Vampires are everywhere. On our t-shirts, in our hack fiction, in our pop culture, and taped to the back of your teenage daughter's door. The grand entry of the latest corpse-flogging series, the Vampire's Assistant, got me thinking.
Wouldn't it be interesting if the entire vampire craze would revert to its folkloric beginnings? You know, the morbid, gritty tales passed on by whispering in the marketplace, or, in some cases, shouting from outhouse to outhouse.
I am aware that vampires are the oldest-known fantastical creature, appearing in Sumerian society to Hebrew mythology. Those vampires are pretty boring. No, I'm thinking more along the lines of the eastern European early medieval folk stories. They feared the bloodsuckers, and didn't fill the bookstore shelves with three hundred pages of New Moon. The purpose of these tales was to scare not only the children into behaving, but also the particularly "merry" townsfolk.
So what was the folk origin anyway?
The spirits of dead pagans rising were known as "strigoi", and in the early 1800s as "vampirs" (a derivative of the archaic Russian word "upir", meaning "witch"). Male strigoi were believed to feed on corpses and appear as foul-smelling, giant ambulatory bats. The females were known as "alps" and would masquerade as water-nymphs (rusalkas) to seduce young men before feeding on them. No, they did not sparkle, nor was their skin like marble.
Well, now you can see exactly how silly a vampire attending an American high school really is.

Word.
I think the sparkling thing is ridiculous. Stephanie Meyer lost my respect on that one. Oh, and Edward is an a**.

She wrote a book series to capture the zeitgeist. Nothing wrong with that at all, just good business. I'm a little depressed that my peers have a fascination with "hot" vampires. Grotesque night-creatures.

I have nothing against Meyer herself, just her ridiculous plotline. I also wonder: If vampires are all pale white and marble-like, are there any black vampires?

Is anyone else here about ready to vomit, because this twilight thing has got to be the most revolting thing ever. I mean, hey, if you like it, good fro you and all, no offense, but, i don't think vampires should sparkle, and the book are oddly close to the vampire diaries... anyone else notice that? heart

Imagine: Bella's new boyfriend could be Walton the Zombie.
