Australia recently began the early stages of a campaign to reduce gambling. Some facts the news threw at me were confronting. 170,000 Australians (out of 21 Million) are addicted to some degree, to gambling.
That's 170,000 people who, during a revolution would feel that their habit, for better or worse, which they love so much, is threatened. So doesn't that guarantee 170,000 opponents to the revolution that are not necessarily of the perceived 'bourgeoisie'.
But that's not the focus of this thread, although it's there for discussion.
How do you navigate Gambling? So you've established your communist society, you're into transition mode or whatever, and across your desk comes the issue of gambling. A ridiculously popular, addictive and highly controversial habit. It's based in monetary exchange, and bourgeois traders capitalising off of all classes misfortunes. I suppose you could say, it has to go, or be severely reformed.
What do you do? How do you reconcile a total ban on gambling or, strong restrictions with your people? And furthermore, how do you deal with black market gambling?
I spoke about this on Skype with Kotka, and she had interesting positions. My theory was to allow the exchange of strong foreign currencies, which could allow decent travelling opportunities for your citizenry, as well as maintain gambling tourists from overseas.
Remember, Horse racing industries, and tonnes of jobs, including those which simply cannot be replaced by machines rest on gambling, and are on the line with your policy decisions. Jockeys, gamblers, tab clerks, horse farmers. Countless people are waiting for your policy decisions.

I would not impose a ban on Gambling, just Gambling for money. After all the driving force behind this practice is the illusion of getting rich quick. And it hurts more people than it benefits. If they want to bet for hours at the factory or something else, fine.
Better yet, The State could even offer certain things to the comrade if he wins. Like a stay at a Workers Resort to rest if hes a laborer, or lessons for sculpting or other arts & music. Let them win something that will make them able to perform Socially beneficial works. Or even tours of State Buildings, let them sit in on Party Congressional sessions. Let them see Communism in action and working. That couldn't hurt.
But certainly no betting food, clothing, housing(well they couldn't bet housing anyways but back to my point).
You could use this Addiction and job generator to do good in peoples lives.

Mm, that's interesting. So you want various luxuries to be available to a successful gambler?
It's a nice idea, imo, but is it workable? I mean, what do they wager and lose, and if they lose nothing, isn't an essential lottery of free benefits with no risk? It could seek to increase the amount of gambling quite a bit in that case.

If you don't provide these "Luxuries" then whats the point Comrade? And they yes it would be like a lottery. One in maybe a million or so workers winning. My goal was also to make it less appealing in order to reform the industry into something more compatible with Marxism... if that possible.

That may well work. Depends on how accepting the public are. If they are not, I only worry about the black market potential gambling has.

I suppose you mean you want to ban gambling outright? That's fine, what will you do about black markets, which will definitely arise, following from history with prohibition of addictive things?
Allowing foreign currency betting wasn't an attempt to 'subvert the currency' it was a theory based around the possibility of reconciling gambling problems with absence of working currency. As for killing it, the hypothetical doesn't ask about how you bring communism down, just how you cope with rampant gambling.
I don't actually support gambling. I just am unsure what to do about it, in Communist or Capitalist society, frankly.

Maybe not phase it completely out, its a useful way to keep the workers working. Its a very sticky area. No matter what the state does, gambling will always continue to be a hassle for ages. All it can do is try to fight it, and discourage its practice via the education of our young people. And if Communism is achieved, then we wouldn't have to worry about it anyways.

I do not get what could be used for gambling in a communist society. You have no private property, you could only trade clothes and the like, or food ration slips. This is something that I would completely ignore, as it is a cancer, following society for time immemorial. As long as there are things to trade, there are things to bet on. And as long as there are things to bet on and people to bet on them then there will be gambling.
Rather than oppress it, ignoring it as if it doesn't exist and breaking it up when it distracts work/societal focus is what I would consider ideal. Does this gambling thing extend to game shows and the like, as well? I would assume communism would take the place of the "get wealthy quick" game shows and replace them with popular Japanese game shows like "guess this word/emotion for the lolz" or "degrade yourself in this obstacle course of messiness for the luls and a delicious seafood all you can eat meal"

It would be replaced by a good version of youtube.
