle at the door brought his attention to the couch he had put there, barring the way. It wouldnt have done anything, but he suppose that it being there was a comfort. The door rattled more, the door cracking outward in a shower of splinters. Not too much longer, the man thought, not too much longer at all. Tic...toc...Tic...toc... The door finally gave way, in a explosion of sound and splinters. The couch was shoved out of the way, and a creature stood at the doorway. It wasnt very tall, five feet at the most. Its deformed body made his right side bigger than his left, so it walked with an uneven gait. Its right arm was so large that it had to drag it across the floor. Its one good left eye surveyed the room before seeing the man for the first time. In a burst of speed uncanny to its form, it was across the room and gripped the man in its powerful right arm before he could blink. Tic...toc...Tic...toc... The man looked over the creature, seeing it how it had grown. He remembered bouncing the same creature on his knee, telling it bedtime stories, staying within this very room away from everything and everyone. Just the two of them. He remembered when the creature wanted to see the outside world, and he has denied it quite harshly. That was the first time the creature disobeyed him, and the last he had seen it in many years. Now it was back, and it didnt look too happy to see him. The man stared into the creatures one good eye, a sparkling shade of green, and smiled. "Welcome home my son." Tic...toc...Tic...toc...CRASH...toc................

I liked it! Especially the end, with his son and all. The "tic-tocking" helped add a sort of suspenceful feel to it, and I was also sad for the dad. Overall, I felt it was an emotionally engaging story.

I'm getting a team of buddies together to vote on their favorites, because I know you both and don't want my rating to accidentally come out biased.
