GAME TIME!

It's time for a CYOA- A choose your own adventure game! If you don't know what those are, basically, you get a prompt and you have some choices to make. Make the right choice and advance... make the wrong choice and... either advance down a DIFFERENT path or get left behind! What will you do? The way this game in particular will work is that I will post a prompt and you will have x amount of time to PM your response to the mule- that way, if you can't be on all the time, you won't necessarily get left behind! In your PM, you can include a short RP response, if you like, and of course in-thread RP is always encouraged! After all, if you look around... you might find things!

And without further ado, the first prompt! (PS: I'm updating stuff now as I type, so all ABs and bids will be up shortly!)

You don't know why, exactly, you decided to come to this clearing, but you're beginning to regret it now. It's dark, it's cold, and there's a very bizarre-looking 'giet in front of you. You've seen mutations before, but this? This is something entirely different. She's said that she's seen one of your own kind enter the swamp she calls home, but not leave it.
For whatever reason, you have decided to believe her. So here you are, on the edge of a large, tree-choked swamp, with a dark-looking creature explaining what has happened.

"...and so I can't place his exact location. I can only assume that he's followed the glow of the foxfire into the bog, and will need rescuing. But... I don't know if he's hurt. And if he is, I will need help. Follow me." Without further ado, she turns on her heel and stalks away into the fen.

A: Follow Irrlicht. She might be scary-looking... but she knows these swamps?
B: Follow... one of THOSE? Are you out of your mind? I'll find him on my own!

You have 24 hours to PM your response to the mule.

CYOA Update woo! Everybody picked A, so I don't have to type out the alternate scenario!
Evelyn Hayden

Samhain followed Irrlicht into the swamps, her logic fighting her the whole way, but that little voice that often got her in so much trouble egged her on. She never could ignore that danger impulse. "W-Where are we headed?" Hell, she probably didn't even know this 'giet. . . Why should she try and help him? But, without any success in fighting that urge for adventure, she pressed on, barely able to keep an eye on the dark figure ahead of her.

Shiningamisgirl
Follow her!? Here I am half way lost and she, of all things has the nerve to ask me to follow her. Shes simply lucky she's pretty, gah I'm such a sucker for the ladies...Tall women, short women, my own species or not kinda women! -Cer'val snickered to himself even as he mused within his own thoughts..
The female must have thought him strong to invite him along to help her out, and afterall two heads were better then one right? Two tails certainly, and oh what a tail she had, creepy or not she was hot!

Obviously, cerval the hopeless ladys man he believes he is..chooses... to follow Irrlicht. She might be scary-looking... but she knows these swamps?

Milorganite
Kio shakes his head and shrugs. An easy-going 'giet, fear had never managed to wrap fingers around his heart. It wasn't a safe way to live; it was quite dangerous, more often than not, but it hadn't gotten him into serious trouble yet. He steps after the dimly-colored female, not caring for consequences.

Teigra

The scarred female glanced from the strange-looking 'giet then back towards the bog once more, indecision shining in her good eye. Should she? Still, if another 'giet needed help, she wasn't going to be selfish and go about her own pleasant way. And the bog wasn't exactly the most familiar ground beneath her paws.

"Hold up! I'm coming!" Sheelah called, bounding after the odd creature.

Rev is following, too, so the list who can continue are Reverie Rose, Evelyn Hayden, Teigra, Milorganite, and Shinigamisgirl. You have until 11:00 PM EST tomorrow (Saturday) night to get the next prompt in!

Irrlicht smiles grimly as she leads the 'giets into the swamps. Owls hoot and frogs croak, and the moon doesn't seem to glow here as brightly as it does elsewhere. All the light comes from eerily glowing fungus, fungus that seems to spring up where the Di'taki steps. "You're a brave bunch," she says. "And the stars will reward you." She leads you to what appears to be a stagnant, pungent stretch of water. Something moves beneath the dark surface, and the quick glimmer of light tells you that the pond at least has some fish in it. Irrlicht turns back to address the party. "The quickest way through this patch here is to swim, but if you prefer to do differently, or the mud and cold do not appeal to you, walking around is quite possible. I will lead those who wish to walk; the terrain is unkind to those who do not know it.

A: I'll swim across! The quicker we get into the swamp, the better! Sure, it's cold, but my fur is thick. What's the worst that could happen?
B: I'll walk. It's safer than swimming, and that water is freezing. If I'm cold and wet, I won't have as much endurance as I do now.

Looking at the water...Akua frowned. He didn't much like the thought of getting wet...after all, the cold could kill couldn't it? Turning to the female, he nodded to her. "I will follow you around." he said. He trusted her. Why? He had no idea. He wasn't certain why he trusted her but he had a feeling she wouldn't fail him. So he put his faith in her. And a little detour wouldn't be of any harm now would it?

Evelyn Hayden
Samhain looked uneasily at the water, part of her wanted to swim across, but the idea of being in these swamps even for a short amount of time mad her even more uneasy, no, she would rather stay with the dark stranger rather than try to swim across without her guidance. "Ummm, I'm thinkin I'd rather walk. . . I think I'd just feel safer."

Teigra
Sheelah's good eye darted towards the movement in the water, but her curiosity was distracted as she mis-planted a paw on one of those glowing fungi. Eww, that...did not feel pleasant. She was quick to try and wipe the glowing mush off on a sparse tuft of grass, trying not to look as childishly disgusted as she might have felt for a moment.

Her attention back on their...'leader's' words, she frowned once more at the dark water. Normally, she wouldn't shy away from a mere swim, however, given the current setting...? There was no way to tell what might be lurking beneath the dark surface. This place was creepy enough as it was. She could just picture something unseen, dragging her down...

Shuddering slightly, Sheelah attempted to hide her thoughts from the others. "I'll walk," she muttered, taking a few steps along the shoreline before pausing to wait for Irrlicht to lead.

Milorganite
Without thinking, Kio jumped right into the swampy water. He had lived by the ocean his whole life, and was a very strong swimmer. Besides, what could go wrong? It was just water, right? Might muss his coat a little, sure, but he wasn't that vain.

Irrlicht led the 'giets who chose to follow her safely around the borders of the lake. She noticed that the spotted male chose to swim. Fair enough. There were worse things in deeper waters, and had it not been safe, she would not have allowed them the option of swimming. After a brief moment of reconnaissance with the party, she noticed that one had remained behind. Ah, well. It wouldn't do to have those who were not truly brave of heart with her. She led the party through a twisty path through the stunted trees, the fungi the only source of light. "He must have come this way; it's the only way out of there..." she mutters, just loudly enough for all to hear her. The path gets narrower and narrower... until it opens up into a clearing. The clearing has obviously been the site of a recent fight; the earth is packed down, the trees have claw marks in them, and there are two sets of tracks leaving in opposite directions. Both combatants survived, but which one, if either, of them is the missing 'giet? One set of tracks is bloody, while the other is staggered, as if the wounded walker had a gammy leg. All who are curious can sniff the tracks, but the odor of the swamps has made tracking too difficult. Also, the smell of the missing 'giet is unknown.

However, all that is described is not all that was seen.
Those who walked saw a tattered clump of green fur snagged on a branch.
Those who swam saw bloody black feathers illuminated in the moonlight.
All members of the party see this in the clearing:
User Image

A few long, tangled hairs that came from someone's mane. Closer inspection reveals them to be bloodied. However, it is unknown if they came from the missing 'giet, his assailant, or somebody else entirely.

With the knowledge of the tracks in mind, Irrlicht turns to the party. "You know your kind better than I do. Which tracks should be followed?

A: The bloody tracks. If it is him, and he's hurt badly enough to leave bloody tracks, we need to find him quick... before something else does!
B: The staggering tracks. Maybe the one who left the bloody tracks attacked him, and if that's the case, these staggering tracks are left by somebody with a broken leg. He's a moving target if that's the case!

All responses are due at 11 PM EST tomorrow!

Having paused to sniff at the torn fur caught on a branch, Sheelah trotted to catch up with the group in the clearing. The signs of battle were clear to read, and the female hesitated before taking a step into the clearing to investigate. She didn't figure she'd get much information from scents, given the strong, pervading odor of the swamp...however, she'd try nonetheless. Unfortunately, she got little other than bog stench...and a slight coppery scent from the bloody prints. Likely, the others could see the blood easier than smell it, but she relied more on her other senses which had strengthened since she'd lost the use of one eye.

One pair of prints belonging to an injured, bleeding 'giet, the other to one with a limp or wound of some sort, but not necessarily new. It could be an old wound. There wasn't much information to go on really.

"The bloody tracks indicate a recent wound. The owner will likely be easier to track and quicker to find. The other could be an older wound; doesn't mean we'll be able to catch up as quickly. I say we follow the bloody prints," she spoke up, for the first time indicating that she knew more of hunting and tracking...or maybe just injuries, than indicated by her appearance.

Milorganite
Kio just can't image a 'Giet being injured in battle and then walking deeper into the jungle for help, dragging such an obvious trail behind him. No, a 'Giet with an injured leg would stay where he was, instead of exhausting himself more. Besides, what if those bloodied feathers were that 'Giet's blood, and the black bird some companion to whatever attacked it? He set off down the bloodied trail.

---
Reverie Rose

Akua frowned as the other male chose to swim. Show off. Well it didn't much matter to him anyways. He stopped however, seeing the signs of a fight. "God, what the hell..." he said as he looked around...how awful! The scent of blood reached his nose as he scrunched up his nose. He looked at the tracks...hearing the question the bat female asked. "I think...out kind wouldn't go down that easily. We are a tough species, so the bloody one...must be the attacker. I say we go after the staggering one." He said as he turned in that direction. He just hoped he didn't just leave the missing 'giet to die...

Evelyn Hayden
Samhain examined both sets of tracks, sniffing at the ground but not having any success at identifying anything familiar. She didn't know why, but the idea of following the bloody tracks just felt wrong. She turned to the stranger and said, "I think we should follow the staggering tracks." She wasn't sure why, but that just seemed like the better idea.

Two and two, and both sets of tracks seemed viable options. A choice had to be made... or did it? Irrlicht thought for a moment. "If he's bleeding badly enough to leave tracks like this, he can't be moved. If he's got a broken leg, however, we'll need to move him and move him fast. We will split up. You two, follow the bloody tracks. Take these," she says, selecting two thick sticks and coating them with the glowing fungus. "They'll be your light. And they won't go out. Better than fire." She turns to the two who want to follow the staggered tracks. "I will go with you. If he's got a fractured leg, we'll need more than two to carry him, most likely." Looking again at the others, she spoke in grave tones. "If you find him, do not try to move him. He will need something to staunch the flow of blood, special weeds that can only be found in the deep swamps. I know where they are, but you do not. If you find him, I want you to call out as loudly as you can; perhaps howl? If you reach the end of the tracks and there is nothing, come back here and wait. We will examine the staggering tracks and do the same. If there is nothing, we will return here. It is imperative that you do not leave this area if you return! There are... things... that lurk in these swamps, things which you do not want to face without a swamp-dweller's help." Ducking to the ground again, she swaths three more thick sticks with the fungus and nudges them over to her group. "Remember, if you find him... don't move." With that, and and a motion with her shoulder, the strange black-eyed creature sets off, leading her party down the staggered tracks while the others head down the bloody trail.

For those who followed the blood:
As the two 'giets follow the bloody trail of pawprints, they are struck with an eerie feeling; it very much feels like something, or someone, is watching them, as if the very trees have eyes. Eventually, they exit the stand of scrubby trees that they'd been picking their way through and come out into an open patch of boggy ground that smells strongly of... something unfamiliar and dark, as well as the stench of old blood. Here the ground is very, very soft, too soft to hold footprints. In the glow of the fungus, something black and shiny on the ground is illuminated. A closer look reveals more bloody black feathers, identical to the ones Kio had seen on the water. Looking ahead, it seems that the feathers lead somewhere... but where? One's first instinct might be to follow this trail, but one also must ask oneself if this swamp holds more mysteries to be illuminated in the bioluminescent glow of Irrlicht's foxfire.

A: Look for more clues, something doesn't seem right.
B: Follow the trail of feathers. Something does not seem right.

For those who followed the staggered tracks:

Irrlicht leads the group out of the stand of trees and onto a wide patch of basically empty ground. Snagged on one of the last trees as they exit the stand are more identical hairs to the ones found before. These, too, are bloodied, and the blood is still wet. Beyond a bit of marshy ground, a pond glimmers in the distance. No more footprints can be seen; for the ground is too wet to hold them; however, as Irrlicht leads the group towards the pond, she trips on... a hole. A big hole. A sinkhole, one that leads into what is likely a system of caves formed by the acidic swampwater leeching down into the limestone over the years. Picking herself up, she stares down at the muddy sinkhole, its narrow mouth yawning into what looks like a wider tunnel in the darknes. "It seems we have a choice now," she rumbles. "What will we do?"

A: Search the sinkhole. Nothing with a broken leg is going to swim in THESE waters.
B: Swim across the pond. That is a creepy cave, and maybe he made it to the other side somehow.

All answers are due at 11 PM EST tomorrow, but if I get them all before that, I'll update sooner!

Gripping the glowing stick between her teeth, Sheelah surveyed the open area, taking a step to test the ground, then pulling her paw back with a growl. She felt wary of treading on the soft, boggy ground, though not as wary as she felt just walking through the swamp in general. She could feel someone watching her...even if she couldn't see or smell them, not among the bog's stench.

With all caution, Sheelah neared some of the bloodied, black feathers, gingerly nudging them about with her paw. Was there more information to be found here? Or should they pursue the trail of feathers, now that the pawprints had faded? She glanced at her new 'companion' before setting her stick down to speak.

"They may gain some ground on us, but the feathers aren't going anywhere. I say we take a look around here first, make sure we don't miss anything important before moving on. Wouldn't go to miss a clue and get ourselves lost because of it. It'll only take a few minutes and we can always get moving again after that."
Milorganite

Kio was glad the eyeless creature was leaving the two who followed the bloody path. It wasn't that he minded her, just that the whole eyeless thing gave him the willies. He accepted the glowing stick gingerly. Hopefully that stuff didn't stain. Or poison.

Stay where you are? If only the lost 'Giet had headed that advice.

Stepping into the forest, he noted the trail of feathers. But the feathers didn't belong to a 'Giet. 'Giet's didn't have feathers... usually. If this one did, it would've flown away, not wandered into the forest. The bird probably wasn't with the creature they were looking for. He started to nose about elsewhere.

The pair was wise to search for more clues.

Clawmarks... but not quite like what a normal kom'giet would make. Strands of coarse black fur, the same black as the feathers. And, creepiest of all...

User Image

This is no mere clump of fur. This is a genuine chunk of skin, ripped from some poor kom'giet's back and shredded through sharp claws. This is a major wound, but the lack of an actual body in the area... what could have done this? The swamp gives them their answer. Two glowing spots in the distance, spots that could easily be eyes, start to come closer, and an eerie roar is heard, somewhere between a scream and a death knell. They waste no time in dashing back to the clearing, where... for some weird reason, Irrlicht is standing, with a damaged Akua. What happened here?

Reverie Rose
He nodded to the other two as they chose to follow the blood. He was curious, but at least splitting up meant that if the missing 'giet was in the other direction, someone would have found him. So following the two females, they went in the direction of the staggering footprints. He noticed the fur....to him it looked like a 'giet's fur possibly...bloody. "I hope it's not his blood." he said. Though it could be a mixture. He stopped when the odd female tripped, moving over to help her up. And underground cave him? "I see....well...if you hadn't mentioned it I probably wouldn't have known." he said as he looked into the darkness. "A hole like that at first might not register as a cave. So...I am going to guess he's over there. If you are hurt and seeking refuge, that would come to mind first. Holes can hold nasty things, and a drop wouldn't do his leg any good." he said, looking at the cave across the water. Though the thought of getting wet wasn't a fun one. "I choose to swim across to the cave." he said as he headed towards the water.
Evelyn Hayden
Samhain glanced at the water for a moment. When she had fallen out of that tree not too long ago, she was only sore and couldn't imagine trying to swim then. It was hard work. And once your fur got wet, it got heavier. No, she couldn't imagine someone with a broken leg swimming across that dark water. She turned to the stranger, "I think we should search the sinkhole. It might be treacherous but I honestly don't think that someone with a broken leg would be able to swim across that water. Plus, if they did get caught in the sinkhole, I can't imagine that they could get out very easily with a broken leg."

Irrlicht nods and drops her torch at Samhain's feet, leaving her with two. "Take my torch, and see how far you can get. We will scout for further footprints on the other side, and if we find any, we'll come back across and get you; if not, we will come back across and explore the cave with you. Good luck." With that, she nods to the male and follows him into the water.

As the two begin to swim, the dark female enters the cave. After the initial drop, the cave's slope is fairly shallow, and the hallways are wide. This is a typical long limestone cave, and, thanks to her torches, the light is good.

This is not necessarily a good thing. Obviously, some swamp monster lives down here. There are bones everywhere and bloodstains on the muddy ground. Deeper and deeper, Samhain traverses into the earth, until she reaches a large chamber with three forked paths... Pained moans emanate quietly from one of them, but the echo makes it impossible to tell which is which... and there are footsteps behind her...

Meanwhile, all goes well for the swimmers... until about halfway across the pond, when suddenly, with no warning, something slimy grapples the pair around their midsections. "Groo!" Irrlicht barely has time to shout out before they are dragged under the water. While both fight for their lives, Irrlicht, living in the swamps all her life, frees herself first and somehow manages to get the massive tentacles unwrapped from the spotted male. He is barely conscious, his sides bruised from the attack, but Irrlicht drags him to shore and prods him until he wakes with spluttering coughs. "I hate to say this... but if he swam across, he's dead now. Gods, I would never have believed that to be in there... everybody thought that the Groo went extinct decades ago. I guess this one managed to hang on... after all, it was awfully small for a Groo..." Shaking her head, the Di'Taki stares down at the spotted male's body. "You're in no shape to continue. Come on, lean on me and I'll walk you back to the clearing. It's safe there, and you can stay until we know for sure what happened to your missing kinsman. And then I can help you out of the swamps. C'mon." With a grunt, she heaves the injured male to his feet and leads him back to the clearing, where she discovers the other two 'giets. As she finds a soft place to lay the injured male, she speaks to them. "I take it you had no luck finding him either. Come, I think we might have found his hiding place. While we walk, tell me what you've seen." As the three of them head back to the cave, she shakes her head, surprised. "There... there are rumors that might match up with what you heard and have seen. But they're just... just stories. However... we best get down there quickly. She leads the two quickly back to the cave, where they dash down the hallway n the dark, occasionally bumping into the walls and tripping over bones. A spot of light ahead tells them that Samhain is ok, and, out of breath, the trio catches up to her. Irrlicht surveys the scene. They all hear the moans, and they all know that whoever is making them is in trouble.

"It seems that once again, there's choices. Which path will you go down?"
For everybody but Akua:
A: The right hand path.
B: The middle path.
C: The left hand path.

For Akua:
Your injuries are too great to allow you to continue. However, your valor will NOT be forgotten, and neither will your health. Irrlicht has left for you many sweets to take away some of the pain!

As always, responses due by 11 PM EST tomorrow!

When doing a maze, Kio had always learned to follow along one side; even if that path didn't take you where you wanted to go, you'd be able to turn around and continue until you found the correct path. He pressed his shoulder against the left wall and began to follow that path.
Evelyn Hayden
Samhain looked at the three entrances. There were no clues, just the moaning. She sat and listened. She could not tell for sure, but she thought maybe it was coming from the left one? She sniffed around the entrances for further clues, coming up with no other answers. She turned to the dark one who had lead them through the swamps and said, "I think it sounds like the moaning is coming from the left cave, but I can't be sure. I think we should explore that one."
Teigra
Having related all that she'd seen to Irrlicht, Sheelah allowed herself a moment to try and recover from the adrenaline rush that had forced her to flee to the clearing in the first place. The cave was hardly the relaxing atmosphere she could have hoped for, however, at least there was no glowy-eyed beast here sending shivers down her spine.
The weak moans echoing around the cavern walls, Sheelah closed her eyes to focus all her attention on her hearing and sense of smell. Which way, which way? The blood smears were confusing her nose, and the deceptive nature of the echoes were leaving the 'Giet with no more information to go on than she already had. Which was very little.
Well, when logic fails...make a choice and trust to instinct. "I'll take the right path," she nodded, taking a few steps in that direction.

"Sounds fair. I'll head down the center path." Irrlicht goes down the center path, only to discover a large chamber with blood on the walls and black feathers everywhere. The skeletal remains of some giant, ancient bird decorate the room, with eyeless skulls staring out at her from every direction. Horrified, she realizes that this is the den of the legendary beast that she'd always been told about, but had never really believed existed. She cries loudly for all to return to the center chamber, where she immediately dashes. The gloomy light of the fungus has told her all she needs to know. If that 'giet isn't down here, they can forget about ever finding him. Better one dead kom'giet than four dead kom'giet and one dead Di'Taki.

Together, the pair who went down the left path follow a twisting, turning hallway that ends in a room with a pile of old bloodstained bones and several dried carcasses; a pantry of some sort. When they hear Irrlicht's shrill cry, they race out back into the main cavern.

Sheelah, however, takes her time when she hears the call, for, hiding i the gloom of the right hand corridor's ending chamber...

User Image

He's grievously injured, with a broken leg and many deep cuts, and he's barely conscious, but this is obviously the missing male. Using all her strength, Sheelah manages to hoist him to his feet and carry him out into the main cavern. A twisted smile wracks Irrlicht's face; it is obvious that the Di'Taki is unfamiliar with the sense of relief. As a group, they hoist the missing 'giet out of the sinkhole and get him back to the clearing, where Akua waits, still feeling a bit hurt. Irrlicht leads them out of the swamps, back onto safe ground. "My work in there is not yet done, but you all acted with great valor. I thank you, and when he is able to talk, I know he will, too." She turns to Sheelah. "You I charge with his care. You, after all, found him. I will be very disappointed if he dies from his wounds." Was that a hint of humor in her voice? Nobody could tell, really. "I hope that if we meet again, it will not be under these dire circumstances." And with that, she extinguishes her torch, killing the fungus as swiftly as she gave it life, and disappears into the swamps.

And that's all! Thanks for playing, everybody! And never fear; for those who did not win, there are still more opportunities to win a 'giet!

Sheelah blinked a few times at the comment from Irrlicht...but quickly turned her attention back to the male 'Giet whose weight rested mostly on her frame at the moment. The injured male certainly wasn't lacking in bulk, which might explain how he managed to survive a run-in with...whatever that hellish beast was, if that was what happened. Still, the half-blind female wasn't sure how much further she'd be able to carry him at this rate. "Come on," she muttered, squaring her shoulders and urging the male along with a nudge. "Not much further now, there's a good place to rest..."

The male groaned again, a mixture of pain and exhaustion. He wanted to rest...so much pain...so tired. Yet, the warm, brown thing kept urging him to keep moving. He didn't want to move. Not anymore. Just sleep.

Still, the brown thing wasn't as bad as the horrid, black thing with wings. And that scream...it must have been a sound born only from nightmares and fears. If the warm thing wanted him away from that place, he wasn't going to argue. Much.

Having nodded a brief farewell to the other 'Giet, Sheelah assumed they'd understand she had other matters to deal with at the moment. Like her new charge. "Okay, here we go...a nice bed of clean leaves. Time to rest and let me take care of those injuries." She'd give it a shot anyway. She wasn't exactly a healer, but...she knew a few things from experience. "You have a name, stranger?" She didn't want to push too much, but she did want to check and make sure he was still at least somewhat there with her still.

With relief, the male sank slowly into the leaves, so as not to injure himself further. It was far from the most comfortable bedding in the world...but it felt like it right now. He shifted his leg with a groan, looking up at his 'rescuer.' He blinked at the female, his orange-gold eyes hazy with pain and exertion. He was still conscious, but only just. "...Lokni," he muttered tiredly, letting his head drop onto one paw. He was still awake, but taking what rest he could as blissful.

Sheelah noted the muttered name, nodding briefly and returning a warm smile. "I'm Sheelah. Now, you just rest, Lokni, I'll take care of things."
