Jerard Phonne
Captain

PostPosted: Sat Oct 17, 2009 12:28 am

The frequent clacking of keys could be heard as Jerard finished slotting in the second pair of the day into his timetable, and surveyed the two girls over the rim of his glasses. A glance at the corner of his laptop screen revealed that it was 3.04PM; Hanzel would still be sleeping. He frowned slightly. The administrator didn't usually like to schedule important things on the same day – it ruined his sense of organisation – and stretching his staff thinly didn't sit well with him either. Unfortunately, the admissions department was rather overwrought, and there was no helping it.

His expression cleared, and he was careful to smile warmly, lest the students think his ire was directed towards them. Their sense of style clashed quite obviously in their attire, but Jerard wasn't unduly concerned. He'd never seen souls match up incorrectly in all his years at SHIBUSEN, and appearances were deceiving.

"Miss Gil and Miss Denton, welcome to life at SHIBUSEN as a partnered pair. I've arranged for Hanzel to take you around campus. He'll be able to answer any questions you have." He paused, wondering if he should warn them in advance about the Death Scythe's likely state, but decided against it. "Please wait outside."

"Thank you for your help, sir," April smiled graciously at the administrator, "I'm sure that he will be able to help us."

"Thanks," Eva's departure was a lot shorter, and a lot less polite. She just shot him a grin and opened the door to let herself out. She gestured for April to follow, and she did after giving Jerard a curtsy.

As the two of them walked to their destination, Eva looked over at April.

"So, what can you tell me about Hanzel?" asked the blonde.

"In the circle of supernatural activities, he's called the 'Grim Sleeper'. He's a Death Scythe... when he's awake. That's all I really know," April shrugged as she dug through her small, violet handbag. She pulled out a ribbon and tied it around the small hat on her head.

"Meeting a Death Scythe... I'm a little nervous," April admitted.

He was late. Not horribly so, but Hanzel tripped down the hallway as if his Ma had appeared behind him with her eyebrows drawn in heavy disapproval, still clutching his pager in one hand. He looked even more rumpled than he had in the morning, eyes glassy, new crinkles in his shirt from being slept on. Another introductory tour?

The taser scrubbed his face viciously, bewildered. Maybe he'd dreamed Rayne and Dario...? But no, that wasn't right; Jerard's message had been business as usual, but there was a vaguely apologetic tone about it all. Hanzel was useless without his 2 o'clock nap and the administrator knew better than anybody, so it must be really urgent.

He spied the kids from a distance, although at this point they only registered as colourful blurs. "Hey," his tired smile split into a yawn and he tucked the pager as well as his his hands firmly inside his pockets. "Ah, sorry. About being late too. I'm Hanzel. Jerard probably told me about you? I mean, told you about me." He broke off, blinking. The taser was really in trouble if he couldn't keep track of his mouth, but if he stopped talking he might start sleeping.

"So, um, anywhere you wanna go first?"

Eva jutted her chin out towards Hanzel.

"Grim Sleeper... I see what you're talking about, April," she gave him a once over before turning back to the lace-wearing pistol, "But I don't see why you have to be nervous. He looks like your average college student: always tired."

She laughed at her own joke, and April blushed.

"You should be more polite to those that rank above you!" she whispered through clenched teeth before looking at Hanzel.

"I'm so sorry about Eva, she's pretty new to all things supernatural, and I don't think she quite understands all that you had to go through to become a Death Scythe," she spoke quickly, giving little curtsies after practically every other syllable.

"Why don't you shine his shoes while you're at it?" Eva mumbled to herself before speaking out loud: "All right, Hanzel. I don't really care where you show us first, so let's start with the closest place, okay?"

Hanzel was still floating in a haze but he winced at the mention of his old nickname. Did even the newbies know about his habits these days? Way to ruin his aspirations of being the cool older bro. He forgot about his charge momentarily as he slid a hand back out of his jeans to thumb his cheek in embarrassment, a tendril of electricity licking his face as he tried to focus. Oddly, he'd never shocked himself. Maybe his wavelength knew its owner or he was immune. But... What was he saying again?

The taser stared at the two girls as if by doing so he could make them more real. His brain felt like it was wrapped in ten layers of cotton candy. Eva and April. Right. He could remember that. "Aha... Well, it looks like you guys are pretty informed already." He wasn't offended, though his tone was vaguely self-deprecatory, and he grinned as Eva (April?) tried to cover for her partner. It brought back memories of his ex (ex-TECH, that was) - Hanzel's mouth had the tendency to run away from him when he was exhausted, which...

Well.

"It's okay," he shrugged even as his eyelids drooped, bemused and not really seeing the curtsies. He was proud that he'd made Death Scythe of course, mostly cause his ma had glowed, but he didn't see it as a big thing to lord over other people. He was still Hanzel, and sure, it was convenient to be able to fight on his own, but mostly he missed being dragged places and having someone to lean on. Anyway.

He shook his head vigorously. These two had a good vibe. If they worked hard and pulled each other along, they'd make it. "Sure. Looks like you're fast learners anyway," he said lightly and started to the slow scuffle towards the Missions Department. Tried and true formula, right? "This way's the Mission board." He wanted to say more, but at the moment, 'under the weather' was an understatement. Hopefully April (Eva?) - the girl in the pretty dress - would fill the silence.
